Thank you, friends, for taking the 2013 reader survey I had up a few weeks ago. Our goal was to help us get a better idea for who you are, what you love about JDC and how we can make things better around here. Curious about the results? Here you go:

about-you-reader-survey-results online-habits-jdc-reader-survey you-and-jdc-reader-survey

There were a few questions where you could write in your answers and it was fun to read through your responses.

Many of you like my honesty and realness best which is such a flattering compliment and affirms that I’m doing okay sharing more than just pretty pictures and put-together moments.

Some appreciated the clean design and uncluttered feel of the blog, which again is affirming to my decision to keep my site advertisement-free.

Most of you want to see more tutorials, more of our home, more in-the-process rather than all-finished type posts. And a bit more about our everyday life.

I’m on it.

So I’m kinda curious: are you surprised at any of the stats? Do you have anything to add?

Well, I’m 67 years old and love reading your blog and getting your updates. Looked like there wasn’t anyone over 60 in your survey, though. Kind of disappointed me because your projects are for everyone. I love decorating ideas and all the things you post!

  2. Susan August 26, 2013 at 8:38 am #

Being over 60, I’m in the minority age brackent – that surprises me because I find your blog very informative and enjoyable and “easy.”
Observation #2 which surprises me, Pinterest is more popular than Facebook but I think I know why!
Thanks for sharing the results, even that was enjoyable and easy to understand – love the colors!

We were a little surprised at the age spread as well – although I do talk alot about things going on in my life so it makes sense that most readers are my age. I’m so glad to have you reading and always love comments from women who are older and wiser who can speak encouragement from a place of experience. Thanks so much for reading!

Thank you for posting the results. I have a small internet-based fabric store. I am a terrible blogger, but am more comfortable with facebook and instagram. Awesome to see that LOTS of people connect in those ways, too. I assume most of your readers would also be the demographic of my shoppers, so your hard work at putting together and compiling this info will help me, and others I am sure, with our businesses! Thank You!! Love your work, keep it up! This weekend my kids and I used your watercolor monogram tutorial…fun!

I have been inspired by you in more than one way and just started this project (my webpage) today!
How about a statistics of which country do most of your readers belong to. The statistics could be surprising!

PS: i used ur water painting techniques

Hi Emily ! I regret missing and participating in your survey but I want to chime in , late , if i may ? I would LOVE to know how you learned to create and /or edit your graphics . Im a self taught graphics girl in progress and better relate to a “real person ” vs written instructions on “how to ‘s ” If its not too much for you , any chance of a short lesson ? Thank you …. You are my first blog and I really appreciate it !! Best :) Deanna

      coming soon!

I think you hit the nail on the head and the ‘results’ were fun to read. I LOVE that your blog is advertisement free, it does wonders for my brain and eyes! I’ll be a reader for as long as you’re a writer :)

Hi Emily. Would love fashion post on your boys. Favorite looks, places to shop etc. Also do you cut their hair. As the mom of three boys I have tried and done okay But I have also goofed it up! I just think of the money I could save without the monthly barber shop trips. I need to commit to this. Also, your boys room is looking GREAT. Can’t wait to see the final reveal! Have a great day!

  8. Cailin August 26, 2013 at 9:53 am #

I can NOT believe that some people actually read more than one HUNDRED blogs ! :)

  9. Relyn August 26, 2013 at 9:55 am #

I was shocked at how few have an active blog of their own. I do that as a blogger, as well. I tend to think that my only readers are the ones who comment.

  10. Jamie August 26, 2013 at 10:20 am #

I LOVE the fact that you do not advertise. I have stopped reading many blogs because I feel that it is one big advertisement. Love your blog!

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 10:09 pm #

Thanks Jamie. Sometimes those ads get obnoxious. Same with sponsored posts. I’m missing out on a potentially large income by not including either of these forms of monetization, but I just can’t do it. I want my space to look just so and I want to have control over what I post about. Thanks for affirming my decision!

Disappointed to see that not more people were interested in graphic design. Are you still considering doing a class sometime?

Ahh, just saw Deanna’s comment! :)

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 10:07 pm #

YES! Lots of people mentioned wanting a class about graphic design and so I am doing my best to put together something great. More details coming later this fall :)

      • rachel August 27, 2013 at 5:20 pm #

Whoot, whoot! All smiles here! :)

And I was going to email you to thank you for something…
I signed up for a beginner Illustrator class at my local community college that started last week. Eep! On our first homework assignment, we were supposed to expand the dock (which I did) and we should have seen a particular window come up in our dock, however mine wasn’t showing! :( I stressed for a minute, then I remembered what you had shown us regarding how to see your Glyphs by selecting it under the Window tab.

So i tried it! And guess what… I was able to figure out how to open my missing window because of YOUR Glyph tutorial! I would have had no idea why it was missing otherwise! So thank you!!!

So glad you are working on something!! Can’t wait!! :)

I was shocked to see people that read 50-100 blogs! What?? There is life outside of the computer, people!

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 10:07 pm #

I probably have 50 that I read – not everyday, but when I have some downtime, I love popping around to see what others are doing.

  13. Susan Hand August 26, 2013 at 11:35 am #

I think the more interesting question … Was there anything in the results that surprised you or makes you think differently about your space?

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 10:06 pm #

Well thanks for thinking of me! I don’t think there is anything overly surprising. I write the blog as if I’m writing to myself or close friends so it makes sense that most readers are similar in age, relationship, stage of life as I am. I was a little surprised that the majority of readers have been here for 2 years – which is a long time and the loyalty is completely appreciated. It begins to feel like a friendship and I’m so glad for a space where that is happening.

  14. Lynn August 26, 2013 at 11:40 am #

Thanks for sharing the results of your survey. Enjoy your blog very much!!

  15. Jane August 26, 2013 at 12:51 pm #

I didn’t get to take the survey but have followed since you began. I fall in all your major catagories listed but wanted to encourage you that I personally love when you write about what God is showing and teaching you. I also like to know your a real person who I would want to be friends with. Keep using the gifts He has given you! Thanks for inspiring me.

  16. Jennifer August 26, 2013 at 12:53 pm #

I am with Deanna – I missed your survey (busy inbox), but love your results presentation! Can you give us a tutorial on how you put this presentation together? Did you use a program or make your graphs/bar charts, etc. in a spreadsheet? Nice job!

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 9:50 pm #

I used survey monkey to host the survey and was able to access the results with the graphs from there. I did a bit of editing and embellishing using both photoshop and illustrator, but did not actually create any of the graphs. It would be a great resource to learn about though!

Emily: I was also surprised that there were not more older people reading your blog. My body is old but not my heart and I look forward to your emails everyday. I used to love to decorate my house and did many homemade things. Still do some if my health permits. Also, I would like to speak to Alima. Some days I might look at over 50 blogs or spend the majority of the day on pinterest. I am 71 years old and in a wheel chair and looking at blogs and pinterest adds so much to my life. Reminds me of what I used to do, makes me think about what I might be able to do if I have a really good day, gives me ideas to share with my children and grandchildren, and they share their finds with me. Emily, your blog is very easy to read and very interesting. Love seeing your home. Thank you for taking the time to share your life.

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 9:48 pm #

Thank you for sharing! I just love the ways the internet/blogging/pinterest has opened up so many ways to share creative inspiration. So happy that you can enjoy your days being inspired by pretty things.

  18. Denise August 26, 2013 at 1:44 pm #

Thank you for sharing your results. Some things were about what I would have expected others a bit of a surprise. But lots of great stats to think about!

  19. Rosanne August 26, 2013 at 2:56 pm #

I was kind of surprised what an overwhelming majority are married….i’m a single 20-something preschool teacher who loves Jesus, kids, and decorating, so naturally I read blogs written by artistic Christian moms….I’m not sure what category I fit in, but i guess this must be the group i share the most common interests with! You Jesus-loving mommies out there really are my heroes! Your job is hard and there is none more important. Thanks again, Emily, for your inspiring posts!

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 9:47 pm #

      So happy to have you!

  20. Victoria August 26, 2013 at 3:25 pm #

It kind of surprised me how many of your readers have blogs!

  21. Jacquelyn August 26, 2013 at 5:22 pm #

Really impressive Emily. You should be so proud of yourself for reaching such a diverse group of (primarily) women. I hope you appreciate how much we adore you and admire you. I only read a handful of blogs – literally about 5 and I pass yours to many of my friends. I love the breadth of topics and your willingness to share your personal thoughts and experiences. Thank you! I hope your survey inspires you like you inspire your readers.

  22. Mel August 26, 2013 at 8:17 pm #

A fun survey and post, but overall it shows how much we love your blog Emily – please keep up the good work! I can’t remember if location was one of the questions, but it would have been interesting to see where all your readers are from. I am in the United Arab Emirates and it would be fun to see how far your readership stretches around the globe!

    • emily August 26, 2013 at 9:46 pm #

I have access to geographical location through google analytics. I’d be happy to share once I gather the info …

  23. Pam August 27, 2013 at 3:22 am #

Well, once again I find that I’m pretty much “smack-dab” in the middle! And I always have considered myself above adverage! Thanks for posting the results. I love your blog!

  24. Tami August 27, 2013 at 4:50 am #

I was surprised to find out I wasn’t 30-39. I was all like woo hoo… in the biggest category!! Then I was all like …. Oops. I’m 42. Bummer. Lol

  25. Jennifer August 31, 2013 at 12:40 pm #

I love the stats….it was interesting to see where I fit in. I am sorry I missed the original questionnaire but found the results fascinating. Thanks for sharing…I think you are real and fresh and like whatever you choose to post.
