swimming and dining

I love swimming and I love that my kids have all taken a liking to it as well.  Today was a HOT HOT day for us {in the 90’s … I know all you Texas gals are laughing} so we met up with my sisters and their kids at the pool.

Such cute boys being their silly selves.

And little miss was enjoying the shade with her auntie.

On a totally different note, thanks for all the fun comments on the dining room. In answer to a couple of questions:

1. The window does slide past that post.

move

2. The wall color is Benjamin Moore Berkshire Beige {a good lineny brownish taupe color}

3. The drapes are my favorite linen ones from IKEA. I used the material from these for the bumper & artwork in the nursery.  They are the greatest unbleached linen and come super long which fit our tall windows perfectly.

4. This is not what the dining room EVER looks like unless we are having a party.  Usually the table is either empty or has a couple of random things that get dropped {library books, mail, spare legos}.  I also use the table for sewing since it is so big and typically empty.  I struggle with what to do with a dining room table when not in use. Any suggestions? Are you a ‘set the table’ type or a ‘leave it empty’? Or maybe you use a centerpiece? If so, what do you use?

5. The chairs on the right hand side are old theater seats taken from a local high school auditorium during a renovation.  They move from room to room and really serve no purpose, but they are one of those things that are fun and unique and we couldn’t resist.

cousins

I love that my sisters and I all have kids about the same age. There are eight all together with my number one being the first {which means there are eight aged six and under}.  Add in my cousin’s two little ones and it makes for a very crazy family get-togethers!

This morning the two two-year-olds spent some quality time bonding over a bin full of sand.

They are good little buddies.

I can’t wait to see what they are like years from now.

graduation

I’m having a hard time believing that my baby is graduating from kindergarten today.  The fact that he is going to be in first grade is just too strange to consider for this emotional mommy.

My sweet boy is such a good kid.  He is respectful and thoughtful, a good listener and direction follower, which makes for a really good student. He started kindergarten being a pre-reader and is now a full-blown reader.  He started the year wanting me to walk him in to school each day and now he prefers to ride the bus.  He can count by twos and tell a joke and says the most big-kid things like “I’m 100 percent sure” and “speaking of …”.  Where did the time go?

The other day he said to me, “mommy, I think I’m ready to call you mom. Ozzie calls his mom ‘mom’ and so do Mason & Marshall. So, I think I should too. What do you think, Mom?”

And then, we just looked at each other and busted out in laughter.

“Nah”, he said, “I’ll just stick with mommy”.

It just didn’t feel right. I’m still his mommy. And he is certainly still my baby.

Even if he is a first-grader.

It’s a sunny day

My mom taught a song to the boys:

“It’s a sunny day, it’s a sunny day, it’s sunny outside so we can go out a play. All the little children say ‘hip-hip-hooray!’ It’s a sunny, sunny day {boom boom}”

Most days when it is unexpectedly sunny {quite frequently, I’m afraid}, we all break out in song. Today was one of those day.

GORGEOUS.

So we headed outdoors.

I realized that since having our little girl, I really haven’t photographed my first three loves. So I grabbed the camera and snapped a few shots of our beautiful day.

We met up with my mom and her wonderful husband for a lakeside lunch.

Then ventured to another park to meet up with cousins. {Note: it was only 68, which is really a nice spring day, but certainly not warm enough to be shirtless – unless you are 5 and you really don’t care}.

My silly six year old found posing for the camera quite entertaining. He had some awesome poses.

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend. We loved today.

Unfortunately, I think we’ll be singing the “It’s a rainy day” version of the song tomorrow.

a winner & a birthday boy

First of all, thank you to all the kind ladies who commented about my beautiful shower.  The invitations were created by my dear friend Rae … aren’t they the most perfect things you’ve ever seen? Keepsake for sure. And it was hosted at my best friend’s gorgeous home and all the food was made by my talented girls.

Now, for the winner of the fancy shoe stationery {I went with a very high-tech form of drawing, as you can see}.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Six years ago, right about now, I was laying in my bed starting to cry from the pain of contractions. It was my first time at this labor thing and I had already been sent home from the hospital early that morning, so there was no way I was going to go in only to be sent home again. When you’ve never experienced labor pains, you really have no idea how bad they can get. I figured “it could be worse”, so I stayed in bed, curled up, fighting through the pain while my husband finished out his day at work.  Another hour or so passed and my mother-in-law {a former labor & delivery nurse} came by to see how we were doing.  I mentioned it felt a little like I needed to push and she FREAKED OUT. We raced to the hospital, where I was admitted and realized that I had dilated all the way to 8 cm.  Is this too much information?  I haven’t thought about this in a while!

Anyway, two hours later, my little bundle of everything was born.  My m-i-l jokes that the first thing I said when I saw him was, “He’s so cute. Not all gross like i thought!”.  And he really was. Still is.

He was born just two hours before his daddy’s birthday..

Oh how this little boy has changed our lives. He is sensitive and silly and so completely smart. He is cautious and curious and creative beyond belief. Give him a pencil and paper and he’ll create a masterpiece. Give him a box of legos and he’ll build the most amazing helicopter.

He has his share of quirks: he creates more crumbs than anyone I’ve known. He waits until the very last second to go to the bathroom.  He gets freaked out about minor injuries. He cries a little more than we’d prefer.

But he loves the Lord, loves his family, loves his terribly worn ‘white blankie’.

And we all adore him.

Happy birthday to the most wonderful S.I.X. year old around.
