new year resolutions {update}

It’s been three months {1/4 of the year} since we all set our goals for the new year. Since I am more of a reflect-on-the-past-type-of-girl than a plan-for-the-future-type-of-girl {what does that say about me?!} I thought it would be fun to take a few moments to see how we’re doing with our 2012 resolutions. We’ll start with mine, but I’d love to hear how you are doing with yours, too.

To recap, here were my resolutions:

1. eat well & exercise

2. wear a bikini in hawaii and look decent in it

3. say yes to my kids

4. close office doors at 3:30 everyday

5. take ballet

{You can read the full resolution post here}

And now for the update:

1. Surprisingly, I’ve done well with this one. Ryan has tried his best over the last few years to get me to give up crackers, sugar, processed foods in general and I have been fighting the whole way. But I’m giving in a little and like the results. I’ll write a food post soon because I have lots more to say about my issues with giving up Oreos.  And Ritz. And …

2. Probably the main reason the food & exercise thing is going well for me is because of goal #2. We leave for Maui in just a few days and I’ve been working, working, working on getting this body bikini-ready. To tell you the truth, I am still super self-conscious, but I’ll will be sporting a bikini nevertheless.

We’re going with five other couples {without kids!} and I’m hoping I’ll get there and forget about the wrinkly skin on my tummy and just enjoy our vacation.

3. Still working on saying yes to the kids more. Although if you could have seen how much candy was consumed on Easter you would think I never say no.

4. The close-the-office-doors rule has been a really good one for our family. Sometimes boundaries are the best way to give freedom and this one has done it for me. It allows me to work when I need to work and be a mom when I need to be a mom.

5. And ballet.

I have been doing this video in preparation for Maui:

I love it and highly recommend it to anyone who likes ballet and wants a good toning video. But I will warn you that you may not be able to walk down stairs when you finish. You can purchase a copy here.

The video has been great, but what my goal really said was that I wanted to take a ballet class.

So just this week, I gathered all the courage I could muster and took an adult class at a local studio.

Yep, that’s me. Pink tights and all.

It was fun and it was way too advanced for me. I looked like a fish out of water. But I checked it off my list and I’m glad I did.

So, now it is your turn:

How are you doing with your resolutions?

Have you reached any goals? Are you on the way? Anything great come of your resolutions?

Have you let them go all together?

Please share …

Wow, you are going to have so much fun in Maui. I love the resolution of closing the office door at the end of the day. I need to add that one to the list. Sounds like you are doing great. I, too, am working at cutting out foods that are just not good for my body. That’s a hard one!

Maui with only grown-ups! Wow! I’d eat vegetables all year if it meant I could go back. I did just cross a big one off my list, one that’s been on the list for years. I wrote all about it here: http://www.detailgalblog.com/2012/03/here-to-crossing-off-list.html

Such an inspiring post! One of my resolutions was to spend more “intentional” time with my boys and let the chores wait. It has been fun–lots of lego playing, UNO, Star Wars, etc. So thankful to stay home with them and watch them grow. With our recent move and finishing the school year at home, we have a lot of time together:) Have a blast in Maui!

Way to go on your resolutions Emily! Its a good reminder to all of us to check back on our progress. Have you ever heard of Pure Barre? Its a ballet-based workout class, I think you would like it.

Can I make a few Maui suggestions? And of course they involve food. You are welcome! The road to Hana is worth the drive just to eat at Brudda Hut’s roadside stand. Best chicken I’ve ever had in my life! You won’t regret it. Also, go have lunch at this place…

and eat the Sashimi Napolian. I dream about it. :)
    Have a blast!

Cute swimsuit! My 2012 goals are to get outside more, journal more (on paper), and cook. I’m doing pretty good with staying on track! Great post and reminder to stay focused on goals and resolutions!

I just bought the ballet video!
I started ballet again this year too and I’m loving it.

I’m so impressed!! Congratulations on your progress! I can’t wait to hear how you cut our oreos!! I can’t help but keep our cookie jar full! And I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one with wrinkly skin on my tummy! It happened after my second pregnancy and something tells me it will still be there after this third pregnancy as well. I guess it’s a trade off for the those little bundles of joy but if you find the secret weapon to get rid of them – let us know!!

I’ve been lurking for awhile … maybe I followed a WIWW post to find you? Anyway, I also have four kids and I could identify with what you wrote about that. I’m finally commenting because I have wanted to take ballet too, and thank you for that video recommendation!

I’ve done 37 days of the 30 Day Shred, so that’s been the biggest thing. I’ll bet it felt really good to go to the ballet class, no matter how awkward it may have felt. :)

Emily, you’re doing great! I wouldn’t be caught DEAD in a bathing suit right now, but you wear it and ROCK it!!!!! My list of resolutions is a bit longer, but the year is going well and I’m excited about the progress I’ve made thus far. You can read my resolution post (and March update) here —> http://nicoleandkevin.wordpress.com/2012/04/01/resolutions-update-march/

I had to go back to check my list, not a good sign. http://www.seewhatiseadesigns.com/2012/01/new-year.html After reviewing, however, I realized I’m doing pretty well. The big thing for me has been taking a photo a day. We’re living in a completely foreign land and I want to savor every moment of it. Most days its a snapshot of the view out my window or of progress on my artwork, but I’m pleased. The rest are being worked on, but steadily.

Have fun in Maui, I have many a fond memories of mailing coconut postcards and convertible drives on the way to Hana.

FIFTH position! FIFTH!!!!! I am more impressed than I can ever say!!! You go, girl!

  14. {darlene} April 11, 2012 at 8:37 am #

oh, it will be SO worth it to feel like a million bucks in hawaii. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth!
I have that dvd…. and whew, it is tough!!!! I have been getting back into my workouts, and I am working up the nerve to pull that one off the shelf! ugh!

  15. Katie@Paisley Print Shoes April 11, 2012 at 8:43 am #

I LOVE this post!! Have a GREAT time in Maui and ROCK that bikini. Congratulations on taking the ballet class – I think in many ways that takes much more courage than wearing a bikini!

  16. Lydia April 11, 2012 at 8:54 am #

We spent part of our honeymoon on Maui, It was Beautiful and the weather was perfect! Enjoy your time there! I would love to go back!

Your resolutions are so inspiring! I’m so impressed that you took a ballet class- I don’t think I would have the guts! You’ll have so much fun in Hawaii- I’m jealous!

I didn’t really do resolutions (I never make realistic ones, it seems).. but I have been trying to be intentional about being thankful.. trying to have a thankful heart and really appreciate all of the little and everyday things I take for granted. So far.. pretty good :)

  18. Jessica April 11, 2012 at 9:15 am #

I just did a re-cap of how I’m doing on my resolutions on my blog as well. It’s a mixed bag. Some of them are being met with flying colors…others are miserable failures! But I know what I need to work on over the next few months, that’s for sure!

  19. Mary-Frances Kenney April 11, 2012 at 9:23 am #

I’ve always heard my Director in Mary Kay and our National Directors say, “If you have a goal tell someone.” And your post here reminds me of how true that is. If you have a goal tell someone – or everyone. You’re more likely to do it than not because people are going to want to know how you’re coming along. Thank you for that reminder. I honestly can’t remember if I made any resolutions this year. But I have made some business goals and they are coming along nicely. God is good! Great job with the bikini goal…the bikini is very cute too.

  20. Heidi April 11, 2012 at 9:26 am #

So fun! I’m so impressed that you’re ready to wear a bikini in MAUI! Have a wonderful time on your trip.

I love – and miss! – ballet. There’s a local studio that offers adult ballet classes and I can’t work up the nerve to go. You’ve inspired me to check the schedule and see if I can make it this week.

I love Resolution updates, because they always involve problems that have come up and solutions to make it work! I resolved to run 365 miles this year and it wasn’t going well until I signed up to run a 1/2 marathon in June. Now, I’m back on track and making up for lost time! It’s good to remember that just because you slip up, it doesn’t mean you can’t still make it happen!

  22. Madison April 11, 2012 at 11:09 am #

Don’t think you can post a picture of cute shoes like that and not tell where you got them!

I just bought them at the Gap factory store.

  23. michele b. April 11, 2012 at 11:40 am #

Way to go! (Way to still rock that 5th position, too!)

  24. Jenny April 11, 2012 at 1:37 pm #

yay for you! Eating healthy and excercising can make such a huge different in a variety of different aspects in life. I met my goal of losing the rest of my”baby weight” after almost 4 years and 2 kids and I feel great… BUT have the same quam about that belly wrinkle/jiggle… does that ever go away after multiple kids?! I only have two!

  25. alyssa @ frugal stepmom April 11, 2012 at 3:43 pm #

I resolved to finish “The Resolution for Women” and then apply it, great results so far. My biggest hurdle, looking my husband and daughter in the eye when they are talking to me, it has blossomed our relationship SO much more than I even imagined [I'm a perpetual multi-tasker]. Way to go on your ballet!

  26. Jenna April 11, 2012 at 7:59 pm #

One of my resolutions was to take a ballet class too! Although, unlike you, I didn’t take ballet growing up. I’ve been taking it weekly since January, and I’m totally in LOVE! And – goodness – girl, your fifth position! Wow!

  27. bonnie k April 11, 2012 at 9:19 pm #

Hmmm, resolutions. My main goal was to FINALLY lose all the baby weight from my 2 year old. I joined a Crossfit bootcamp for 6 weeks and have kept going at least once a week to that and did a 4 week paleo diet and I can say happily, I’m almost at my pre-baby weight. Really, just a little bit of belly left… which might be there forever. ;-)

  28. Tikaa April 11, 2012 at 10:10 pm #

WOW, I love the resolution update and I heart Oreos and had to give to them up. Sad face….. Because who doesn’t love them, but my body had recently decided that it does not like gluten and sugar. Boohoo. I still love sugar.
Ballet, impressive. Your trip will be fabulous and you will look amazing. I found your blog from a neighbor. I’ll be back, again and again. Can’t wait to see vaca pics.

wear the bathing suit – with pride – one day you may look back at the pictures and and think “wow, I thought I was fat then but look how good I looked!” keep rockin’

  30. Taylor April 12, 2012 at 7:35 pm #

love the bathing suit…might i ask where you got it?

  31. Emily April 12, 2012 at 8:00 pm #

One of my resolutions was to prey regularly because when I made the list I was a Christian. Well, not only do I not prey regularly, but I’ve become agnostic too. That just shows you how well I’m doing. ;-)

The rest were similar to yours. Get healthy and go to ballet classes.

  32. Erika April 14, 2012 at 10:19 am #

Good for you! Ballet is wonderful for your posture, self-esteem and body. I took ballet as a child and people still comment on my posture and how I move so gracefully…you’ve inspired me to do ballet again! I loved it! And still do! I didn’t make any resolutions this year…well, except to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight! Ballet will definitely help!

  33. Jennifer April 14, 2012 at 10:02 pm #

Ha! As I’m reading your post I’m sitting in bed eating a sleeve of Oreos. ;) yum yum. I took ballet in college and loved it. I too felt like a fish out of water at times. Especially when it came to being limber. Not so good. But I would love to do it again. Have a wonderful vacation!!!!!
