a latte a day …

While looking through my most recent instagram photos, I noticed a theme.

warming up with a latte at an outdoor concert at the winery

praying this latte will turn into liquid patience on a particularly grumpy-mommy day

mixing up my own iced latte for an afternoon pick-me-up

coffee date with our little girl

latte sipping while working earlier this week

Now I know I’m from Seattle, but this latte habit is actually a fairly new one for me. I’ve always enjoyed an occasional creamy coffee treat, but lately I’ve actually craved it. Is it the taste? The warmth? The experience? Maybe all of the above.

I’m not terribly picky about my coffee – except I like it decaf, nonfat and extra hot. And only half the amount of syrup as usual, but definitely not the sugar-free kind. Hold the whip.

Okay, maybe I am a bit high-maintenance.

Grabbing coffee while out and about can get a bit spendy and so I’m thinking about following my best friend K.C.’s lead and purchasing one of these:

It steams the milk to your desired temperature, then just pour over strongly brewed coffee, add syrup of choice and you’ve got your own homemade latte.

My kids will like that you can add chocolate chunks to it and make hot cocoa.

And maybe while I’m at it, I should purchase this cute print from madebygirl like Holly has on her desk.

I do love blogs and coffee.

How about you? What’s the most high-maintenance coffee drink you’ve ever ordered?

I’m pretty simple with my order, tall skinny chai tea latte. Compared to some I hear order, anyway. It gets to be an expensive habit. I may have to check out the little steamer.

I’m not really a coffee or tea fan but I do love some hot cocoa or french vanilla cappuccino!

I’m admit I am a addicted to coffee – And I agree it’s not just the taste, but the entire experience. My usual is a non-fat grande latte or capp. (no decaf for me please – I NEED CAFFEINE) Love the looks of that little machine. May have to check that out. I have a regular capp maker, but it doesn’t steam the milk very well.

sipping on a soy pumpkin spice latte right now :)

  5. Beth September 14, 2012 at 5:24 am #

Oh my goodness – I feel ridiculous when I order at Starbucks! I always get a tall, 1/2 caff, soy latte with one pump of syrup. I keep trying to word it in different ways in hope I will land upon one that sounds reasonable, but I’m not sure it will ever flow well. But they’re delicious!

  6. Nicki September 14, 2012 at 5:25 am #

I’m not a very picky when it comes to my coffee either – depending on the day and my mood it’s either a grande or venti chai tea latte. Although, I do agree, I found that I am starting to crave it more and more – especially when I go straight to work. Hm, may also have to look into that steamer.

My husband and I just bought a Mr. Coffee brand latte maker at Target last weekend! We always drink coffee or tea in the morning but after having been out to breakfast one Sunday morning and enjoying our lattes so very much my husband said ” why don’t we find a way to do this every day”…..so off to Target we went after church and sure enough they had several options.

We choose the Mr Coffee one because it brews and coffee and steams and froths the milk at the same time in the same machine, very handy! It also has a heat and froth setting you can use to freshen up your second cup if it takes a while to get to. Also, I’m sure it will be employed for hot chocolate by my little ones this winter :o)

Off to get my second cup now…..

If you’re not too sure about the commitment on another appliance, try IKEA’s milk frother, http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10076320/ .

I am Boring!!!! I order a nonfat latte except at Christmas then I splurge on an eggnog latte. Yummy!! I can’t wait to look into these new coffee makers that froth the milk and brew the coffee. I didn’t even know they had them except for the really expensive cappuccino makers. I need to get put a little more…

I have been ordering the same Grande Non-Fat Vanilla Latte for so long at Starbucks that the barista will make it for me when I walk in the door and I rarely have to tell the cashier what I ordered. I guess that’s a little sad!

For what it’s worth – I microwave 1/2 cup of milk at home for 55 seconds to pour in my coffee. Gets it pretty hot! Doesn’t make fancy hot chocolate though.

I highly recommend the Mr Coffee Latte maker as well. Bought one last November and have enjoyed it everyday since. I buy Starbucks syrup and coffee to use in it. It makes such good lattes and saves so much money. Buy at Bed Bath and Beyond and use a 20% coupon!

  12. meganleiann September 14, 2012 at 7:51 am #

Ha! I just use that little $2 battery-powered milk-frother from Ikea. It works beautifully! I get better foam than at many coffee shop.

My Starbucks treat is the new salted caramel. 1/2 caff. But I do like a peppermint mocha 1/2 caff and have to have the whip on that one. Or the old yummy standby mocha, 1/2 caff, skim, no whip…..mmmmmm I’m thinking I need to run out to Starbucks.. Enjoy the weekend!

I own that blogs and coffee print and love it. :) That coffee maker looks neat, I’ve never seen it before?! I’m a vanilla latte girl, nothing too complicated….or just home brewed coffee with lots of creamer, hehe. PS – you are featured on my blog today!!!!!!!

  15. Jera September 14, 2012 at 8:22 am #

I moved to Seattle 2 years ago. I think for the first 6 months I held on something hot to drink. Now I dont do it 24 hrs a day but I love my coffee.

I have found a couple of coffee trailers that give you BIG discounts when you buy a punch card from them.

    I love your blog too.

  16. Jennifer September 14, 2012 at 8:26 am #

I always get a caramel macchiato, light on the caramel, at Starbucks. I haven’t tried a whole lot of the drinks available elsewhere just because I’m not such a huge coffee fan. I have however begun to save the undrunk coffee out of the pot every morning and to make my own coffee frapaccinos in the afternoons using the Almond Joy creamer available. Man, it’s good!

  17. Linda September 14, 2012 at 8:30 am #

My usual order at “Bucks” is Decaf – Tall – 1 pump – Skinny Vanilla Latte. I can recite it in my sleep….. maybe I have once or twice. My hubby gets my fix for me on Saturday and Sunday mornings and he used to carry a little piece of paper in his wallet with ‘my drink’ written on it.
Even though I live in AZ where it is a gazillion degrees on many days, I still love a hot latte! I’m going to check out that little machine. I’m sure it would pay for itself in no time flat.

My husband bought me a mr. Coffee latte machine last year for Christmas. It is awesome!

  19. Elise September 14, 2012 at 8:56 am #

Definitely need my venti Americano with steamed non-fat milk every day!

I am working my way through reading your blog (I used to live in the Pacific Northwest and it makes me miss home so much!) and absolutely love it! I just bought a box of the vintage vocab words and was wondering if you have any of your amazing ideas to use them for – I couldn’t resist buying them, but now am unsure of what to do with them all :)

  20. Beth September 14, 2012 at 8:57 am #

I love it! I order lattes the exact same way–and if we’re in a drive through, I usually have to lean over and yell into the speaker so my husband doesn’t have to repeat the high-maintenance order. :-) Decaf, non-fat, half syrup, no whip. . I haven’t yet asked for extra hot–but that’s a great idea considering I always think it cools off way too fast.
    Love your blog!

  21. Erica September 14, 2012 at 8:59 am #

Hi Emily…well I live in Seattle and I’m a barista so I get lots of high-maintenance drinks ordered all day long. The weirdest one was a tall breve hot chocolate with a pat of butter steamed with the milk and no whipped cream. A breve is made with half and half…He said it tasted like melted ice cream! He was good sport about it and admitted it was slightly ridiculous, but you want what you want, right?

  22. Annie September 14, 2012 at 9:03 am #

decaf Venti skinny no foam pumpkin spice latte. i’m one of those who thinks she’s low maintenance but is sorely wrong. ;)

  23. Jen F September 14, 2012 at 9:10 am #

I’m pretty high maintenance with my coffee drinks, but when I’m shelling out sometimes close to $5 for a drink, I don’t feel guilty about it! During the summer (at Starbucks), I’ll get a venti Americano, decaf with 2 pumps of coconut, and add some half n half. What I like about Starbucks is that when I use a registered gift card, my soy and syrups are free!

  24. Tonia September 14, 2012 at 9:21 am #

Love my coffee and the whole experience. My drink of choice changes with the seasons but usually involves caramel. Right at this moment I’m craving a pumpkin spice latte. Half caff, yes, but no skim milk please – 2% works for me and I need my whipped cream on top. <3

My morning coffee comes from our Bunn coffee maker (so amazingly fast!) and I usually use a flavored creamer. ID has a salted caramel mocha creamer coming out next month. :-)

  25. Susan September 14, 2012 at 9:22 am #

I can’t wait for cooler weather. One, I love it. Two, I no longer have to order my persnickety Iced, grande, decaf, three pump, 1% mocha without whipped cream. I am NOT high maintenance but you would never know it from my summer coffee obsession. In the fall all I need is a skinny latte – I add my own nutmeg (I keep a shaker in the car…is that bad?). Hooray for the milk steamer ditty-bob – must get one soon!

  26. Hannah Bunker September 14, 2012 at 9:29 am #

I just did a blog post about how much coffee I drink and how many pictures I take of all the coffee I drink. I said, “Where your instagrams are, there your heart his also” Matthew 6:21 lol.

    http://hannahbunker.com/for-where-your-instagrams-are-there-your-heart-will-be-also/

My fanciest drink is just a vanilla soy latte, no foam. Nothing too fancy. :)

  27. Sarah Barksdale Design September 14, 2012 at 9:32 am #

I do love blogs and coffee too. I probably need one of those milk steamers because pumpkin spice lattes are taking over my wallet lately

  28. Tabitha September 14, 2012 at 11:17 am #

I LOVE Caffe Appassionato!! I miss that place! When I lived on Queen Anne I went there regularly with a dear friend — the owners are very special people!
Most complicated drink that I order occasionally at Starbucks is: A Venti Decaf Soy Carmel Macchiato with Toffee Nut syrup instead of Vanilla with Whip and extra Carmel… It’s really good though!

  29. Margaret September 14, 2012 at 12:15 pm #

Tall Mocha, decaf if it’s in the evening, non fat, no whip. Actually, sadly enough, they know the order…….. I don’t really have to tell them anymore. I am loving that steamer tho, you may be on to something there! I am picky about my coffee and we have a local roaster that is awesome. His coffee, steamed cream, and some dark chocolate! I say yes!!

  30. jen September 14, 2012 at 1:12 pm #

most high-maintenance drink…this summer I discovered that Starbucks doesn’t have a decaf option for their iced coffees…but I wanted something with more coffee and less milk than a latte. So a helpful barista hooked me up with an iced, decaf americano with milk and one pump of coconut (took a couple tries to get the flavor just right…two pumps was too much, one pump, just perfect!).

  31. missy September 14, 2012 at 4:45 pm #

Love my lattes! I have a coffee shop within walking distance in my neighborhood and I love going down there. My daughter likes to go to the Starbucks drivethru on the way to school and usually gets a white chocolate mocha. The other morning she got a pumpkin spice latte. The girl at the window suggested she get a half white chocolate mocha/half pumpkin latte. My daughter said it was wonderful!!!

  32. Nicole September 14, 2012 at 5:19 pm #

I’m laughing at this post because I’m in the same boat :) I hadn’t heard of the two dollar milk frother from Ikea so I might need to check that out first! Did you say where the print is from? I love it!

  33. Mary September 14, 2012 at 6:41 pm #

During the summer I am a Greek-style frappe fan, but sometimes I run out of coffee or the time to make it, so I head to Starbucks. I feel like an idiot cliche when I order my grande vanilla iced coffee in a venti cup, fill the rest with skim. Oh, an can you halve the number of pumps? Great, thanks!

    Ugh. But yummm…

  34. Diane | An Extraordinary Day September 14, 2012 at 7:47 pm #

Forget the coffee…..I’m a cocoa girl. The real deal. Warmed super creamy raw milk with organic dutch cocoa, a dash of stevia….all whipped up nice and frothy with my stick blender….Yum! And if I’m feeling festive….I might at some sea salt, and/or cinnamon, vanilla, or even cayenne…or all…together. I’ve even been known to thrown in a dash of nutmeg (not with all that other stuff – teehee). Real rich dutch hot cocoa is my absolute most favorite thing in all of life. The ultimate comfort food. I think I could have one for each of my meals. Oh wait. I’ve done that!!! Heehee!

  35. Devon September 14, 2012 at 8:51 pm #

Oh, I am a total drink snob. After perfecting it for a couple of years, I order a tall, 1 pump Cinnamon Dolce, soy, no water Chai Latte. It’s totally ridiculous – & sadly my 4 year can almost recite my drink order – but it is heaven. Especially on those grumpy mommy mornings :)

  36. Christie September 14, 2012 at 9:36 pm #

I’m a fellow PNW girl who loves my coffee too, but I’m pretty simple … french press brew with heavy cream. Mmmmm. And I’m so lucky that my husband sells Peet’s coffee! And so much yummier and cozier at home in the morning than going out!

  37. Gretchen September 15, 2012 at 7:09 am #

I too love blogs and coffee. I have a fancy schmancy espresso machine that has a steamer wand like they do at Starbucks and other coffee places, but it takes so much time that I prefer the lazy way. I brew coffee and then add vanilla soy milk (this has revolutionized coffee for me) and splenda. Not as good as Starbucks but definitely cheaper!

  38. Becky September 15, 2012 at 4:03 pm #

My drink from starbucks is a tad involved- tall pikes place in a grande cup two pumps white mocha filled with low fat milk. Whew & yum. Coffee + Blogs = Heaven

  39. Sara McAllister September 17, 2012 at 4:33 am #

Nonfat Grande Chai Tea Latte – No Whip. I feel kind of snooty when I order this, but it is absolutely delicious!

  40. Karyn October 8, 2012 at 5:27 pm #

Here in Minnesota, Caribou is the coffee of choice. I have never had a cup of black coffee and have only been drinking the creamy delicious foo-foo kind for about a year. Now, I can’t more more than a couple days without one. I always order a vanilla zebra (1/2 white-1/2dark choc) mocha made with skim and full whip. I never in a million years would have thought I would order something so high maintenance!

At home, I make a cup of straight black coffee in my hubbies french press, and heat up a cup of vanilla almond milk with 2 spoons of Trader Joes sipping chocolate…and mix! Yum!!

  41. Elizabeth C. October 11, 2012 at 8:09 pm #

Did you get the steamer? The hubs got me one for Christmas a couple years ago and I used it every day for my lattes. (Notice that is plural!)

You will love it! And the cost savings is substantial.

    • emily October 16, 2012 at 11:35 am #

I haven’t ordered one yet, but thanks for the motivation!

Ooooohh, gotta get one of those milk frothers! While I’m at it, I’d love to get that mug with my initial. Mind sharing where you bought it?

    Emily,

You are hysterical!… that’s caffeine talking and I can so relate. There is a little caffeine in decaf!! Or maybe a contact high!

Love the mousepad. You have inspired me to have my rust ol’ Singer machine serviced tomorrow!
