what {i wish} i wore

I’m feeling rather uninspired by my closet.

I’m not crazy about summer clothes and our summers are typically mild and short-lived, so buying new ones feels like a waste.

I like sweaters. And jeans. And layers. Good thing I live in Seattle, eh?

But it’s been hot here and I’ve pretty much been wearing the same tanks over and over again, so rather than bore you with uninteresting outfits, I thought I’d put together a little post I’ll call

blue linen mask

You may have noticed a couple of things.

1. Besides from that adorable swimsuit and the striped cardigan, there is no pattern and a real lack of color.

2. If I were a bit more fashionable I would know what shoe to put with each outfit and add in some accessories. I realize that is what often times ‘makes’ an outfit, and yet I very rarely put it into practice {which could have something to do with the fact I have 4 kids and wearing heels or chunky necklaces, while they look great, are not always the most practical}.

What I’m realizing is that I dress much as I decorate. I like my neutral, classic pieces. I wear a lot of blue and gray and those are the colors you see throughout our home. Little feminine details like a button or ruffle or flower make me happy. And I also struggle with the finishing touches {accessorizing, if you will} in my rooms. I can get the bulk done, but the last 10% is a big struggle. Someday I dream of having a real stylist come in and show me how its done.  Both in my dressing and my decorating. A girl can dream, right?!!

How about you? Do you dress like you decorate?

My daughter found your website and thought I might enjoy it as well and she was right!

I use to work for Ethan Allen as a design consultant and learned during that time that I also dress in the same style as I decorate my home! Makes sense! Good thing you have amazing style!

My husband told me the other day that I dress like a cute Dr. Seuss character! I collect prints, and wear them daily, my friends and family send me insane prints cause they know I love color. I want to dress like a sexy french actress from the 50’s and get Dr. Seuss!

My tiny San Francisco apartment on the other hand looks like a decorative before picture. .. I’m happy to have found your great style! God Bless you lovely to see other people say that also!

I loved this post! And I was just thinking the same thing about layers (love them) and not wanting to buy too many summer clothes for the same reasons . I’m definitely more of a Fall girl than Summer, but until now I’ve felt alone in this in the blog world.

I hope you have a great day on the West Coast! My husband was station out at Lewis years ago. Such a fun place ….

You have a beautiful family and inspiring blog!
    Blessings to you.

I LOVE that swimsuit and am in the market for a 1 piece. When I clicked on the picture it enlarged the picture, but didn’t list the source. Could you pls tell me where it’s from? Thanks!

  6. Amy August 20, 2010 at 8:53 am #

The style is elegant yet beautifully simplistic. Nothing wrong with decorating / dressing as such!

    Blessings!

I totally dress like I decorate! I realized that about a year ago. I love classic clothes with a trendy twist. That’s exactly what I’d call my decorating style. A little modern, a little traditional. That’s what I love! And accessories…I LOVE accessories when it comes to fashion or home decor. And I’m with you on summer clothes. I’m not that big into summer. Unfortunately for me, living in Louisiana, that’s kind of our only season. I do love winter and winter clothes, boots, and accessories! Great choices!!;)

  8. kelly August 19, 2010 at 5:58 pm #

i bought that striped sweater from old navy and that is very much the way i dress. my decoration unfortunately is not as cute as my clothes!

  9. Kacey August 19, 2010 at 12:27 pm #

Ooh, love them all! I even added a few to my wish list. I’ve been avoiding Anthro and clothes shopping in general because I’ve put us on a tight budget, but I figure adding them to my wish list can’t hurt!

I find it difficult to dress the way I want to these days as well – as a stay at home mom with two little ones and a job that does not require me to dress up (furniture refinishing), I find myself stuck in a fashion rut. Cute accessories rarely happen for me these days!

  10. DeniseMarie August 19, 2010 at 12:14 pm #

Hubby thinks I should just throw it all out and buy select pieces that work well like what you are showing. You’d think we’d treat ourselves better with our clothing. lol

  11. lisa August 19, 2010 at 5:48 am #

you have such great taste, Emily! I am also one of those women who does not get jazzed over summer clothes, ooh, give me fall/winter clothes any day! I ‘regretfully’ also seem to gain weight during the summer – rats! wonder if that has anything to do with it…nope, I don’t think it does! Be blessed today!

  12. Colleen August 19, 2010 at 5:20 am #

OMG girl what are you doing to me? I love all that you pictured. I actually have the rosette top from ON. I am going to do so much shopping!

  13. susan August 19, 2010 at 4:59 am #

you sound so much like me! i wear mostly neutrals. almost never heels (three kids :) just the most basic jewelry. i’m working on our living room right now and it’s the finishing touches that are holding me up! have a great day! susan

  14. tammy August 19, 2010 at 12:16 am #

perhaps I do dress like i decorate! I like to dress classy and fun but at a very low budget and since I have been decorating a bit more… I realize i will NOT pay a high price for hardly anything at all!! It is hard when you have very expensive taste but want to be very wise and careful with the dollar!!

  15. Pamela @ Atmosphere ID August 18, 2010 at 8:02 pm #

I love the dresses and the unique take on cowel necks. I can’t wait for Fall so it’s cool enough to layer. I feel so much more comfortable with a bunch of layers between me and everyone else. I wear a lot of solid and mostly neutrals but I do have a soft spot for pink.

  16. Michele August 18, 2010 at 6:39 pm #

Oh, I used to live in Seattle (part of my heart is still there), but now I’m back in Texas. It’s so incredibly hot here that it’s very hard to layer. I miss the cooler weather in the northwest. I’m so ready for fall! I find that I’m drawn to neutrals because it’s a safe choice. It takes so much effort to put together an outfit with color. I always feel like I’m trying too hard. You make it look effortless. Love reading your WIWW posts! One more thing, if I were doing a wish list, I’d have to add a new pair of Hudson jeans to it.

  17. Jolie August 18, 2010 at 2:39 pm #

I can completely see you in most of these (maybe that means I spent too much time in your archives when I discovered your blog the other day?) I know what you mean though – the end of season clothing rut can be a bit tiresome. What about taking one of your (great fit but worn-to-death) tanks and adding a few fabric flowers a la the Old Navy tee above in a complementary fabric…it might just you a little boost in having something not-exactly-the-same-as-last-week to wear? I stink on the final step of accessorising too (makeup not always far behind, especially for school runs!)

  18. Courtney Flores August 18, 2010 at 1:55 pm #

YES – we do dress like we decorate around here. My husband and I were both born in the wrong decade, and we are both very mid-century modern in both our dress and decor!

  19. Kristin August 18, 2010 at 12:51 pm #

That tan dress is incredible. I am SO over summer! Unfortunately, I live in Texas and it’ll be 102+ degrees for the next month. I want jeans and sweaters too!

  20. Susanne August 18, 2010 at 11:38 am #

I wish I dressed how I decorated! I can put a room together and accessorize, but when trying to dress myself, I feel it’s mostly a disaster. I tend towards solid neutrals, as well. And black. I love every piece you picked out. You have great all-around style {from what I’ve seen} and I’d be thrilled to have one iota of your style!

  21. antiquechase August 18, 2010 at 11:16 am #

I don’t dress the way I decorate.. I had to think about that for a minute… but maybe that should be my new strategy because I feel so totally uninspired by my wardrobe…

It’s just simply more fun to shop for antiques that to try on clothes!!

  22. julie August 18, 2010 at 10:17 am #

yes! i did! however, i am pretty proud that i have been venturing out and adding some color in my clothing! but i too have a very netural home taupe, gray, cream, and black! with a little gold and silver accesories thrown in! and i too lack the last 10% of accessorizing a room and want a pro to come over and help in that area! i think you are great at that! would love to see more of your home!

  23. cailan August 18, 2010 at 10:10 am #

I stick to about 4-5 colors in my closet: white/cream, brown, green, turquoise and pink. The colors I like to see on me, I like to see around me in the house. I’m a big believer in viewing ourselves as much a part of the environment we create around us as say the colors on our walls. Though you don’t want to get too carried away, it’s fun to coordinate, not clash.

  24. Tessa August 18, 2010 at 9:26 am #

Super cute! Loved this post. Probably kinda fun to put together too, no?! You know what is funny, I don’t dress how I decorate. I don’t like patterns in clothes, but I like them on pillows and curtains. I tend to be a teeny bit more up to date with my clothes, yet pretty traditional with my house. But, I do love browns, ivorys, and earth tones in both wardrobe and my home so there you go.

  25. Lindsay Lee August 18, 2010 at 9:14 am #

I LOVE that anthro shirt. So cute!! :)

  26. Katie@ Cowboy Phraseology August 18, 2010 at 7:42 am #

Yep! I actually did a post on this exact theory several months ago.

    http://cowboyphraseology.blogspot.com/2010/05/finding-your-design-style.html

PS. I love what you wear. I wish I had your thin body as well as your clothes. :)

  27. Amanda@The Hand Me Down House August 18, 2010 at 7:18 am #

OH I LOVE those sweaters! And with fall around the corner in the Midwest I will SO need some new cardigans and sweaters. I actually just got the striped Old Navy one — and it’s like my new favorite! :) Thanks for the inspiring post!!

  28. beth August 18, 2010 at 7:18 am #

    cute cute! love that sweater.

  29. Lynda August 18, 2010 at 7:03 am #

Love your fashion choices and I think you are very good at styling. Your home is beautiful. I also am a solid girl – my husband actually used to call me solid girl. I think that my house does reflect my dressing style. Not that it is all solid – it’s just simple with added touches here and there – like putting on a basic outfit and kicking it up a notch with fun shoes or jewelry.

  30. fancythis August 18, 2010 at 6:58 am #

this post made me laugh because my friends are always getting on me about the lack of color in my wardrobe. I wear; gray, black, brown, white, and ivory. Every now and then, I’ll throw in some purple, but it’s usually dark purple and my best friend says it may as well be black. I would say I’m a smidge more daring with my decorating than my wardrobe, but not much more.

  31. emily August 18, 2010 at 6:16 am #

everything is really cute, i love it all. i decorate just like i dress for sure…and your clothes are not uninteresting!

  32. Heather W August 18, 2010 at 6:16 am #

Girl..you are so chic and cute, you don’t even need to worry about having a stylist come in for either your dressing or your decorating! I love the items you chose and as I scrolled through them I thought to myself, “I could totally see her picking that outfit (not because I know you but based on your usual WIWW choices). Why can’t I seem to pick things that cute?” Just keep doing what you’re doing.

  33. Sandi August 18, 2010 at 6:15 am #

Absolutely, I dress and decorate similarly, and very much like you…neutrals, no patterns and no bold colors. I have at least a half dozen white blouses and another half dozen white shirts.

I once wore a skirt to work with little flowers on it and people were actually coming to my office from other floors in the building to see it because no one could believe I was wearing a print. :)

  34. Amanda M. August 18, 2010 at 6:02 am #

oooh, i love all the items you chose. :) funny, i do not dress like i decorate at all. i have never thought about it before and just realized i do not do that – other than making sure all are on sale!

  35. Megan August 18, 2010 at 5:11 am #

I love these! The colors look similar to what you can find in my closet and home… I’ve tried adding pops of color (to both) but never end up completely satisfied with it… I think I may be making a trip to Old Nvay and Anthro soon!

  36. Cat, from iBlog August 18, 2010 at 5:06 am #

I LOVE all these items! I always felt you and I had the same taste, but every single one of these made me smile! I could totally see all of this on you, too. :)
