the spot that represents my style

I have a favorite spot in our house.

the spot

While our kitchen, Audrey’s nursery and my office are really wonderful spaces, for some reason this little hallway just makes me happy.

layout

It lies between our living room and the front parts of the house and is the half wall of the stairway. If we would have purchased our home just a few weeks earlier in the building process, I would have asked for an open rail staircase. But the walls were already framed and dry walled and the builder wanted something like $3000 to tear them out and add a railing – as you can see, we opted to keep the wall as it was.

table

One of the very first things I did to ‘customize’ our house when we moved in was add the book pages to the wall.

I just tore the pages out of an old book then used my tape gun with double stick tape to adhere them to the wall.  They’ve been up for nearly five years and still look great … other than the spot nearest the edge of the wall where an unnamed baby who lives in our house takes great delight in pulling the paper off the walls.

I like to change out what is on the table – but a tray to hold my keys and other random things is a must. Most often an assortment of hair clips, ponytail holders and stray bobby pins can be found there {do you wear bobby pins? If so, do you find them all over your house? Not sure why I take them out so often and leave them in random places …}. My Stella & Dot flower ring usually lives on the tray too. It is just too pretty to hide away.

Lately I’ve been in to collecting things with the number six on them {because I have six people in my family}.  I really love anything with a graphic number or letter on it.

art-print

I popped a new art print in an old frame without glass and love the hint of color it adds.

bibles

Other favorite collectables are old books and {particularly} bibles.

I posted the space last summer {you can see how it was decorated for the summertime here} and at the end of the post asked this:

Do you have a favorite spot in your home that best represents your design style?

I think it’s a pretty fun question.

This spot is a good representation of things I love – old books, vintage silver, fresh greens, natural baskets, a slightly modern table with feminine and meaningful accessories. I have no idea what to call my style, but it is represented pretty well with this little spot.  I think that is why it is my favorite.

So how about you? Do you have a place in your home that best displays your style? Do share!

I need a little color

One of the great benefits of having Holly visit our house was her using her decorating genius to give me ideas for how to finish {or start!} most of the rooms in my house.

ashley meaders

One thing she noticed was that we have very little color. No surprise there as I do love my neutrals.

As I thought about it, though, I realized that most of the rooms I am inspired by in magazines or on blogs are not void of color.  They are not usually packed full of color either – I’m just not quite bold enough – but they do have some elements of pattern or hue other than taupe.  I’ve realized that most rooms I love start with neutral bases {sofa, tables, bed} and then layer on textures and a touch of color.  I’ve done a pretty good job composing the bases in our house, but now it is time to layer. And add color.

So this weekend, I’m working on painting a wall Marine Magic {this wonderful deep blue-green-gray}, I have some bold paper to wallpaper a wall and I may even attempt to have my kids paint a huge canvas {although that one is a bit scary as what they inevitably end up doing is mixing all of the paint together and then the beautiful painting becomes a blob of army green}.

Wish me luck.

Color scares me, but I’m pretty sure it will add some cheer to our otherwise neutral home.

our guest room {aka holly’s room}

In preparing for Holly to visit, I knew I needed to give her a special place to sleep.  I have to admit, I was a little intimidated creating a guest room for a lady who has such design talent. I mean, how could I possibly come up with something as beautifully decorated as her desk:

Or these rooms she has designed?

Our little guest room is just a teensy room off the playroom. It was originally built as an office for me, then used as a bedroom for my best friend’s daughter when they lived with us.

girl room

When they moved into their new home, we brought my office back in until we moved it {again!}downstairs and the room became the guestroom.  All of our family live nearby so, truth be told, we don’t have many visitors. Which means our guestroom {pre-holly} was just a big unmade bed used mostly as a trampoline for the boys.

In true Emily fashion, I waited until two days before her arrival to put it together. I ran around like a crazy woman borrowing pieces from other rooms and digging through closets trying to gather things to make the room look like it was put together with purpose.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with how it all came together.

With a queen bed, there is only just enough room for a little side table and a pathway to the bed. But I love the way it is all framed by the curtain panels – they make it feel cozy.

The wall behind the bed is covered in book pages {my fave} and the old paned window hangs from a wire to give a little more cottage charm.

I wasn’t sure what to do with this large expanse of wall, but when I found these sticks in a closet, I decided to treat them like driftwood and hang them. Sort of quirky, kind of haphazard, but I like it.

The bedding was a mix of Amy Butler sheets {a very exciting find at Marshalls}, a white quilted coverlet and shams {from Target years ago}, a white duvet with blue stripe {hand-me-down from Rae} and a random assortment of pillows made in chipper fabric from Premier Prints, Amy Butler Nigella in olive/primrose, a polka dot tea towel turned pillow and that sweet little dotted one from Marshalls.

The curtains are actually shower curtains from Target, with a thick band of black and white ticking to extend them to the floor.  I covered a drum shade with a tea towel and hung it using a plug-in pendant light bulb socket {I have no idea what it is called or where it came from, but it sure worked out well as a bedside light!}

A few little goodies for the guest.

The best part of all was that Holly loved it and felt comfortable as our guest for one of the most refreshing, inspiring, healing, productive, chilly {!} weekends I’ve had in a long time.

I can assure you that miss Holly Mathis is just as delightful, real, sweet and completely talented as she seems on her blog.  I really am thankful for this girl. And her accent. Y’all.

office–rearranged

Several months ago, this was my finished office:

office 1

But in true ryan-and-emily-fashion the room didn’t stay that way for long.  Because Ryan was working with me so much on my blog and business, we decided he needed a workspace in the office as well.  So we moved a few things around, changed out art on the walls and here is where we now work:

office

I’ve always loved the idea of two desks back to back and it is very functional for us. Ryan and I spend a lot of time at our computers and it is nice to be face to face while we work.

I added some of my favorite pictures and artwork to the wall in a semi-organized but mostly haphazard manner.

A sample of my favorite wallpaper, bird poster, photos of my darling boys, botanicals from my mom, silhouettes of the kids, a family photo, my lamp print, linen bulletin board and wall hanging card holders. Everything on this wall has special meaning to me and I loved putting it together.

On the other side of the room is the chalkboard wall and an armoire that we brought in from another room in the house. It now houses all of my decorative paper and envelopes.

twirl

A while back I decoupaged sheet music to a funky Goodwill painting. My three-year-old and I watercolored over top to ‘age’ the paper, then I painted my favorite word on top.

And that is our rearranged office for two.

{If you are interested in details from the office, read THIS post and THIS one too.  If you want to learn more about the painted wallpaper, read THIS one.}

FYI: the desks were a gift from a family friend who no longer needed them. I don’t see any markings from the manufacturer, so I can’t give a name to them. So sorry for the lack of information!

The wall hanging card holder things are from Pottery Barn about three years ago. They no long carry them and I couldn’t find them online. I know, I’m really helpful.
