lots of stuff to share {of very little significance}

Time for a random chat session. In case you have missed our last coffee dates, you can catch up here and here.  And this is another pretty random post. And this one too. {I see a theme …}

So here’s what I have to share today:

We’ll start with the biggest news in our household. Our No. 1 lost his first tooth.

tooth

Keep in mind that he is 7 1/2 and in second grade. Probably the only second grader who had not lost a tooth until yesterday. Bless this late bloomer’s heart.  The tooth fairy left him $5. I remember getting a quarter when I lost my tooth … my, how times have changed.

My cousin got married this weekend and it was beautiful. I can’t wait to share the photos.

fall flowers

She sent us home with flowers from the reception. I am enjoying the fall color they add to the living room.

Plus they have a really great logo.

Did you notice how tan I am in the photo?

clip_image002

That’s because I decided to try spray tanning. The last time I did it was for my wedding and I had drip marks down my back. Awesome.  I heard that the technology has changed since then so I figured it was worth a shot.

Let’s just say that it might have been overkill.

When I picked up the boys from the bus that afternoon, all of their friends stared at me and asked why I was so tan.  You know it doesn’t look natural when little boys start making fun of you.  Doubly awesome.

Have you seen these new ingenious inventions?

Baby food in a pouch. No spoon needed.  Whoever came up with this is one smart cookie.

My little ones like to do this:

It makes a mess, but keeps them busy for hours. Or maybe more like minutes, but those minutes are precious.

P.S. Mason prefers to not wear a shirt. Even when it is freezing out. He is crazy.

I’m pretty sensitive to smells and generally scented candles give me headaches {walking into a candle store is like torture to me}, but I found this one and actually enjoy it.

tocca

It is the Florence scent by Tocca.

I pinned this rick rack rosette on my things to make pinterest board and decided to make one for Audrey.  Then I clumped in another flower, a loop of velvet ribbon and a couple of feathers. Love how it turned out.

Speaking of ribbon, I found this cute scalloped ribbon at my paper store last week. Also love.

They have lots of other cute styles too.

Anything else? Hmm …

I went to costco yesterday and I really appreciate how big their parking lots are.  I don’t, however, appreciate how much money I spend there.

I think these prints are really lovely.

Have you seen this video? Cutest thing ever.

My friend Nina has helped turn the video into a book that I can’t wait to add to Audrey’s library.

You can order one here, or like the kiki & coco facebook page to be entered to win a copy.

And that about wraps it up.

Thanks for listening to my rambling thoughts.

the pumpkin patch

Last week we went on a field trip with No. 3’s preschool class to the local pumpkin patch.

Mason is in a class with two of his best buddies {who happen to have mommies who are two of my best buddies, with older siblings who are some of Brady’s best buddies} so we all went along to join in on the fun.

We went on a hayride …

We played in the corn room …

{what kid wouldn’t like jumping into a huge room full of dried corn kernels?!}

We took a ride on a cattle train …

Walked through the corn maze …

Did a little bit of learning …

{did you know that for every silk tassel on an ear of corn, there is a kernel inside receiving it’s nutrients from it? Fascinating stuff can be learned at the farm on a preschool field trip.}

And, of course, we chose some pumpkins …

I really wish a photo would be able to capture the beauty of Mt. Rainier on a sunny day. It is pretty spectacular.

Which got me thinking … I had just returned from Florida where I was pretty impressed with the climate, the sandy beaches, the southern hospitality.  So impressed, I started questioning why we live where we do.

And yet, there I stood surrounded by beauty of a different kind. The air was crisp, the leaves were turning, the ground was muddy and the mountain was out.  It made me realize for a moment that I really do love Washington state. It may rain a lot {did you notice my new rain boots? My first pair since I was a kid … it was about time!}, it may not have the most ideal climate, but it sure is beautiful in it’s own evergreen kind of way.

So lesson learned. I will appreciate where I live and enjoy the beautiful autumn season we enjoy here.

And I’ll probably drink a few pumpkin spice lattes while I’m at it.

it’s official …

eggnog

… the holiday season has arrived.

I’ve found in my limited research that people are either lovers or haters of egg nog.

Me?  I’m a lover.  I like mine cut with a little nonfat milk. Makes me think it is somehow good for me – you know, the whole ‘milk, it does a body good’ thing.

You?

why

Why aren’t there seat belts on school buses?

Print

Why is it that no matter how late a three year old stays up, he still wakes at the exact same time in the morning?

Print

Why does gas cost so much? Or maybe more importantly, why do I drive a car that requires so much gas?

Print

Why, if there is a 50/50 chance of getting it right, does my baby girl put her shoes on the wrong feet 100% of the time?

Print

Why is the English language so complicated to spell? It is rather confusing to explain to a kindergartner that love is spelled l-o-v-e and not l-u-v, even though luv makes way more sense.

Print

Why didn’t my hydrangeas bloom this year?

Print

Why is it so easy to take your loved ones for granted? Ryan witnessed a tragedy this weekend and it has put a few things in perspective for us. I just wish it didn’t take sadness to make us realize it is the people and not the things that we really value.

a childhood dream

Several months ago I read a blog post written by a woman who had just received news that her house was going to be in a magazine. The post was full of excitement and humility and touched on the point that God is so cool that he knows our deepest dreams even better than we do.

Let me be totally honest with you … when I read it, I didn’t react as I wish I had.

I wish I would have thought, “Wow, that is so awesome for her!”.  Instead that ugly, childish voice crept in and said, “What about me? What about my deepest dreams? Don’t you see me, God?”

I went to bed feeling discouraged and woke up completely convicted. How terribly selfish I am.  I have plenty to be thankful for, plenty of ways that God has been gracious to me and plenty of opportunities to show for it. So I sent a congratulations note to the woman, repented of my ugly ways and went on with my day.

A few hours later, after maneuvering a cart that was easily double my weight through the slippery and crowded aisles of Costco, I was loading my car and got a call from Ryan.

ryan: “Did you check your email?”

me: “Um, no. I did get 12 billion rolls of toilet paper though”

r: “well there is one here you need to read”.

me: “okay, what does it say?”

r: “it is from a woman at DaySpring. It says they are interested in your artwork”.

I started to cry. There in the middle of the Costco parking lot with a phone to my ear and three kids eating $1.50 hotdogs, I stood there crying.

I was crying not so much because of this new opportunity {although it was a cool one}, but because it hit me …

Since I was a little girl, I wanted to be an artist. It wasn’t something I put a ton of effort in to – I didn’t take special art classes or get a degree in art, but it was always something I loved doing.  My aunt owned a Hallmark store and my sisters and I would spend a portion of our Christmas break ‘working’ for her {which basically meant we would pass out balloons and eggnog fluffs to holiday shoppers}. I loved that Hallmark store. I loved looking at the gift wrap, the party supplies, the little trinkets and Christmas ornaments. But most of all, I loved looking at the greeting cards.

I would daydream about designing my own cards and what they would look like. I loved the playful styles of Mary Engelbreit, Susan Branch and Kathy Davis. I spent hours and hours looking, studying, collecting art from these designers in the form of greeting cards.

That afternoon in the parking lot, it came full circle. Somewhere between starting a ‘real’ job and starting a family, I had forgotten that dream of being an artist.

But in that moment, I realized I had become one.

A good enough one that a company like DaySpring {a division of Hallmark, go figure} would want to sell my artwork.

I was excited. I was humbled. I was so very thankful.

Thankful that even though I don’t always acknowledge or understand it, God does see me. He does know my dreams and heart desires. Sometimes even more than I do.

As proof of His faithfulness, I am pleased to announce that a few of my art prints are now available for purchase at DaySpring.

If you have been wanting a larger canvas of the bird, fruit, lamp or chair prints, you can now get them! They come either as framed prints {which are really nice}:

or as gallery-wrapped canvases {also great}:

They are even offering personalization if you want to add a family name to the print.
