Coffee Chat (video edition!)

How about a little something different for this version of coffee chat …

Mentioned in the video:

smorescake My mom/grandma’s butter crunch cake recipe:

butter crunch cake recipe / jones design company

Note: it is a small rectangular layered cake and will not look like the top photo. But it will taste 100x more delicious.

The Kevin who is mentioned at the bottom is my uncle who had ALS and this was a cookbook friends and family made as a fund raiser. Just FYI.

Hope you enjoyed the chat! xo.

      Thanks Summer!

  13. Penelope February 8, 2016 at 11:37 am #

You might like the Kate Atchison book, Life after Life.
It’s set in England in the WWI and WWII era.

  14. Ginger February 7, 2016 at 9:39 pm #

Loved the video, I was interested in your new class, but I have the worst handwriting. It is so bad that I barely write thank you notes b/c it looks like my kids wrote it. Do you think that this could actually help. I think part of the problem is that I do not take the time to write neat. Always love reading your blog!

    • emily February 8, 2016 at 2:16 pm #

I hope it does help! That’s the whole point of the class – to help teach techniques that will not change your writing into mine, but make yours better. It is part of you – your personal signature – and is worth improving so that it can be preserved in handwritten notes. Sounds fancy, but I really do believe it!

  15. LindaR February 7, 2016 at 5:56 pm #

Nice to “meet” you! Loved this! Short, sweet & informative…..more, please!

What a great little video! We have similar taste but I did copy the stag…”she” is above my piano wearing a big fluffy white scarf. I named her Olive…lol. Wish I could send a pic – so cute! I also bought a bunch of your new prints – just love the simplicity of them.

  38. gloria February 5, 2016 at 7:09 pm #

Emily, loved your video Coffee Chat. Loved also that if I was curious about one of the items in your video, I could immediately click on one of your links and still hear your video.

  39. Pink Camellias February 5, 2016 at 7:01 pm #

I think the coffee chat is a great idea – I enjoyed watching it Thank you for introducing Dear Mushka – everything she has is so cute. I like the initial tags – those would be cute on a necklace – I love the bangles with the bracelets, too. Do you remember the SNL skit w/ Mike Myers, Coffee Tawk? I loved that. I’m feeling verklempt!

  40. Amanda L February 5, 2016 at 5:58 pm #

Such a great set up and YES would love to watch another one—it’s a very personal way to watch a blog. I was able to multitask and fold some laundry while watching. Sometimes with lengthy written blogs (not yours, just in general) I have to either skip or just skim the first few paragraphs just for time’s sake.
    Happy Weekend!

  41. Dawn Kitley February 5, 2016 at 5:33 pm #

I love this! Can we ACTUALLY have coffee together? :) I’m just down in Olympia. I’d take you to a new and fun coffee shop. I love hearing people voices and seeing how they act in real life, this was fun!

  42. Socorro February 5, 2016 at 5:28 pm #

Loved the coffee chat! You’re just as cute and precious as I thought…I really enjoy everything you blog about and I love that you’re local to my area! Super refreshing, keep up the great work!

  45. Stephanie February 5, 2016 at 3:57 pm #

I REALLY love these posts! They are my favorite posts EVER! I love the personal side of blogging and it is such an enjoyment to hear about other people in a way that could only be shared over coffee :)
Would you be able to post some sort of tutorial or something about how you film and upload these videos to your blog?
Also, just wanted to mention, everyone I know who went to America complained about their coffee. That everyone had no idea what a flat white was. That’s our signature ‘Aussie’ coffee. So glad they are now making it! Enjoy it!!!!!

    • emily February 5, 2016 at 4:35 pm #

So glad you enjoyed it :) I would love to visit Australia one day and taste a ‘real’ flat white.

And, yes, I can show how I do the videos. Maybe I’ll do a few more first :)

  46. joanne February 5, 2016 at 3:55 pm #

I love your blog…you have such great taste in fashion and home decor and I am still making your chocolate chip cookies!

Here’s a big shout out to you from Burlington, Ontario! Keep up the great posts!

  47. Shereen February 5, 2016 at 3:20 pm #

Hi Emily! I enjoyed your video coffee chat. It just made me smile because its fun to see and hear you! More personal, like your right here. My sister LOVES the Flat Whites from Starbucks. Hope you have a nice weekend.
Will try your Mom’s/Grandmother’s cake recipe too. Looks yummy!

This was so much fun Emily. I just made myself an afternoon cup of coffee and sat down to browse my email and here I find your coffee chat. How serendipitous!
My daughter read The Nightingale last weekend (yes, she’s one of “those” readers) and called me to rave and rave about what a fabulous, intriguing book it is. I’m getting it post haste.
I’m a coffee lover…I have to think for a bit about my very favorite, there are so many I love.
Nice chatting with you, have a wonderful weekend!

Emily, just wanted to let you know that as I was watching your video my daughter kept saying, “Mom, your friend is so pretty. Mom, she’s so pretty!” (And you are!!) I loved this video. What are some things to consider with lighting and sound when doing a video like this? What microphone do you have? Andy and I have been researching podcasting. The way you set this up looks great. So yes, please do more! How about every day?;) love, Chelsea

Love the video and the idea of more! It meant I could multitask and ‘read’ your post for the day while getting other things accomplished, like my daughter’s toothpaste dilemma ;). I hereby cast my vote for the video series. And adorable studio by the way. Love the alphabet background, which has now inspired me to go do on the kids’ massive school chalkboard in our hallway.

    • emily February 5, 2016 at 1:07 pm #

You’re right! Multitasking is the best and pretty much only way mamas can get things done. More video chats to come!

  72. Elizabeth February 5, 2016 at 12:30 pm #

    Hello!

I am super new to your blog, some time ago I decided to sign up for you email list. I had just sat down to drink some tea and check emails when I saw this. I loved the coffee chat! So much good little info to have, I’m excited to hear more about the lettering class!

  73. Jan P February 5, 2016 at 12:30 pm #

Sorry! It is now afternoon. My neighbor came over this morning and stayed and stayed and STAYED. Some people can’t take a hint! Anyhow I missed coffee with you and lunch with you but I will be there when you do this again. I just won’t go to the door when she knocks.
BTW – i have my coffee with sweetener and some flavor of International Delight. They named me last year’s Delight-ful Person and sent all sorts of gifts which I enjoy. Your flat white sounds good though and I may have to try it.

    • emily February 5, 2016 at 1:07 pm #

What a good neighbor you are :)

  74. Megan M. February 5, 2016 at 12:25 pm #

  89. Bonnie February 5, 2016 at 11:18 am #

This was super fun to watch while actually drinking a coffee too… Although totally not planned, just came across your email with the link while having my coffee… A latte… Although expensive upfront our espresso machine has totally paid for itself by now! ;). Please do more videos and a regular podcast would be fun too.

    • emily February 5, 2016 at 1:03 pm #

Thanks Bonnie. I agree – the initial investment of an espresso machine is worth it!

  90. Lesley February 5, 2016 at 11:05 am #

Fun change of pace, definitely different than just reading. For more about the flat white vs latte debate, here’s a good (and thorough) rundown:

Stop! Don’t start out sipping your lil latte! YOU ARE ADORABLE! I totally vote for a podcast! I have been following for so many years now. And every time we get to see your face and year you chat, its so great to see the gal behind the blog. Ive not taken the blog class, if only because I so love reading others, but lettering class, I could so use some help with that. I swear being left handed…writing on the chalkboard cute? Pretty much impossible!
Have a great weekend as well! Love the sweater:-)

  94. Natalie February 5, 2016 at 10:55 am #

Oh, you should so do a podcast! That would be so great! I binge listened to all of Jamie Ivey’s podcasts after listening to yours. Can’t wait for the handwriting class! Happy Friday!
