y’all
I have a slight infatuation with southern accents. I wish I had one. I wish I could say y’all and darlin’ and cute things like that.
I’ve never actually been to the south {well, actually I have been to San Antonio, but I don’t recall a lot of y’alls on that trip} so I don’t know for certain that it’s even what y’all say. But Beth Moore talks that way and she’s from the south so that is my frame of reference. She also does cute things with her hands and she makes me want to have acrylic nails with a french manicure and know more about God. I think she’s amazing.
anyway …
What I really want to say is that y’all are the best.
You make blogging very fun for me with your sweet comments.
So thank you.
You’re real darlin’s.
One little way I can say thank you is through my monthly giveaway.
And – what do you know – it is giveaway announcement day.
The winner of all of these goodies is:
{isn’t that the cutest name?}
So, miss Lollie, send me a note and I’ll send you your little gift!
The October giveaway will be posted soon {as soon as I decide what will be in it! Any suggestions?}
And, later today I’ll post the getting to know you question.
Hope you have a beautiful friday, y’all!

Sorry if you were on here when I was changing things around. Something funky happened with this post and I think it should be okay now!
Jennifer
I so know what you mean about Beth Moore. She is way too cute and she seriously does make me want to read the Bible more.
lisa
You are just so precious, Emily! God bless you – seems to me you are being sanctified by the minute! Praise the Lord!
I have lived in Va all my life, and I never acquired that cute little twang (maybe the fact that my parents were from Philly had something to do with that)! Someday I pray I’ll win something of yours, but I just wanted to comment and tell you that you are precious!!! Have a groovy day, y’all!
Kimberly
Ditto what Jennifer wrote about Beth Moore! She is truly anointed by the Lord to write and teach AND she’s about the only southerner that I can listen to!! (It’s just that her outfits can sometimes be….hmmm) I’m from Oregon, so we are a little different with apparel!
Keep spreading Christ to others!
Megan
You would make the perfect Texan – glad you threw a y’all in there! I have done many Beth Moore studies and just started Revelation two weeks ago. She is awesome and I love that her big heart is reaching people around the world. Her nails make me laugh, but we see that a lot here in Texas! Big hair too! Have a great day!
Heather
SC here, I have a twang. Lived in upstate NY for a wee bit and they would ask me to talk. I purposely try to avoid saying ‘ya’ll’ and ‘bless your heart’. Just one of those things i guess..
Lauren
This cracked me up! Even though I have a pretty thick southern accent and live in the (relative) country, I don’t typically type the way I speak. But if you heard me in person, I let “y’all” and “fix’in to” and “bless your heart” and other such phrases you’d probably not understand fly about every other word! But it always nice to hear someone appreciate it rather than poke fun:) Beth Moore is great too..I’ve only done one of her Bible studies, but I’m dying to do more!

I live in Spokane,Wa now, but I’m from Georgia. When I moved away I realized that my accent was associated with being uneducated, so I tried to cover it up. Now that I am older and my accent has faded, I wish I would have been as proud of it as I am now! But just get me on the phone with Daddy and it comes right back!!
Love your blog, Emily! I know you say you can’t do it all, but you inspire me and make me feel like I can
Wish we lived closer cause we have a lot in common! Keep up the beautiful work!

Take it from this southern girl – “ya’ll” is a statement used grealy around my parts – typed, said, written out, you name it we use the term. Congrats to your winner and thanks for thinking our southern drawl is charming – I have gotten some pretty negative feedback west of Texas so it is quite refreshing.

You’re so funny! I say y’all. I call my baby girl “darlin” A LOT! And, I absolutely LOVE Beth Moore. Yes, I am from the South and live in the South. I also say, “bless her heart” a lot, too.
Mary
I’m from Florida, born and raised, which is the south, but not southern. I have the slang but not the twang, and that’s just not cute.
Where are you from?
emily
I am from Seattle, Washington where there are no accents, just a lot of coffee.
Bethany
Hey there! I’m from San Antonio and we definitely say y’all.
Love your blog by the way- this is my first comment, so, hi!
Britny
I am from San Antonio and I use y’all a lot! Oh, and fixin’ to! Love it! Don’t really have a southern accent, though! Need to know more about Beth Moore!
Leyla
I’m from Texas and from the time I was a little girl I worked really hard to ‘talk right’. I didn’t want to feed into the stereo type of us all riding around on horses, driving trucks and listening to country music. I still ‘talk right’ but the older I get the less I care and the more country I sound. I can’t count how many times I say ‘y’all’ in a day and I have acryllic french nails …so much for me not living up to stereo types of Southern women
Lisa Qsar
Yeah for Lollie. We go to church together. She is just as cute as her name too. Hooray!!
rae
you made me also want to say y’all. so i did and linked it back to your blog. you are also really making me excited for bible study to start. i’ve missed beth and her fake nails. xo
Jane
Emily- I’m from Atlanta, GA and we would love to show you southern hospitality. I’m 31 and a bunch of my friends mom’s are known as the Wedding Belles and do these incredible southern weddings. They say things like “Yooo-hooo” when they walk in the door and host tea parties and lunches on their porches. It’s a wonderful place to live. Go ahead and say y’all! It just makes sense!!!
Tammy
You did good. The only thing I would have changed is…”I’m fixin to announce the give a way”. I hope you make it to Texas again, come to Austin, we’ll show you a good time!
Mary Lemon
Hi Emily, I’m from Nebraska so we don’t say ya’ll but I love a Texas accent. I’ve been doing Beth Moore studies for over 10 years and love her and her studies. Although it’s hard to get all of the homework done! Whew! She’s awesome. It’s funny to see her old studies and the BIG HAIR! I love your blog–you’re soooo talented and I think it’s great that your hubby is such a big help. My husband helps me somewhat (I do staging in additon to being a Realtor) but he doesn’t really get involved. You have the best tutorials. Can’t wait to try some of them!
Krishna
Girl…thanks for some southern love! I’m from Birmingham, Al & don’t get alot of appreciation for my southern drawl outside of the south. People think we are uneducated hicks. I love my accent & my sweet 3yo daughter has a voice like thick molasses! Cracks us up! My parents (Mamie & Big Daddy as they are called now) own a wedding venue that looks straight out of Gone with the Wind (check it out http://www.arosewoodevent.com) I have so many wonderful pictures of my kids running around on the grounds! God bless Beth Moore & her witness for the Lord. Keep spreading the good word sugar!
Emily, Timeless Paper
I grew up on a farm in Arkansas and always tried to cover my southern accent. Now that I live in Philadelphia, I embrace the southern charm of an accent. People up here seem to love it! I use the word “ya’ll” as much as possible. I think it’s funny when my husband, Michael, tries to “do” a southern accent. My favorite thing is when he plays and sings “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver at the piano. It reminds me of my life in the south and is a fun change from the classical pieces.
Jen Anderson
Emily, I’m from Louisiana and it makes my heart happy that you love a good “ya’ll”. I feel like the south has some of the funniest and sweetest characters you’ll ever meet. Hope you get a chance to make it down here! I think you’d fit right in!
colleen
Hey Emily! (yes, we say hey with 2 syllables!) I was born in South Carolina, moved to Georgia, went to college in Alabama and still live in Birmingham! So yeas, (2 syllables) you can call me a bonified southern girl. While some people find that others think we are hicks, i have found that my “cute little southern drawl” was a ticket to open doors as long as my intelligence led the way! I once got into to a lot of REALLY nice places for free in Chicago because of me southern-ness! A few other southern phrases that i love, “lost as cooter brown”, “over yonder”, “naked as a jay bird”, “I’ll holler at you!” “let me carry you home”. Now i know this next one plenty of people say but it is what i would say if you came to my house, “come on in, doors open!”
emily
So please tell me … what does “lost as a cooter brown” mean? I’ve never heard that one!
LLH Designs
I love that you love our “y’all!” use it as much as you want! When I’m in Maine each summer, my “y’all” is always a dead giveaway that I’m not from there! And yes, they definitely say it in San Antonio. Everyone in Texas says it…that and yeehaw and howdy. Wink!
Krishna
Emily let me enlighten you…”cooter brown” – he seems to be a mythical person conjured up in the south that stays drunk (ever heard of drunker than cooter brown?). I haven’t actually ever heard lost as cooter brown…but I guess since he’s a drunk he stays lost alot (snort…snicker) We have so many comical sayings down here…I think we could keep you in stitches for weeks. I use “well dadgumit” alot (sad thing is I honestly don’t know how to spell it).
Robyn Hollas
I actually looked up Cooter Brown on Wikipedia. Not very flattering for anyone. I’d advise staying in the dark besides none of the “stories” are reported as accurate just assumptions. I was born in TN and raised in TX. Different parts of the south have different accents. Family from MS talks slower. TN family says darlin’. TX (including me) says y’all. Alot. Our sayings are pretty funny.

ME TOO! I Love the romanticism of the south, the southern drawl and going to Texas is a dream!! Go ahead and try y’all….I use it ALL the time! It’ll be fun…it might even make ya smile
Kelsey
I just ran across your blog today and you’re so inspiring.
As someone born and raised in Texas who has spent the last 7 years in Austin, I can tell you that y’all is very common (and I personally say darlin’, but it sounds funny when I say it too often). I distinctly recall being in Atlanta for a church youth gathering and meeting people from the northern US who kept asking us to repeat sayings.
Donna
I just moved to Seattle last Monday from Atlanta. Apparently, I have quite a southern accent since everyone double takes and says “you must be from the South” whenever I open my mouth. Who knew?
In the middle of packing my house & prepping for a traveling Christmas, a sorority sister forwarded me the link to your holiday tags – wonderful. I’ve been clicking around ever since & was quite startled to discover you live here. Seeing the beauty & warmth you create makes it somehow seem less like Seattle is a foreign land. Just when I needed a little lift. The Lord does work in mysterious ways.
Melissa
Raised in TX my entire life, I DO use “y’all” quite often! The stereotype is that we are all cowboys wearing boots and hats, but actually, I don’t have any friends that do. There are quite a few trucks, large SUVs, and people with southern hospitality, though. I can’t imagine living anywhere else! Although, visiting a northern state would be wonderful. I’ve never been anywhere north of Oklahoma! Come on down to Houston!
