Coffee Chat episode 26 | perfume, making friends and how a blog makes money

Hey friends … it’s time for another coffee chat. This time we did it live again (thanks to all who were there!) and talked about all categories of things: books, perfume, blogging and more.

Grab a cup of coffee and let’s chat!

MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO

  • I deleted the MOMENT app. It is a great tool for monitoring phone use, but it started stressing me out.
  • Instead, I took Emily P. Freeman’s advice on HER BRILLIANT PODCAST (episode 20) and removed notifications from my phone.
  • I just finished reading CALLING ME HOME by Julie Kibler. Loved it.
  • It’s time to move on from my 8th-grade perfume. Although I still contend that GAP HEAVEN does smell good. It is no longer available at the Gap, but you can find it on ebay if you’re dying to try.
  • This candle is my favorite scent: TOCCA FLORENCE
  • I accidentally ordered the wrong scent and ended up with TOCCA BIANCA perfume which actually does smell nice. A little muskier than I prefer, so I’ll order the TOCCA FLORENCE PERFUME (Anthropologie sells a small TRAVEL SIZE that I’ll order first just to make sure I love it as much as the candle.
  • My favorite book of 2017 was DELICIOUS by Ruth Reichl.
  • This is my new DETACHABLE WALLET PHONE CASE. Just try not to lose the wallet part like I do daily :)
  • Do you use a GPS app? If not, give WAZE a try. It’s our go-to.
  • My friend JAMIE IVEY wrote a book and is coming to Seattle! I’ll be there and would love to see you. DETAILS ABOUT THE BOOK LAUNCH PARTY HERE.

The Q+A portion of the video begins at 14 minutes.

Thanks again for all of those who joined me live. I’ll do this every Tuesday at 11am pst and then post the videos here on Wednesdays. If you’d like to get an invite to join the live coffee chat, please join my email list RIGHT HERE.

l just switched my fragrance a few weeks ago too and bought hand cream to make sure I like it before taking the perfume plunge and guess what I bought……Tocca Bianca! I love it. I’ll buy yours from you, if you decide you don’t like it.

PS Oops…..that’s what I would say to my friends. But I feel like you’re my friend because of coffee chat!

Found your Blog when I read about your family road trip in Magnolia Journal. I absolutely adore it! Emily you are such a sweet, genuine, woman. It’s really is apparent thru your writing! I appreciate that you mix in, faith, home decor, kids (tho I’m an empty nester), food, books, travel…. all the same things I really love! Keep up the great work on your business and blog site.

OK hilarious about your mom wondering why her girls can’t clean their houses ;) I read a parenting book called All Joy and No Fun and she shares the stats that 1) housewives in the 50s I think reported spending like 30 hours a week cleaning their house! And 2) the term for women at home has also completely changed from “housewife” to “stay at home mom,” which shows our values and expectations have changed. And yes … I don’t have ANY notifications for anything at all on my phone and I don’t even carry it around with me … so nice.

Emily – I got Delicious out of the library and now I can hardly get anything done around the house! I can’t put it down. Loving it. Thanks for sharing about it. I was wondering if you read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It is WW2 based historical fiction and it was so good I reread it immediately. I know have a trip to Guernsey on my wish list. :-)

I’m so glad you’re liking it! I did read the Guernsey Literary book and loved that one too! Such a sweet story with endearing characters.

hi emily- so fun- YOU are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing. Did you recover your office chair? The right side looked like a black and white buffalo check fabric? Curious… wanting to attempt that to an older pattern on a pottery barn office chair of mine. Love an insight or advise.

    • emily January 30, 2018 at 5:52 pm #

Thank you! The chair is leather and just has a throw over it :)

Nest has some good fragrances. If you don’t wear fragrance a lot, maybe just but the small roller balls. I have the scents indigo & black tulip. I love indigo.

Love love our housekeeper! She comes every other week and it’s heaven! Totally worth every penny!
Perfume: Marc Jacob’s Daisy is my go to perfume. It’s fresh and light.

We have Disney’s Circle to manage our phone usage. I have time limits set for me and my family. I love it and it filters all the yuck from the internet. I also have all notifications off and try to not have my phone in my pocket but time limits have really helped. 😊

Oh, oh! That was me with the house cleaner question. 😊

What’s all the clicking or popping?!?! Am I the only one hearing it? I’m so ADHD, it’s distracting.

    • emily January 25, 2018 at 8:02 pm #

Ugh! I’m so sorry about that! I’m not really sure about the reason for it but I will do my best to make sure it doesn’t happen again! It is annoying!

I just ordered ibooks for the past few years. It was super easy and I just put all the pics from one year in each album. The quality was great too.

Yes I don’t work but have a houseckeaner come in to do dust and do the floors every couple of weeks. I can clean the bathrooms and kitchen around the day she is scheduled to clean. When she leaves then everything is clean and I am not exhausted!

I hopped down here to comment – based on what you described you will love the “Grace” line by Philosophy. Then I saw two others had commented to try “Amazing Grace”.
    1. There are other “Graces” as well.
    2. Juliette Has a Gun, Title “Not a Perfume”.
    3. The whole “Replica” line! They title their perfumes with things like “Beach Walk” and “Fireplace” and “Jazz Club”. They are a bit pricey for an everyday perfume line – runs over a hundred dollars a bottle, but they hit the “everyday subtle yet grownup” right on the nose.
    “Big girl” suggestions:
    4. The Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium is the perfect scent for maybe a date night with your husband or when you want to feel sophisticated. Did not expect to like it and it’s now a life long staple!
    5. Commodity Gold. It smells like going to an evening soiree at a beautiful cape cod beach house in a white linen dress, waves crashing in the distance against twinkling lights (IMO). How does it manage to smell like that? That I cannot answer!

I will also suggest getting little samples for free from Sephora. They are happy to give you little testers of three or four scents. Everything smells SO different when it’s settled a little than it does on those little paper sticks. Good luck :)

How about a much healthier option for a nice smelling home, essential oils in a defused.
Mine is running just about all day while giving my immune system a boost.

Thanks Emily for sharing the chat since I usually can’t watch them live. You mentioned when you were talking about your phone case, that you can attach your phone to a magnet device in your car. Will you please share more information about this device that you have in your car? Thanks!

Wait… Gap is discontinuing Heaven perfume??? I’ve been wearing that forever too. :(

  16. Beth January 24, 2018 at 3:07 pm #

I work full time & I have a house cleaner that comes every couple of weeks. I had a really great gal – she was so fast that she got everything done in about 2 hours. Then she got a real job & quit on me, but she sent her friend in her place. The friend is nice but she is sooooooooooooooo slow, she takes 5 hours to get things done in the time it took the first cleaner 2.
So, I am on the lookout for someone new & faster.
    Sigh.

  17. Trudy January 24, 2018 at 3:00 pm #

Someone to help with the house is a blessing worth every penny. My husband thought it was an unnecessary expense but he really liked a clean, organized house. And a clean house that wasn’t just for company.

I wear Clinique Happy. It’s light and doesn’t seem to bother other people. Also, Aveda stored will make you a scent using their oils. Very clean smelling

  18. Christine January 24, 2018 at 2:59 pm #

My coffee chat froze about halfway through!
Clinique Happy Heart… perfume (must be Happy HEART, not regular Happy!)

  19. Andrea January 24, 2018 at 12:51 pm #

I have had a house cleaner occassionally, (especially after my third baby within 3.5 years!) Now she comes 1x/month. My kids love her and give her hugs. It’s worth it.

My question, do you tip your housecleaner? Or give seasonal gifts? I don’t know the etiquette for this!

  20. jaye h. January 24, 2018 at 12:47 pm #

Emily, Tocca Bianca is the only fragrance I wear. I’ve had samples of Tocca Florence, Cleopatra, Stella (yum) and Lilianna (sp?) and can’t say I’ve found a “bad” one in the bunch. There is an underlying softness and sophistication (not a scent) present in all Tocca fragrances which I find quite appealing. Most important to me is the distinct lack of an “alcohol after-smell” which I detect in almost all designer and classic fragrances. I hope you enjoy the FLORENCE perfume as much as you enjoy your candle, I’m willing to be you will love it!

    Re: Hiring a housekeeper when you’re a stay-at-home mom:

Heck yes! I work part-time and have a 5 month old and if I had the means to do so, I would certainly hire some help because the dust bunnies are accumulating!

  22. ginger January 24, 2018 at 12:34 pm #

will you be having another blog class?

  23. Lindsy January 24, 2018 at 12:27 pm #

I would LOVE a house-cleaner! If home is your domain and you and your husband agree (& can afford it), why not hire someone? You’re still seeing to it being done. And then you have more time to put towards something else (like a romantic date night plan? Win-win)

  24. Kathryn Peters January 24, 2018 at 12:00 pm #

Amazing Grace perfume, been wearing it before I had my daughter Grace!

    • Candice Hope January 24, 2018 at 2:32 pm #

Yep Amazing Grace by philosphy! Fresh Clean smell.

  25. Taylor January 24, 2018 at 11:37 am #

Definitely remove al phone notifications. I also keep it on silent all day long (which might not work if you have kids in school and a business to run). I also keep my phone in one spot in the house and walk to it to text vs carrying aroung with me all day. Good grief, the things we have to do! ;)

  26. Krista January 24, 2018 at 11:16 am #

Oh! FYI – Chatbooks actually now pulls from Insta, Facebook, AND your photo library now. And they have hardcover options now. Plus you can put it on auto-print.

  27. Krista January 24, 2018 at 11:08 am #

I LOOOOVE Tocca Bianca! I have a few different scents that I swap around. I also love Le Labo Rose 31. I typically hate rose-scented anything, but Le Labo is just fantastic. They also offer small samples so you can check out different scents. I just ordered Santal and Another to check them out. https://www.lelabofragrances.com/fine-fragrance.html I also love Burbury London perfume.

  28. Missy G. January 24, 2018 at 10:55 am #

Am I the only one hearing all this popping, clicking, squeaking noise?

    • Sara January 24, 2018 at 12:23 pm #

No, I heard it too…distracting. Wonder what it is?

    • Amy Barnhart January 24, 2018 at 12:35 pm #

I hear it to. Did you find a fix?

    • Joli January 24, 2018 at 8:44 pm #

      Heard them!

    • Robin January 25, 2018 at 7:40 am #

So distracting! Couldn’t listen to the entire thing.
