Coffee Chat Episode 12 | In Which Ryan Makes A Cameo Appearance

This week’s coffee chat episode takes you to my front porch where we chat briefly about life this week. You’ll get a quick view of our front yard (it is so pretty with the fall leaves!), a #deepthoughtsfromemily moment and a surprise cameo from Ryan. Even I was surprised. It’s the best.

Enjoy!

MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO

Sneak Peek of the Thanksgiving table post coming next week! It turned out to be so beautiful. I can’t wait to share.

Last night’s holiday entertaining event at Room and Board was such fun. Here’s a shot of the room I did.

So, of course this is a fantastic coffee chat for all the reasons everyone already listed (encouraging words, funny/sweet moment with Ryan, great sweater, etc.) but is no one else wondering how she did her hair?!! :) Maybe you’ve already posted a tutorial on that hairstyle before, but it’s super-cute!!

    • emily November 7, 2016 at 11:52 am #

Ah, thanks :) It is what I do when my hair is a disaster. I’ll see if I can do a tutorial.

Hi Emily! I have followed your blog since before Audrey was born and this is my first time commenting! Your message spoke to me so much that I was sobbing half-way through! I, too have 4 and as they are getting older (only 1 left at home) I have been struggling with finding my own “voice.” I know that first and foremost I am called to be a wife and mama but there is something else in me that I feel the need to somehow get out and share with others! Been praying alot about that lately!

Anyway-just wanted you to know that you are an inspiration to me (and the only blog I still read faithfully) and to keep up the great work! God has truly given you a gift!

    Sincerely, Katie from Kansas

This was probably my favorite coffee chat so far! I love how you are a such a well-rounded lady – wife, mom, talented artist, sweet friend. I have followed your blog for about eight years. You have such a great ‘attitude of gratitude’ and praise the Lord for how He blesses you!

Thank you for sharing your life, talents, and family with us!

    Soli Deo Gloria!

    -Kyrie

P.S. Love the surprise visit from your husband – y’all are darling :) !

    Hey Emily,

I met you at the Room & Board event. I thought you were fabulous and your room was fabulous.

Your voice represents a lot of us out there, so thank you!!

I know its hard to put yourself out there. I’m learning from that whole experience just launching my own interiors business at the ripe old age of 41!!

Keep doing what your doing. You are heard!!

    Cheers,

    Libby

    Emily,
Thank you so much for that coffee chat! You are such an encouragement to me through your blog and these fun video chats. I’m a stay-at-home mom with big dreams but very limited outlets due to time and budgetary constrains, so I often feel like I have nothing to contribute to the world.

I’ve been attending a Beth Moore Bible study called “Entrusted,” and one of the main things God is telling me through it is almost exactly what you just said. God has called us to share the Gospel and given each of us our own gift through which to share it. We just have to take the step and USE that gift however we can, in the season of life we’re in.

Motherhood is such a busy time of life, and I think we all have a tendency to lose track of our own talents and voice in the craziness of helping our children find theirs. So THANK YOU for the little reminder this morning.

I love your beautiful trees and fall colors! I wish I could come over and play in your leaves : )

  6. Ashley November 2, 2016 at 11:02 pm #

So well said, Emily! Thank you :) I need this reminder often.

  7. RubberChickenGirl November 2, 2016 at 5:19 pm #

Thanks for the timely pep talk.

    Oh Emily,
I arrived a “little” late…SO loved your chat, AsI listened to the sound of the rain, in the burbs of Seattle, enjoying morning coffee while watching, I thought, “WOW we’re neighbors”!! Who knew🤗

  9. Tina October 31, 2016 at 7:56 am #

Emily, You are amazing–so inspiring and empowering for me, personally. Your simple message here inspired me to hit “Publish” on my new blog. I hope I can, in turn, be an inspiration to those out there that don’t think their “voice” may be significant or important enough to put themselves out there like you do. Just know you are so appreciated for your candor and kindness. Thank you.

    • emily October 31, 2016 at 9:15 am #

That is amazing! I’m so proud of you for just stepping out and doing it!

  10. Alissa October 30, 2016 at 8:48 pm #

Thanks for sharing your voice!! Your blog has always been one of my favorites and has resonated with me as a fellow mom of lots of kids. :)
Also, congrats on your new home!! The yard is just beautiful and I can’t wait to see what you guys do to make it yours!

  11. Rach C October 30, 2016 at 4:33 pm #

Another great coffee chat! Thanks Emily. It’s great that you had the opportunity to do some styling in a public arena. The other women may seem better, may have more time, may have a bigger business and you may feel like ‘what have I got to offer’, however as the saying goes ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’. God may have placed you there at that time because it put you on the radar of women who need you. Maybe not directly, but through your blog. I don’t know who these other designers are or how they run their business. You ‘connect’ with people and in this world of busyness, that’s what some people crave, even if it’s just watching a coffee chat. Don’t underestimate your ‘real-ness’. People don’t want to connect with someone they can’t relate to, they want to connect with someone they can. This is something you do very well. Not only are you talented in what you do, but you do it with heart and good character. I love your blog and coffee chats and always look forward to your email in my inbox.

    Awesome!!
It’s cool to see you surprised by your husband! I love these little moments of life or hello can make us blush, and yet more love life !!
It’s so good! We must enjoy it and remember to again and again!
The garden is really very beautiful and I look forward to enjoy it via the blog with you! Even from a distance I live in France, I am delighted to see your new home and the new garden! Fall is one of my favorite seasons, probably m favorite season, and with the colors of autumn, I am! Nature is so beautiful and your garden and just like the one I’d like autumn! Beautiful day or night, I do not know when you read this message … and rest well. Oh I forgot Happy Halloween !!

I adore your real life and your smile when you caught Ryan peeking out the door was so beautiful! Your words really resonate with me today. We do all have a voice and it is so important. I appreciate your openness and genuine way of saring your life that I relate to so well.

  15. AmyGThatsMe October 29, 2016 at 6:12 am #

Oh how God speaks through us all. I’ve been struggling as a busy mom who just moved home’s, also. I’ve felt particularly overwhelmed and I’ve said to my husband, “Lately I just feel feel like there’s no room for me.”
And so you spoke, And it pierced my heart.

Thank you for sharing your pep talk, Emily. I have a feeling I’ll be replaying it (but just a few times, not in a creepy way!)

Happy Weekend! Love on those kiddos and keep sharing your heart and talents. . . its clearly part of His plan! ❤️

    • emily October 31, 2016 at 9:18 am #

I’m so glad I shared. The message is so good and true and I need to keep reminding myself of it, too!

  16. Angela QV October 29, 2016 at 6:10 am #

Well! You can see from all our responses that what God said to you about having a voice totally resonated with lots of us, too! Isn’t that like Him?! I have a little picture on my mantlepiece that a friend gave me recently, as an encouragement, and it says……. “You have a voice”. There have been some times recently when it seems like my voice isn’t valued and has been taken away, but you gave me the reminder that I have a legitimate voice and that, when it seems like other people don’t believe in me, God believes in me.
    Lots of love xx

  17. Elizabeth October 28, 2016 at 8:31 pm #

Love anytime you incorporate God into your posts/video chat. It’s helps reel it all in to us decorating-family-loving people. We all struggle with acceptance in some form and your message today was perfect. You have a voice….for something… but you have a voice. Thanks!

  18. Carolyn October 28, 2016 at 8:09 pm #

I love that you share your voice, and I also love that you have moments of self-doubt–quickly followed by a sense of peace. It makes my moments of self-doubt feel all that more normal. :)

By the way, have you ever thought about doing “what I wore” posts again? I think that’s how I originally found you years ago. Love your style.

    • emily October 31, 2016 at 9:18 am #

Yes! A Fall Fashion post is coming! Hopefully this week :) If not, check back next monday.

  19. Vanessa October 28, 2016 at 7:47 pm #

Yes, girl! You spoke to my heart with this one (and so many others!). Thank you for being real and saying you are not “trained” in this, but you have a voice and talent for it! That is so relevant to me (and probably most of your readers). God bless, lady. Love following along.

  20. Selina October 28, 2016 at 6:57 pm #

I’m really enjoying your coffee chats! I started following you after moving from WA to FL and now it’s even more fun since you are in my hometown! Thank you for sharing your style and being genuine and creative and helping me feel a little closer to home since I am super homesick this time of year!!

  21. Amy Reber October 28, 2016 at 6:43 pm #

    Hi Emily,
This was the first time I have listened to a coffee chat :) What caught my eye recently was that you recently moved to Gig Harbor. We moved to the Kitsap Peninsula in July (I was born and raised in WA state), but have never lived on the Peninsula. We are currently having a house built in Kingston. ANYWAY, I am a freelance textile and surface designer and my dream is to design for home décor. I would love to get together sometime, don’t know anyone out on the peninsula at this point ha! :) In the meantime, feel free to check out my website and FB page…. http://www.amyreber.com and http://www.facebook.com/amyreberdesigns

    Take care,
    Amy

  22. MINA MILEY October 28, 2016 at 6:22 pm #

    Love.
    All of this.
If I may say, really LOVE that stone wall behind you….reminiscent of one I saw often in my Grandparent’s yard :)

Thank you for your transparency. Ryan, scooters on the porch and all….. <3

  23. Kelli October 28, 2016 at 5:48 pm #

Thank you for sharing your inspirations. It would be so easy to skip over it but I love that you talk about the things God puts on your heart. That is a big reason why, as a fellow Christian, I love reading your work. Thank you.

    • emily October 31, 2016 at 9:19 am #

      Thanks Kelli :)

Hey Emily! I always look forward to your chats, they’re so much fun! I’m so glad I found your blog and love your style. You face was priceless when you saw Ryan…it was so sweet to see.

Can’t wait to see how the house comes along and Happy Halloween to you and your family!!

  25. angela October 28, 2016 at 5:37 pm #

thank you for speaking what God laid on your heart. it hit me square on, as i feel like God is giving me a voice in a certain area & i am afraid of sharing……thank you so much for using your voice to encourage others.

  26. AshMasterFlash October 28, 2016 at 4:14 pm #

I never knew how to style a sweater like that, so thank you! And we want Ryan! #coupleschat 😊

    • AshMasterFlash October 28, 2016 at 4:16 pm #

Funny, I typed *more* Ryan and that’s what came up. Hilarious. Have an awesome weekend!

    • emily October 31, 2016 at 9:20 am #

We want Ryan. I love it. We tried to do a coffee chat together on our road trip and it was a disaster. Perhaps we will try again :)

  27. Bethany H October 28, 2016 at 3:19 pm #

Another Bethany (ha! That threw me a bit)…. anyways, I wanted to say that I am turning 50 in one week exactly and I have been trained in design and art, yet I am still taking classes and learning from others of all ages and backgrounds! I don’t think you ever get to a point where you know it all! And if you do, well, you probably aren’t really being honest with yourself. I love what you shared. And I also love how cute you and your husband are! :) I am going away for my b-day weekend… if I sign up for the class will I be behind if I am not around at the beginning?

    • emily October 31, 2016 at 9:21 am #

The class is go at your own pace – so just log in when you are ready and the lessons will all be there for you.

  28. Holly-Kate October 28, 2016 at 2:53 pm #

  30. Lauren@SimplyLKJ October 28, 2016 at 2:04 pm #

Thank you Emily. I think I echo what many have said in that your words came at just the right time. You are so right. We all have a voice and a purpose, and something to offer.

  31. Linda October 28, 2016 at 1:33 pm #

Needed the ephinany shared….. believe God does encourage us that way :)

  32. sally October 28, 2016 at 1:28 pm #

Just want you to know I have been reading your blog for almost a year. Enjoy your encouraging word today about a voice which God has given each of us. Your confidence and wisdom is inspiring. Keep up the good work.

  33. Kara October 28, 2016 at 1:10 pm #

Sharing our words and passions to the glory of God… it’s what we were created for. Good thoughts. Have a great weekend Emily!

  36. Elaina October 28, 2016 at 12:48 pm #

    Emily,
Your words spoke to me so deeply today as I struggle to try something new and not be intimidated by others. We are all unique and I love the reminder of that. Thank you!

    • emily October 28, 2016 at 1:16 pm #

      So glad it was encouraging!

  37. Jan October 28, 2016 at 12:44 pm #

I loved your thoughts as well. I’ve always loved to decorate and I’m been kinda a family and friend go-to for home decor advise for a few years and I was asked by my sister recently to helps design and decorate her home for a big home show in our local area. It was a daunting task, but step by step we made it happen.

Since then, I’ve been helping a few other non-family, non-friend clients and I find myself doubting my instincts more and wondering if I’m actually qualified to do what I doing. I have my interior design degree (I have a friend with one and she actually comes to me to reassure and help guide her at times) nor did I imagine this to be a future career for me. I also have 4 kids (3 boys, 1 girtl) with one more on the way and don’t know if I plan to make this bigger someday, but the idea that I have a voice and that though I may not be a innovative, or a bonafide “style-maker”, there is place for me and my ideas.

I love following you and your blog. I love your posts about family, faith, and design. All of it!

    • Jo October 30, 2016 at 3:46 pm #

I have five kids too. I think it is so obvious when someone loves to do what they are doing because they do it well. When it stops being fun/enjoyable then to me it’s a sign to be done with something in my life. Keep on doing what you love to do when you can do it. There will come a day not too far off when our kids are grown and gone and this could become more for you. Or even before that if God presents the opportunity for it.

  38. LeAnne Martin October 28, 2016 at 12:40 pm #

Thank you, thank you for the pep talk, Emily! I needed that. I’m a fairly new blogger and I wonder sometimes if there’s space for me out there. I know there is–I feel that the Lord is in this–but still, it’s nice to be reminded that I have a voice too.

I so enjoy your blog and seeing your space. What a big year you’ve had, huh?

    Best,
    LeAnne

    You guys are too cute!!

  40. Socorro Larkin October 28, 2016 at 12:09 pm #

    Thank you for the #fridaythoughtsfromemily
I didn’t realize I needed to hear that but it really resonated with me…I have a voice and although it’s different than someone else’s it still matters and it should be shared. You are awesome and I’m glad to know you and your blog!

    • emily October 28, 2016 at 1:28 pm #

      Thank you Socorro!

  41. Katie October 28, 2016 at 12:07 pm #

Hi! I love your coffee chats, I always look forward to them. Any chance you’ll share where you found the sweater you wore during this one? So cute!

    • emily October 28, 2016 at 1:20 pm #

Thank you! My sweater is from Banana Republic (maybe the factory store?) a few years ago. It is actually a cape and I love it :)

      • Katie October 28, 2016 at 1:25 pm #

Oh ok, darn! Was hoping it was something new;)…sorry for the double post, my iPad was acting funny and I didn’t think it worked.

    • emily October 28, 2016 at 1:29 pm #

Sure! It is from Banana Republic (I think from the outlet store) a few years ago. So that’s not helpful at all :)

  42. Krystal Wight Armstrong October 28, 2016 at 12:06 pm #

I just love how cute you were about your Husband interrupting your video. Totally looked like you still have a teen crush on him, blushing & all, it was awesome. Happy married people that still get giddy about seeing eachother walk in the room is the best. Thanks for sharing that and not cutting it out in editing! Yay for ‘young love’ forever! ;D

  43. Bethany October 28, 2016 at 12:06 pm #

I love this. I get so intimidated sometimes with having a blog and a small decorating business. But you’re so right, everyone has a voice, everyone has something to offer. I know its true but its good to hear sometimes!
Also, unrelated but I LOVE seeing your new porch and the beautiful leaves!!!! I know everyone’s saying this but I can’t wait to see more and how you are decorating the inside!!

    • emily October 28, 2016 at 1:30 pm #

      Thank you, Bethany!

And yes, I can’t wait to start decorating the inside! It is a total mess right now and so we’re slowing figuring out where to put things and what projects to tackle first. I’ll keep you updated!

  44. Katie October 28, 2016 at 11:40 am #

I love your sweater in this chat! And I love your chats too, I always look forward to them;)…will you share where you found your sweater?
