flouncy flowers {two tutorials & more}

    flower-week

    Well, today is the final day of flower week and I can say that I’ve loved it! I hope you have learned a few new things, have been inspired to create and maybe even finished a few of the projects. Like I said earlier this week, I could probably keep going for days and days with so many fun ways to create blossoms. I tried to narrow it down to five of my current favorites, but I just couldn’t. So today, there are two flowers.

    Be sure to scroll all the way down for a few extra goodies at the end of the post.

    The first flower today is a simple and modern one.

    IMG_1047-1

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    IMG_1036

    :: satin fabric

    :: beads for embellishing {I used pearls from a broken pearl bracelet}

    :: round template {mine is approximately 2 1/2 inches}

    :: needle, thread & scissors

    STEP ONE: cut four circles

    IMG_1038

    IMG_1039

    STEP TWO: stack circles and stitch through center

    IMG_1041

    STEP THREE: add beads to center to embellish

    IMG_1043

    STEP FOUR: snip into circle

    IMG_1044

    IMG_1046

    And you’re done!

    IMG_1074

    Pin a little bunch to a sweater for a fun accessory.

    Cute and simple, right?

    Let’s move right into the next flower:

    IMG_1068-1

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    IMG_1054

    :: organza

    :: a small piece of satin for the center

    :: thread, needle & scissors

    STEP ONE: cut organza into eight rectangles

    IMG_1050

    My rectangles are 2 x 1, but you could cut them any size you like

    IMG_1052

    STEP TWO: layer

    IMG_1056

    IMG_1057

    STEP THREE: stitch through the center of the layered pieces

    IMG_1058

    Just use a running stitch and go from end to end, gathering as you go

    IMG_1059

    STEP FOUR: wrap thread around center

    IMG_1061

    Tie off in back and snip thread and you’ll have this:

    IMG_1063

    STEP FIVE: add center embellishment

    IMG_1064

    cut small circle from satin {approximately 3/4″Ā}

    IMG_1066

    fold into quarters and stitch through the bottom to secure

    IMG_1067

    then attach with a stitch through the center of the flouncy flower.

    IMG_1068

    So sweet. I attached two to a pair of shoes for a summery look:

    1. i love all your beautiful flowers and other crafts. thanks for sharing the tutorials.
      you will keep me busy the rest of the year.

    2. Love your flowers! Have been making Martha Stewart’s silk Lotus flowers myself. How do you finish off the backs for pinning so that they look nice and neat?

    3. You are amazing!! I LOVE looking at your site. thanks so much for the flower tutorials. I look forward to making some fun stuff! I will share your sit with all my friends!!

    4. I have a question, did you pin with a safety pin, sew on or do some other sort of attaching to the sweater? I just found that exact navy blue satin on sale at Joann’s I bought about 10″ to experiment with. My brain is stirred, I just wish I would have remembered all the ideas you have posted while I was shopping for fabric! : )
      I also have the burlap to do the cork board idea, I am thinking of putting some rolled flowers from some sort of fabric, maybe organza, I thought about also using a linen or even a patterned fabric that I found. SO many ideas and my husband is out of town this weekend making my time more open to actually put to good use! : )

    5. Thanks for the tutorials…Made the gathered flower for a headband for family pics this week. You should try a pinwheel flower…so easy to make and adorable. Thanks again and god bless.

    6. I just ordered the prints! Thank you! I was going to order a couple and then clicked back through the blog and found the assortment. Can’t wait to frame some and give some as gifts. I’ve loved your blog since the beginning (or near the beginning at least!), and I think God has really blessed you with a gift for creating, a gift for writing, and a gift for parenting.

    7. I absolutely LOVED your floral tutorials. By far, my fave. I haven’t had a chance to make any of them yet being so busy with work & kids school functions, but its been on my mind non-stop! I’m hoping to make a few this week & have my girls help me. They love making projects with me. I also purchased the prints on Friday but haven’t received a confirmation when I’ll get them. I can’t wait to put some up on my walls & use them as gifts for family & friends! Hope you had a blessed Mother’s Day :)

    8. I used the Mother’s Day card for my momma. I also embellished her gift with paper flowers and a wire “mom” tag. She loved it so much she carried the package around unopened until all her sisters saw it! Thanks for being so giving.

    9. Thank you so much….you have so much ingenuity!! I still have yet to make things, but enjoy passing on info about your blog!! My husb. graduated from Pharmacy school yesterday and I passed on info to lady sitting behind me. BLessings!

    20. Happy Mother’s Day, Emily!! You are tempting me with that print assortment! I don’t sew/craft very much unless its crafty stuff for a party…I don’t think I even own a needle and thread…But funny thing my mother in law gave me a 650 dollar sewing machine for Christmas 2 years ago. It still sits in it’s box in the garage. How very sad…Must change that. I might just get inspired enough through your blog to pull the thing out and learn! have a great weekend!

    21. Lovely! Each and every tutorial has been inspiring. Today I hunted around my house and found some old…very old fabric. Yay! (I didn’t shop for it…that is just not me.) I’m on my way now to get my craft on…thanks to you. And…something you did for me was to inspire me to have fun and not worry about making every little detail perfect! Because it just might be perfect – like all *your* projects – when it’s complete. That is an amazing gift. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
      Happy Mother’s Day!!
