coffee chat (catching up)

This edition of coffee chat is brought to you by my first eggnog latte of the season:

For some insane reason, Costco already has eggnog in stock and I just couldn’t pass it up. I’m an afternoon decaf latte drinker and makes these lattes at home (here is my recipe). So while chatting, I’ll be drinking one of these. Grab a cup of something delicious and let’s chat!

Last weekend I flew to Dallas, Texas for our annual-ish college girls weekend. My friend Reagan was the host this time around and she showed us a good time.

We visited the Texas State Fair, ate corn dogs and did lots of people watching. Texas does things big, and this fair was BIG.

Later that night, we took in a high school football game between two of the best teams in the country.

I went to a high school with a graduating class of 102, so my friday night football game experience was a teeny bit different than this with the 17,000 fans and fully-uniformed marching band and blow-up tunnels with smoke machines. We were so inspired by the impressive kick line girls during the halftime show that later that night we made up our own routine. Nothing better than a couple of nearly 40-year-olds trying to high kick. There is a video that exists on someone’s phone that will hopefully never be seen. Let’s just say what we imagined we looked like and reality were a bit different.

The next day we enjoyed some shopping and fine eating in McKinney. This store was my favorite:

It’s in the downtown square called Gray Living. A must if you’re in McKinney. Also a must: Patina Green for lunch and Emporium Pies for a treat to go.

How darling is the packaging?!

It was a wonderfully refreshing weekend and then I came home and remembered why I love this time of year so much:

Fall leaves, cozy layers, boots.

By the way, I’m asked all the time about these boots. Unfortunately, I bought them several years ago at DSW and can’t find them online. So basically I have no answer when I’m asked about the boots. Sorry about that.

Before I left for the weekend, my friend Jamie introduced me to the newest album by her husband and band at Austin Stone Worship. The album is called This Glorious Grace.

this glorious grace
If you are needing some new worship music, buy this album. You’ll love it. Especially this song. I’ve been listening to it on repeat.

Something else I really love … having family photos taken.

This is our second year doing a mini 15 minute session. It’s such a great idea for families with many children who are not particularly as in love with having family photos taken as their mother. I just got our proofs back and there are some cute ones. I’ll share those and our outfits in an upcoming post.

What else should we chat about?

Dark nail polish. Do you like or not like? I had my nails done with a girlfriend for my birthday and went with a dark purply/black (see it in that top photo up there). I have liked it, but it is now starting to chip and I’m trying to decide if I’ll go dark again or stick to my usual neutral/bone color. Thoughts?

Gym memberships.  Once soccer season is over and we won’t have multiple mid-week practices for the boys, we’re thinking about joining the YMCA. They have barre classes (for me), a rock wall (for the kids), machines (for Ryan) and family fitness (for all of us). Will we use it? Is it worth it?

Jimmy Fallon. Everything he does is just so funny. Like this. And this. We played that second game on vacation with friends this spring and again with my family this summer. It was hilarious. If you need a good group game that will make everyone laugh, try it. And use this obnoxious song in the headphones.

Alright, friends. That’s it for now. My coffee is gone and I must stop talking your ear off. It was fun!

This makes me so happy… I grew up in McKinney and it’s so cool that you got to explore my old stomping ground. Hope you had fun!!

when i was a nanny in california last year, we had a YMCA membership at it was THE BOMB. our Y was way lamer than your’s, but dropping those kids off at the childcare place and having an hour alone on the elliptical machine was amaze. do i sound like such an adult or what?!

I love these posts! How great that you were able to get away for a girls weekend. It’s nice to recharge and have fun!

I’ve been thinking about the Y for my family too!
Love dark polish, but hate that the chips are so visible. :/
I’ve never been a fan of eggnog, but I feel like I should give it another try just in case my taste buds have changed. ;)

The Y is a must. I’m such a fan of the place because it’s for everyone – all are in, all are welcome, all are encouraged. You see – and cheer on – every type of people and body there is, and it’s community-driven to the core. I go almost daily, mostly for the childcare that helps mama’s sanity (and for the exercise). It sounds like your family has a flexible enough schedule that it could definitely work for you.

When I started reading your blog years ago I lived in Dallas and everytime I went to the square in McKinney, which is one of my happy places, I always thought she would shop here! Fun to see you enjoying Texas and you hit all the important places. I must also admit when we left and moved to Oregon I wasn’t as nervous because of reading your blog and seeing how beautiful it was and how much you loved it. Thanks for sharing your adventures and inspiring our life & decorating!!

About the nail polish :) I love a natural, neutral nail, shows less wear but I have realized a dark sassy fall color makes my hands look fabulous!!! I get my usual mani, dark tones and then after a day or so I put a coat of Essie’s Gel Setter. I can make my mani last about 10 days with it, depending on what I am doing. xoxo

Yay for your lovely time away with your friends! I just looked up eggnog, cos I’m not sure it’s quite a thing over here in Britland….. but anyway, I found a great homemade recipe (find it here: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-homemade-eggnog-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-214298) You inspired me!
PLUS, I think I’ve just found a new favourite worship resource! Thank you so much for the links to the Austin Stone Worship Collective :-)

Great chat! Love getting to know you a little better and see what you’ve been up to! Loving the worship album! I wish I could transport myself to those cool places with that yummy food! Looking forward to seeing your pics and outfit shares, for pics! I need a 15 min session too for my kids sake! You got me thinking about a college friends get away! We need each other even years later don’t we!? Blessings! Daisy

So glad you got to experience Big Tex in person and the best corny dogs ever! Friday night lights are blast too! Sounds like you were either in Allen or Southlake with those big numbers. Glad you enjoyed our fair city!

I LOOOOVE dark nail polish! I don’t tend to go black, but dark plums and greys for this time of year. I struggle because I’m a huge fan of neutral. So I’ve been doing 1 mani Neutral and then the next time I pick a shade that goes with the season. Then the next time back to Neutral…that way I get a mix of color but keep my favorite stand by as well. I think it looks great on light skin (the dark shades)

I remember you saying on the Jaimie Ivey podcast that you did some home barre workouts (maybe Tracey Anderson? I can’t remember..) But if you are a person who is not averse to working out at home, I highly recommend Suzanne Bowen’s streaming barre workouts. I LOVE her and find the variety of her workouts so much better than any barre class I’ve attended. And it is very reasonable! Google Suzanne Bowen Fitness. You can try it for free for two days to check it out. (I honestly get nothing out of this, I really do just love it!)

I took my nephew to the Fair on Columbus Day. Lots of schools were out so it was crowded and miserably hot, but still fun. A big Yes! to Patina Green. I have missed Gray Living. I tend to haunt the (less expensive) stores off the square. Allen football game? If so, that is about as big as it gets. And yes on dark polish. If you find it too high maintenance on your fingers, at least keep it on your toes. Hope you come back to our parts.

  16. Bethany October 21, 2015 at 11:13 am #

I live in Texas but never been to the State Fair! Looks fun! I wish we had leaves like yours though and could be wearing boots by now, haha!
Also, LOVE dark nail polish, currently have some super dark almost black on both my fingers and toes.
And we have a YMCA membership and love it, though we just recently cancelled my husband’s. He works all day and then just wasn’t using it after or before work (he leaves for work super early). I love it for me and the kids have a great time in the child care. We don’t have barre classes or a rock wall though, yours sounds even more amazing!

  17. Katie October 21, 2015 at 11:12 am #

Emily! I live in Dallas and was actually in Seattle for the weekend at the same time you were here. It was my first ever visit to the Pacific Northwest. I’ve been reading your blog for several years and I literally thought to myself, “wouldn’t that be so fun if I ran into Emily while I’m here.” How ironic that you were in my city at the same time. I hope to meet you one day and share in person what an inspiration you are. Glad you had fun in the Big D. I loved my visit to Seattle and will definitely be back!

  18. Sue October 21, 2015 at 11:12 am #

    Loved the music

  19. Jaelyn October 21, 2015 at 11:12 am #

Jimmy Fallon is my favvv! Now I need to have a party just so we can play that game, and serve eggnog lattes. Love your coffee chats!
Oh, and deffo the dark nail varnish!

  20. Barbara October 21, 2015 at 10:55 am #

Thank you for this post, I totally enjoyed a moment of quiet while reading and smiling.

If I’m not mistaken, you don’t live far from me. So…I highly recommend the brand new Sumner YMCA. It is the nicest Y I’ve ever been to. The way I decide if a gym membership is worth it is to divide the monthly fee by the number of times I will (realistically) use it in a month to get a $/visit amount. And then compare that to, say, a drop-in class rate. For example, I can take a drop-in barre class around the corner from my house that is $20/class. If I go 2x/week for 8 times a month, that’s $160. The Y membership is a maximum of $130 in Sumner (and it’s good at all Ys in the association) so joining would be a great deal. And that’s not even factoring in all the visits the rest of your family might make.

  22. Cerissa October 21, 2015 at 9:13 am #

Looks like a great time with your friends…love these coffee chats too!? I am loving the dark polish right now but I, too, like to wear neutral after a couple rounds of dark. My favorite cheap dark color is Revlon Vixen(with several coats to get it darker) and neutral is Soft Petal (also with several coats so it is more covering).
We have never had professional family photos and I am loving the look of yours…15 min sessions sound like a great idea that I will have to try. Thanks for sharing your life on the blog!

  23. Kristin S October 21, 2015 at 8:47 am #

    Super fun post.

I just got my first gel manicure of OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques and I love it. I’m a fair skinned redhead and thought it would be too much but I’m totally hooked. I can’t afford to keep up the whole gel thing but I will buy this color.

And I’m for sure picking up egg nog at Costco tomorrow. I love it as “creamer” all winter.

We just recently discovered Austin Stone, and my husband has since been playing “You Never Change” on the electric guitar. Love that song!

  25. Jenn October 21, 2015 at 6:05 am #

Love eggnog! I had my first glass a week or two ago. Looking forward to seeing the little peek at the pictures (it’s strange how much I look forward to seeing pictures of people I don’t actually know)! As for dark nail polish … yes! But check out Jamberry! They are vinyl nail wraps that don’t chip and last up to 2 weeks! I haven’t looked back since becoming a consultant in May!
    Thanks for the chat ?

I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see Big Tex in this post! The fair closed after this weekend and they reportedly brought in something like 50 million dollars this year! Crazy!

Anyway, I hope you had a great time in Dallas! I always love your coffee chat posts :)
