the state of affairs

Melaine from My Sweet Savannah is coming over with a friend for lunch in a few days.

And this is what my house currently looks like:

messy living room

messy boys room

messy stairs

messy dining

messy kitchen

messy office

Ummm : looks like I have some picking up to do!

This is what happens when A} you’ve been out of town for the past 10 days B} you have four young kids who are quite proficient at scattering toys, clothes and pillows and C} you decide to re-arrange your office instead of cleaning.

Priorities, I tell you. Priorities.

Love people who are brave enough to share some ‘real’ pictures of their home. Thanks. Homes are for living in!

  2. Jessica May 10, 2012 at 6:39 pm #

God bless you for sharing. It’s nice to know that someone as fabulous as you, is not perfect.

  3. betsy May 3, 2012 at 7:48 pm #

Hi! I’m trying to get to pictures of your living room when the TV was above the fireplace, but the link will not work. How else can I search your blog to find living room pictures? Thanks!

  4. Michelle Marsh September 3, 2011 at 3:56 pm #

I’ve always liked you, now I love you! Thanks a million…for showing how we ALL really live — especially those of us with small kiddos! xo~M. p.s. Your home always looks good even when things are out of place!

  5. missy August 19, 2011 at 7:29 pm #

    Thank you!

  6. Kelli August 16, 2011 at 8:12 pm #

    Oh, yay! You are REAL!
    Me, too.

  7. Jami August 16, 2011 at 5:43 pm #

I love this post! I often wonder what a house as beautiful as your looks like on a normal day. THANK YOU!!!

  8. Catherine August 15, 2011 at 10:38 pm #

Seriously love you right now. lol.

  9. Whitney @ Whisker Graphics August 8, 2011 at 1:43 pm #

Our houses look so similar. Well mess-wise they do (you have much cuter furniture!). Thanks for sharing “real life” photos. I suspect that is how 90%+ of homes with kids look most of the time!

  10. Audra August 6, 2011 at 11:45 pm #

LOL! I am so glad you shared this. We just got back home from a 2 week road trip from WA to CA. My house is absolutely turned upside down! I would pile all my kids in the car and drive away, but that is a mess too:-) Oh well, at least the trip was a blast.

  11. Amanda August 6, 2011 at 1:58 pm #

The fact that you have proof of children is in itself beautiful…at least that is what I tell myself when my house looks just like that, which is VERY often! How comforting to see other people have the same struggles. I’ve found that dirty dishes hide well in the oven (beware of preheating without checking) and a multitude of junk can be quickly carted to the garage, since no one usually wants a tour of that particular place. Also, washers and dryers are great quickie hiding spots! Yes, I have practice.

  12. Tiah B August 5, 2011 at 10:15 am #

So nice to see someone post real pictures of their home. Every blog shows everything perfect, and we know that isn’t happening with kids.

  13. Samantha August 5, 2011 at 8:47 am #

As a mother of two little ones, I just want to say THANK YOU!!!!

  14. Ali August 4, 2011 at 12:57 pm #

Your house looks incredible for you being gone 10 days! Can’t imagine what my house would look like with me being gone for 10 days! :) My 3 kids love making pillow piles in the living room thing! I didn’t realize that this is really common!?! Made me giggle! :) I love the sneak peek of your house! It’s beautiful! I love those bunk beds? Where did you all buy those? So cool to have 2 sets of bunks in a room! Love that!

    ~ Ali

  15. Katie August 3, 2011 at 9:57 am #

I’m so with everyone else on this post- thank you, thank you, thank you for letting us see that your house is occasionally similar to ours on the messiness factor! The beauty still shines through!

  16. Michael at Blue Velvet Chair August 3, 2011 at 8:36 am #

I love the real side of living – especially when we see so much of the staged side of living in blogs. THIS is a house lived in by kids! So glad to see the human touch!

  17. Krista August 3, 2011 at 6:18 am #

I am so glad you posted this! My house has been a wreck this week and I’ve been having the hardest time getting the motivation to clean. I’m glad I’m not the only one!

  18. Erica @ Erica's Inspirations August 3, 2011 at 5:47 am #

Girl, I do the same thing (in regards to C). It is always more fun to re-arrange than it is to clean. I did that very thing to my Living Room on Saturday :)

  19. Susan August 2, 2011 at 9:13 pm #

Oh my! Where did you find those beautiful polka dot curtain panels?

  20. kim August 2, 2011 at 7:03 pm #

omg. i have the utmost respect for you just for posting this! i am going to immediately show it to my husband to drive my point home. i am not alone!! thank you! hahaha…

  21. Jo Dee Walker August 2, 2011 at 6:08 pm #

Awesome! Looks like my house but I’d have a bra or two laying around as well I’m sure. Cheers to happy messes and ” not in the mood” to clean it up!

  22. Jennie Larsen August 2, 2011 at 11:54 am #

so glad you are human. your home is beautiful and lived in. luv it.

  23. Jennifer G. August 2, 2011 at 9:43 am #

Thanks for being so real; it is refreshing!

  24. Roeshel August 2, 2011 at 9:07 am #

Looks familiar! ;) I make re-arranging my reward for cleaning. Motivation! Enjoy the visit! Sounds like a fun time!

  25. Misty August 2, 2011 at 8:22 am #

Looks like my house! Some days I just say, “I give up!” Did I mention I only have one child? Kuddos to you for keeping such a lovely house with 4 kiddos running around!

  26. emily August 2, 2011 at 7:59 am #

    thanks for keeping it real……

  27. betsy August 2, 2011 at 7:29 am #

thanks for sharing…..i am LOVING your polka dot curtains!!! do tell ~ where did you get them??!!!!

  28. brynn August 2, 2011 at 7:24 am #

I’m so glad you showed those pictures. Sometimes people only blog the perfect, staged elements of their homes and lives. This is a dose of reality and we all need it sometimes! Good luck with getting it ready for your guest. Sometimes that’s what I need to motivate me to tackle the mess! Love your blog!

  29. Peggy August 2, 2011 at 5:54 am #

I think you just made everyone feel a little bit better about themselves knowing that you are a real person with a house that isn’t a show room but full of memories and messes just like everyone else! Thanks for sharing this.

  30. Jennifer Rizzo August 2, 2011 at 5:24 am #

It will be fine! Melaine is totally laid back and cool. You are going to love her!

  31. hillary August 2, 2011 at 12:08 am #

    ha! love it!

  32. Tracy August 1, 2011 at 10:25 pm #

I’m glad you showed those pictures… reminded me of some ideas I want to show my husband for our house… :) My house might actually be cleaner then someone else’s right now! :)

  33. Diana August 1, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Yes, but at least under the mess, you’ve got a beautiful home! And is that a gray canvas Old Navy bag I spy on the stairs? I snatched it up at $4.99, could NOT pass up that deal!

  34. LLH Designs August 1, 2011 at 9:15 pm #

Funny…we all love beauty on blogs to a point. Every now and then, a fresh does of reality is a blessing. You house looks like your family is really LIVING! That’s awesome.

    xo,
    Linsey

  35. Alicia August 1, 2011 at 6:56 pm #

This made me smile. My sister-in-law came into town today with my niece and nephews. At 8pm she called to ask if they could stay here – they could be here in 20 minutes! We turned off the movie we were watching and all ran around picking up, vacuuming, wiping down counters, etc. right up until the doorbell rang! I’m glad I’m not the only one whose house isn’t “guest ready” all the time.

  36. Lou August 1, 2011 at 6:44 pm #

totally love your blog today…your honesty is refreshing~xo~

  37. Scooper August 1, 2011 at 6:42 pm #

Love that you are keepin’ it real! But even in disarray, it’s all still beautiful. : )

  38. Linda August 1, 2011 at 5:44 pm #

Thank you for being so transparent!! Us moms can aim for perfection so much and end up feeling like we’ve fallen short when in reality there is no “perfect life” but perfect moments. Your home looks beautifully “lived in”. As a fellow mom of 3 boys and new little princess (3 months) plus a homeschooling mom..it’s sooo refreshing to see pictures posted of what most of our homes really look like..wink wink.. You inspire so many with your transparency and humility not to mention your talent! May God continue to bless your talent and obedience to using the gifts He has given you!!

  39. Faith Wise August 1, 2011 at 5:40 pm #

Oh how I can relate and I don’t even have children yet. This was one of my favorite posts from you yet. Thanks for letting us in.

  40. Honey Ham August 1, 2011 at 3:20 pm #

YAY! Thank you for showing real life!

  41. Kristy August 1, 2011 at 2:58 pm #

Thank you for this post! Now I feel normal =) Me and my friends talk about you like you are a celebrity and I am always all…how does Emily Jones do it???? Nice to know your amazing house gets just as messy as mine =))))

  42. Robin@Highpointcircle.blogspot.com August 1, 2011 at 2:49 pm #

This is such a funny post because I was photographing some rooms today and thought how happy I was that the camera doesn’t pick up dirt on the floor and dust on the furniture! Thanks for keeping it real.

  43. gwendolyn August 1, 2011 at 2:30 pm #

    i love knowing i’m not alone. :)

  44. lizzy August 1, 2011 at 2:16 pm #

    LOVE it!
    Thanks Emily!

  45. I Live in an Antbed August 1, 2011 at 2:15 pm #

No sweat! It’ll get done. :) It still looks beautiful. Have the kids grab a couple of empty laundry baskets and put everything from each room that belongs somewhere else in the baskets. After collecting all the stuff that belongs somewhere else, they can straighten up what’s left in that room. As they carry the basket to the next room, they can do the same thing, leaving the things in the basket in the appropriate room as them come to them. Sometimes, setting it to music where they try to finish a room before a song plays for the second or third time while they sing along makes it fun, but keeps them moving and energized. Before you know it, much progress has been made, which is very encouraging to everyone. :)

  46. Traci August 1, 2011 at 1:25 pm #

I love that you showed how messy your house is!!!!!!! Makes the rest of us feel normal!

  47. Heather August 1, 2011 at 1:23 pm #

Thank you so much for sharing this! Makes me feel so much better…but honestly, yours really isn’t that bad!

  48. Tori August 1, 2011 at 12:54 pm #

Thanks for your transparency, Emily! Your house is not only beautiful, but lived-in. Love it.

  49. {hooked on hickory} August 1, 2011 at 12:39 pm #

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You made me fell so much better with this post!

  51. Meg August 1, 2011 at 12:21 pm #

I’d pick re-arranging instead of cleaning too… and I usually do!

    Good luck!

    Meg

  52. Carol August 1, 2011 at 12:16 pm #

I am glad that other people’s children put pillows all over the place. Everywhere. Makes me feel better.

  53. Kitty Wong August 1, 2011 at 11:57 am #

In that last photograph, do you know where that white dresser is from?

  54. Jana August 1, 2011 at 11:52 am #

Oh thank you so much for posting this!! My house is upside down right now and this just made my day to know that I’m not alone.

Off to rearrange my bedroom now…yep…skipping the cleaning for just one more day. :)

  55. Jennifer@TheWaymanFamilyNest August 1, 2011 at 11:52 am #

Thank you for this refreshingly, honest post! I think it’s nice to see your home looking “lived in.” it just means your family is enjoying it! I’ve got to go pick my house up too. We’re adopting from Africa and have a social worker coming to our house tomorrow. Maybe I’ll be brave and take pictures for my blog! : )

  56. Heather L. August 1, 2011 at 11:31 am #

Thank you so much for posting these photos! With five kids, this is how my house normally looks, and it would I think even if I spent 10 hours a day picking up!!!! ;)

  57. Kat August 1, 2011 at 11:17 am #

So refreshing! I’m so glad I’m not the only one with a messy house today!!

  58. Sara @ It's Good to be Queen August 1, 2011 at 11:12 am #

thank you so much for the real stuff. your house is so so dreamy…even with a little mess here and there. it’s good to know i’m not alone with the kid mess!

  59. Anissa August 1, 2011 at 11:02 am #

THANK YOU!!!! oh wait, did I mention to say THANK YOU!!!! I even called my bff to make sure she saw your post because your honesty made our day! GOOD LUCK with the clean up:)

  60. Diane @ Longaberger Lifestyle August 1, 2011 at 11:00 am #

Seriously girl! Dear Melanie could be coming in a hour…and between you and your munchkins…your house would look great when she arrived!! You’re messy isn’t scary. But, your office…ha!! Why is it our offices turn into cyclone centers? :D Thanks for keepin’ it real!

  61. paige August 1, 2011 at 10:13 am #

    too funny!!
have fun with melaine. you seattle girls are so lucky! :)

  62. Rhonda August 1, 2011 at 10:08 am #

Girl, you got nothin’ on me! Seeing as how I’m doing some hard-core purging and assigning of closet stuff today, your post encourages me (i.e., even the best sometimes have their ‘moments’). :)

  63. Kate August 1, 2011 at 10:04 am #

Sometimes it is SO NICE to see that although your life looks picture perfect on your blog, that you are real just like the rest of us. THANK YOU!!!!!

thank you also for the JDC designs printables! My 5 year old loves to send letters to her grandma and friends so we’ve already made several. It gives her something to do while her little sister sleeps.

  64. Alima August 1, 2011 at 10:03 am #

Ha! Looks about like my house usually does and I only have 1 toddler! It’s crazy how such a little human can make sucg a gigantic mess! :)
P.S. I HAVE to know where you got those polka dot curtains (or the polka dot fabric in the case that you made the curtains yourself)!!

  65. house mouse August 1, 2011 at 10:01 am #

What I love about these photographs is that they prove your priorities ARE in the right place. The little hands at creative play have left their mark. Letting them rearrange their world is so good for them!

  66. Jennifer August 1, 2011 at 10:00 am #

You made me feel so much better with those pics of your home! It’s a daily struggle for someone who enjoys “a place for everything and everything in it’s place” and who has 3 girls 5 and under to relax and let the mess just happen sometimes. I think we’re kindred spirits – everything from your love of paper products to needing things visually in order! Love your blog!

  67. Stacey Woods August 1, 2011 at 9:21 am #

Ohh, my house looks very similar. Piles everywhere. But I agree, it’s so much more fun to rearrange the office rather than pick up the huge mess surrounding it! I share your priorities, apparently. ;)

  68. Janel August 1, 2011 at 9:19 am #

you just became my favorite blog :-) thanks for keepin’ it real!

  69. Erin August 1, 2011 at 9:16 am #

It’s so refreshing to see that your beautiful house looks like mine . . . kid chaos! Thank you for sharing–it makes me feel more human and less chaotic. :)

  70. Myriah Grubbs August 1, 2011 at 9:03 am #

This is a refreshingly honest blog post that makes my day!!!! :) The beauty about a blog is that you can freeze the small amount of perfection in your life in time. The downside is that it gives a false reality and unrealistic expectations for you to constantly live up to. Hahaha. I’m glad to know that even one of my very favorite adorable houses to look at, looks very much like mine most of the time!!! Thank you!

  71. Katy August 1, 2011 at 8:57 am #

Ah, my house has looked like this and worse! Have fun cleaning up. It’s funny how that always seems to happen right before company comes. :)

  72. kim durham August 1, 2011 at 8:57 am #

oh goodness…so nice to know that your house isn’t always perfect…but still looks uh-mazing!! love your blog!!

  73. Tonia August 1, 2011 at 8:54 am #

Emily- this is SO comforting, I cannot even tell you! We all wish our houses looked like yours and now we can see that sometimes, yours, looks, like OURS! At least the boys give some warning with the “Beware…” sign on their door. Thank you for the reality check. Have a wonderful day!

  74. charis August 1, 2011 at 8:54 am #

awesome. we had a similar state of affairs yesterday afternoon about 15 minutes before company arrived… needless to say there was a bit of a blur of furious “straightening” here. hope you enjoyed your time out of town! we look forward to some later on this week.

my recent post: only enough time to be thankful

  75. Melissa August 1, 2011 at 8:54 am #

    A. Pillow forts are awesome! B. Love your style. C. This makes me feel so much better about my house right now. =) Thanks for sharing.

  76. ange August 1, 2011 at 8:49 am #

  77. Melaine Thompson August 1, 2011 at 8:49 am #

leave it~it’s perfect, I’ll feel right at home :)

  78. Liz Cheek August 1, 2011 at 8:47 am #

My. I just say, beautiful! We all know you will have this looking BHG in no time but yes, thank you! This is a normal home with kids or as we call them our beautiful creatures of destruction! they look so cute yet so capable to take down the walls! Ahh, LOVE! And may I say rearranging your office is 1st priority! he he.

  79. Patti August 1, 2011 at 8:43 am #

Here’s something I know you can appreciate~ although your blog was in regards to the current state of your house all I can think about is ‘where did you get those fabulous dining room curtains?’ See…..we are able to look beyond all that!!!!!

  80. Sabrina Arave August 1, 2011 at 8:27 am #

I only have 2 little ones to scatter things about right now and it can get pretty messy so I can’t even imagine with 4. You have done such a good job making your house look so good though that no one would even notice the mess. Best looking mess I’ve seen!

  81. Alyssa Lettiere August 1, 2011 at 8:27 am #

I am so glad to see that I am not the only one…..my front room is a mess right now with construction (re-roof and having to close in the cathedral ceiling in our master bedroom). The mess tells me….. I have TOO MUCH stuff. Time to pare down. I am right there with you, have my aunt visiting this week…let’s just say the house will be a mess till ?????? Good luck, but I know that you will be a success.

  82. Kellyb August 1, 2011 at 8:23 am #

That is hysterical! Oh my goodness…..glad to see I’m not the only one who has company coming & starts a big project at the same time, while the rest of the house is in chaos. And I’m not laughing AT you, just WITH you ;) It use to scare my husband, now he just rolls his eyes & walks away……

  83. Kacey August 1, 2011 at 8:21 am #

    LOVE it! Beautiful and real!

  84. Lora August 1, 2011 at 8:16 am #

    Thanks for keeping it real!

  85. Donna August 1, 2011 at 8:15 am #

YEAHHH!!!! There’s hope for my house. Thank you for letting us see the mess. You have no idea how many times I’ve wondered….how does she do it? How does she keep her home so perfect with 4 kids?! What am I doing wrong! I’m sure you will whip everything together and your home will be pretty as a picture for your luncheon. What is on the menu?

  86. Maury August 1, 2011 at 8:14 am #

At least you can tell that under the mess, it’s really beautiful decor. Plus, the dining room looks pretty great!

  87. Amanda Eck-TheEckLife August 1, 2011 at 8:14 am #

oh girl! I have you beat by 1 tub of leggos, chewing gum stuck on the carpet, and squished cheetos on the couch! Thanks for keeping it real-because we ALL have our homes looking like this at one time or another (mine more often than not) LOL

  88. Aly August 1, 2011 at 8:13 am #

Love your home, Love that you are not perfect all of the time and LOVE the new dot curtains! Do tell where are they from?

  89. KK August 1, 2011 at 8:13 am #

Thanks for keeping it real! After all, it is called “real life” for a reason.

  90. Jamie August 1, 2011 at 8:10 am #

Well. I’m just so glad it isn’t just me! ;)

  91. Sandy August 1, 2011 at 8:01 am #

Love this! I’m grinning ear to ear at your honesty…so refreshing that you’re just like the rest of us mere mortals!

  92. {darlene} August 1, 2011 at 7:54 am #

    oh. how I hear ya.

  93. Dawn Lindley August 1, 2011 at 7:48 am #

I sincerely appreciate getting to see the “before” pictures!

  94. Shona August 1, 2011 at 7:47 am #

It’s beautiful! It’s a happy home that may not be perfect all the time, but everyone is having fun! Enjoy the toys while they’re around….even when you’re tripping over them!

  95. Amanda August 1, 2011 at 7:41 am #

I LOVE it! Thank you for sharing pics to show that your house is not always perfect… I suddenly feel a whole lot better about all the piles on my dining room table and our messy bedrooms! :-)

  96. Katie @ Wildwood Creek August 1, 2011 at 7:37 am #

You are a very brave woman for posting pics of a day in the life! We live in our homes and not every day is picture perfect. Thanks for making the rest of us feel normal.

  97. Amanda M. August 1, 2011 at 7:32 am #

Ahh, yes. The children are oh so good at scattering!

  98. Kay August 1, 2011 at 7:32 am #

That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing – makes me feel normal for having just as much of a mess at my house right now. Yet here I am reading your blog instead of cleaning…

  99. laura August 1, 2011 at 7:11 am #

this made me chuckle….love the candid-ness!

  100. cailan August 1, 2011 at 6:56 am #

Ooops. Time for power cleaning (for me too!) and three cheers for another office rearrangement – can’t wait to see it!

  101. Heather August 1, 2011 at 6:50 am #

Thank you so much! I needed this.. because currently my house looks much the same minus the fabulous decor. :)

  102. Angie August 1, 2011 at 4:58 am #

Thank goodness…. I thought I was the only one who starts a crazy, non important project like re coloring the grout of my kitchen tiles in the middle of my house going from picture perfect to manic mess. Thanks for sharing Emily!

  103. Jo August 1, 2011 at 4:46 am #

Thank you so much for showing us that your house is not always perfect. We never get to see the “real” life of a blogger, so I appreciate it.

    • Vanessa August 1, 2011 at 8:07 am #

I really appreciate this too! As humble as you (and so many believer bloggers) can be about “not being perfect,” it’s hard not to read your blog, look at all your beautiful pics, and just assume you’ve got it all together! I know we only see a sliver of one beautiful side of a beautiful life–but it’s encouraging to know that there is room for mess in our lives. AND, that a presence of mess is not an absence of beauty, care, love, or family. (Perhaps quite the opposite actually. Have you read Ann Voskamp’s blog on this? it’s beautiful!)

Thanks so much for your beautiful honesty. Good luck cleaning!

  104. Andrea August 1, 2011 at 4:39 am #

That looks very similar to my house right now! So glad to see your state of affairs isn’t much different from mine!
