Coffee Chat Episode 14

Welcome to the first Coffee Chat of the new year!

The purpose behind a Coffee Chats is to pretend like we’re old friends chatting and sharing coffee. These are the types of things we might discuss.

If you’re new to these videos, know this: I literally write a few notes about topics, press record on the camera and start talking. I do it in one take and even if I say lots of ums or forget the name of a show … I carry on. It feels natural and genuine, which is totally what I am going for with these.

Also know that I love getting your questions and suggestions for things you want to chat about in upcoming episodes. Let me know if you have anything to talk about in the comments.

Okay, let’s get right to it!

(The sound is not great. I’m very sorry about that)

  • We have a new house! See it HERE.
  • The latest HOUSE TOUR.
  • The garage all set up as a studio! We’re in the middle of a fun project with Ryan’s mom. I’ll tell you more about it soon!

  • My favorite Christmas gift: THIS ELECTRIC BLANKET
  • Have you watched THE CROWN yet? It’s so good. Very historical fiction about the life of Queen Elizabeth.
  • Michael Pollan’s documentary series COOKED was super interesting.
  • THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW is so darling and makes me wish I could bake all day long.
  • The kids’ PLAYROOM IS IN A MAGAZINE! I Did It! by Better Homes + Gardens is on sale now. Here are some closeups of when the original article ran.

  • Are you still looking for a 2017 planner? I just picked up THIS AGENDA by Sugar Paper and think it is great. I also use their month-by-month calendar but I’m not finding that one online.

  • Just call my Crazy Auntie Emily. I have a BELOVED PENCIL and I’m slightly protective.
  • Have you claimed you free Mrs. Meyer’s dish soap, hand soap, lotion, set of sponges and carrying caddy yet? If not, you can still get the free gift when you sign up for Grove Collective before January 8th. DETAILS HERE.

  • Curious … how do you feel about sponges? Helpful or super gross?
  • Just because maybe someone will ask, the shirt I’m wearing is THIS ONE from Loft. And, hey! It’s on sale!

Happy Friday, everyone! Hope you enjoyed our chat today. If there is anything you’d like to talk about in an upcoming episode, let me know in the comments below.

It’s working now on a different device!

That was great! I would love for you to talk about how you put together outfits and fashion. Love your little bouquet of pink flowers too. So cute.

You are adorable. But REALLY hope you can fix the sound in the future. Bless you!

Happy New Year! Love coffee chats! I received my Grove order and it’s amazing!! I’m looking forward to another year of your blog and wish you God’s blessings for you and your family in 2017.

I’m not a big fan of sponges, but I did discover William Sonoma makes a great (yellow) sponge. I use it in my kitchen. PS. Love the coffee chats!

Really enjoyed your coffee chat today. You covered so much ground! Looking forward to viewing your TV suggestions. I love that you watched Moana, a movie about the myths and legends of my country – New Zealand. I’ve claimed the Grove freebies too, it will cost a small fortune and several weeks to get them to NZ, but looking forward to trying these environmentally friendly products.

I enjoy watching your chats, thanks for doing them! I just had to say, I LOVED The Crown! I thought after Downton Abbey I would not find anything I liked as much, but I was wrong. I’m looking forward to season 2!

  8. Patsy January 7, 2017 at 9:32 am #

I enjoy your coffee chats so much. I feel it is just you and I at the table. Wishing you and your family many blessings in the New Year….

Ok, I could only halfway concentrate on what you were saying… I I just kept admiring that adorable shirt!! I have tried a few of that style, but none have been as cute as yours. May I ask where you purchased it?
Love your coffee chats and am anxiously waiting to see all these updates on your new home!

My comments are rambly so I numbered :) 1. Can’t wait to see your couch!!! 2. YAS, the Crown, finished it in like a week and I loved it. 3. Congrats on the feature in BHG! So cute :) 4. My mom got an electric blanket and now turns it on for a while and then when she’s about to get in, turns it off because of this: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/02/24/is-your-electric-blanket-safe.aspx
(not trying to be a downer, just wasn’t sure if you were aware!) 5. I’m a middle road sponge person and I throw it in the dishwasher whenever possible. You did ask ;)

Hi Emily! OK, so as I sit in a sea of Christmas decorations – which I am still gathering so I can reconfigure my totes (Tetris-style) to store away til next season, I would love to hear about how you/others store this stuff? It’s like an unspoken art, right? And what do you do with the non-holiday decor during the season while everything is silver/gold or red/green? Just my current wonderings. ? Miss your coffee chats! Happy New Year!

  12. Chelsea Rotunno January 6, 2017 at 3:24 pm #

Hi! Cute video chat as always! The thing about sponges–I have no problem with sponges. But I prefer a dish brush because I have caught my mom, husband, house cleaner, neighbor, friend–anyone at my house–using the dish sponge on things other than dishes. Like to wipe the floor. Or the bathroom counter. To me the “unknown” is the worst part about the sponge. So no, I can’t do it. I keep them on hand, but I never use them on dishes! ❤️

  13. Julie January 6, 2017 at 2:55 pm #

I love historical fiction too and am wondering if you have some book recommends?!? :)

  14. jen January 6, 2017 at 2:50 pm #

Why aren’t you using Paperworks for your calendar needs???

    • emily January 7, 2017 at 12:12 am #

I use the weekly calendars, note page, shopping lists and note cards all the time. For some reason, I like having a calendar in a book so I can flip from page to page and look back at what I did/didn’t do.

  15. Ericia January 6, 2017 at 2:03 pm #

Such a fun coffee chat, Emily! I love The Crown and The British Baking Show! I also happened to have my Sugar Paper planner sitting beside me when I watched this chat and folded laundry! :) Happy New Year!

  16. Grace January 6, 2017 at 1:54 pm #

I’m in the same boat with your friend who thinks sponges are yucky but will make myself try them when my Grove Collective items come in! Great idea to run them through the dishwasher occasionally. I already do that with my bath “pouf” in the washing machine so why not a sponge in the dishwasher!

  17. Rachael Anne Allison January 6, 2017 at 1:45 pm #

I love that you have HEB tea in your mug! :) Texas Forever :)

    • Darian January 7, 2017 at 8:48 pm #

I noticed the same thing! Agree-Texas forever from Austin! :-)

And…loved The Crown and ordered the Grove Cleaning package….

      Happy New Year!

  18. Laura January 6, 2017 at 1:33 pm #

I love historical fiction as well, and my husband and I just finished the Crown on Netflix. Loved it! I tried Grove for a month or two, but realized I didn’t need items as often as they wanted to send them to me. I feel like Costco wins on all accounts for paper products in bulk – like toilet paper! (we have five kids). But Grove does have amazing customer service. Love all your product reviews and that they are affordable items for the everyday person!

  19. Tara D. January 6, 2017 at 1:32 pm #

YAY! You are back! Missed your coffee chats. What color is the red on your nails it’s lovely. Look forward to seeing your progress in your new home.

Happy new year…love everything you create, and congrats on your new house and for being published in Better Homes & Gardens!

  21. Ginny Mapes January 6, 2017 at 12:59 pm #

Love the talks — sound is terrible, parts were not understandable??

I do love your products, ordered the Meyers special. I also loved the hat you were wearing while doing dishes — trying to keep warm?

Stay cozy — speak slowly, add a blanket or something to soften echo.
This is National Cuddle-Up day — so relax and cuddle up!

  22. Laura French January 6, 2017 at 12:56 pm #

As to your question about sponges. I buy the blue sponges that come 12 to a package and we cut them in half to make two small rectangles. That way I can throw them away every week without feeling wasteful. The package lasts 24 weeks or about 6 weeks and you prevent the whole issue of stinky sponges.
    Hope that helps.

    • Laura French January 6, 2017 at 12:57 pm #

I meant to say the package lasts about 6 months…..ooops.

  23. Kelly Hicks January 6, 2017 at 12:50 pm #

You mentioned you got a new couch!? Would love to know about it!

  24. Amy Barnhart January 6, 2017 at 12:50 pm #

Yes! Got my Grove special! I can’t wait to clean with Mrs. Meyers again – something about those smells makes me WANT to clean!

Good Morning Emily:) Currently you are my favorite Blog! I am painting my living room/library Ancestral by Behr per your recommendation and so far I am loving it! At first I couldn’t see the blue/green undertones in it, when I put items that have blue or green near it, I can really see these lovely hues! I second Christian on wanting to know how you get those great waves in your hair. I am really liking the Netflix movie recommendations as I absolutely hate surfing Netflix only to find something terrible to watch. I too love the Crown or anything that has to do with cooking or historical fiction. I really am missing my Sunday nights watching Downton Abby:( Anyway, as you can tell I love to ramble too haha! Looking forward to a video of you living room remodel..hint hint:) If you love reading historical fiction, Philippa Gregory is my most favorite. I got hooked when I read this trilogy, Wideacre, The Favored Child and Meridon. Have a great day!

    • emily January 6, 2017 at 11:50 am #

Thanks for chatting! I will look up Philippa Gregory – thanks for the recommendation.

    • Anna January 6, 2017 at 3:52 pm #

If you enjoy historical fiction, check out Medici Masters of Florence on Netflix. We watched that after The Crown and it was a hit!

  26. Brandy January 6, 2017 at 11:09 am #

I was wondering more about your comfy couch:) I am updating my family room and am looking for a comfy couch maybe even a sectional…..
    Always love your style:)

    • emily January 6, 2017 at 11:52 am #

It is quite amazing. I will post about our sectional search soon!

  27. Sara January 6, 2017 at 10:05 am #

I always love these coffee chats. Looking forward to more. Thanks for doing them. Sponges are only a little gross in the kitchen (I, too, run them through dishwasher) but I’m totally grossed out by bath sponges.

    • emily January 6, 2017 at 11:51 am #

I agree. And those fluff things you put body wash on feels like they are just germ-ridden.

  28. Christian January 6, 2017 at 7:38 am #

Morning! Can we talk about your amazing hair?!?!? Would love to know how you get your waves to look like that… :)

    • emily January 6, 2017 at 12:06 pm #

Ah, you’re sweet. I did a post a while back about how to use a wand to curl my hair. You can see it here.
