time for another coffee chat

It’s been a few weeks since our last chat.

Today if we were sitting together, I would be drinking this:

I am so high maintenance when I order drinks at Starbucks. In the winter I add extra-hot. If I were to add an extra shot, I would check all the boxes on the cup. High-maintenance, I tell ya.

And here are a few things we could talk about:

* My new planter box. It makes me happy to look out my office window and see these beauties.

window box

* We just returned from a family vacation. Vacations are the best. The kids {8 cousins all together} played so well, the weather was warm and summery and the shaved ice stand was just around the corner from our beach house.  For the record, coconut shaved ice is really good.

the kiddos

* While on vacation, we did some diving, cannonballing and belly-flopping.  My sisters and I taught ourselves to back dive when we were young and it is a skill we like to pull out every once in a while to impress the onlookers. I’m not sure how impressive my back dive is since I am about 6 inches above the water, but it feels daring and exhilarating to throw yourself backwards into the pool.

* We listened to a lot of Justin Bieber on the trip. I actually really like JB. I may have even dreamt about him a few weeks ago.

* These sweatshirts are pretty fabulous. Have you tried one? Are they worth the money?

* Salad-spinner turned spin-art. The boys and I need to give this craft a try.

* I took the Strengths Finder 2.0 test this week. Ryan and my sisters urged me and it was pretty cool. You can purchase the kindle version on Amazon and if you don’t have a kindle, you can download the kindle app to your computer for free.  The whole premise of the test is to show you what your top five strengths are and focus on those {rather than focusing on your weaknesses}. My results were a little bit surprising, but after reading through the explanations of each one, they make perfect sense to me. In case you are curious, my strengths are:

Empathy . Adaptability . Intellection . Developer . Achiever

* Okay, enough randomness for this delightful Friday. I hope you are able to do something fun or relaxing or productive or meaningful this weekend.  Me? I’m going to finish unpacking from our vacation.

I just discovered your blog via Pinterest (and fell in love with an Old Navy sweater from 2010…), and for what it’s worth, I didn’t really like my Joules sweatshirt. It was too short on my 5’8″, normal-sized torso and it shrunk up like crazy when I washed it!
The first time I wore it, though, it was the cutest :)

I can’t wait till my kids are old enough to play with cousins on a family vacation! You are so blessed. Looks like you had a blast.

I took the StrengthsFinder a few years ago and am AMAZED at how often I see it playing out in life! Keep us updated on how you see it in your life – I’d love to hear!

What kind of plants did you use for your window box? It’s very pretty and I’m just about to switch my window boxes to fall foliage…

    welcome home. i missed you.

Restorative, empathy, woo, harmony, includer …can you tell I maybe did less than great in school but was always a great friend. Someone once told me upon hearing my strengths “whoa, you’re gonna make a great mom” it made me feel a lot better about my strengths and I feel like now I am a great mom! …p’s have your hubby take it too! Great for marriage…and you get double the strengths!

I have tried the Joules sweater, and I LOVE it. Totally worth the money. Great quality. I got mine stained (tear) and will have to buy a replacement. I am liking the one with the off centers buttons :)

But of course every woman and every mother already has a built in strength finder. Now, let me find my inner strength to finish a project which is due.
    Happy weekend.

Here in Murrieta (Southern california), it has been 110 degrees. Yuck. I hate the heat–but I moved here for a job, so I am thankful. I am also thankful for air conditioning.
Yesterday, I got a virus/flu thing and came home from work early to rest. I arrived home to no air conditioning (broken..uuggghh). It is 90 degrees in my house.
I am sitting here with a fan and bag of frozen peas, feeling a bit miserable–except
as I read your blog, I forget about the misery.
I just needed to say that–the picture of the dear window box plants made me smile too! Thanks for taking my mind off a not so great day.

Okay I just realized that I bought the same set of little polka dot bowls (or some very similar ones) just the other day!! LOVE polka dots. :)

My husband had me take the Strengths Finder test, too! Relator, Intellection, Input, Achiever, Learner. Still don’t know what all that means!

    Happy weekend!

    those children are all a.d.o.r.a.b.l.e.

My son is obsessed with Justin Bieber songs! He is three and knows all the words to “Baby”, even the Ludacris rap in the middle. We just downloaded the whole album! I admit, I pretty much love him too.

  18. Rachael August 26, 2011 at 12:47 pm #

    AWE-SOME backwards dive!

Your picture of the kids is so presh! We’re up to five cousins between my sisters & myself and I just found out I’m pregnant! Adding to the bunch is exciting : ) Being pregnant, I am LONGING for the cool, crisp fall weather to arrive in TN & the navy, cowled middle sweater looks SO comfortable! I believe I’ll try to make something similar : )

mmm…i love strengths finder! i’m responsibility, achiever, learner, belief and input. they sound pretty boring on paper but they’re totally me (and i’d like to think i’m not boring…). have a lovely weekend, it’s been a while since i’ve stopped by so i’ve got a lot of posts to catch up on! xo, katie

  20. abi August 26, 2011 at 11:14 am #

Oh man, I have worked at 4 different coffee shops and that drink is not that high maintenance! Actually, this is my drink: grande soy pumpkin spice latte, 2 pumps syrup, no foam, not so hot at 140 degrees, half caff. Yeah! So delicious!

  21. Carrie Edwards August 26, 2011 at 11:04 am #

I fully understand the complicated drink order. Mine is:
    single shot
    no whip
It’s embarrassing to list it all but if I don’t order it that way I’m disappointed! And going to the coffee shop is supposed to be a treat so you might as well get what you like, right? So CHEERS to the complicated order girls!!
    {PS~this order is for Peet’s Coffee. My order varies a bit at Starbucks :-)}

  22. Amy Ricklefs August 26, 2011 at 11:02 am #

I’m definately spoiled when it comes to starbucks !
My bf works there and I’m addicted to caffeine now lol.
I love the pumpkin spiced latte !
You should defiantely try one ! YUM :)

You get a 10 for the dive. Nice form!

Love your Starbucks illo. I have my specific order too: Grande Shaken Iced Tea Lemonade. Sweetened. With Green Tea. Yum!

  24. Meg August 26, 2011 at 9:59 am #

Those sweatshirts are cute, I’m thinking of getting my mom one for Christmas!

  25. Ali August 26, 2011 at 9:42 am #

So fun! Great pictures:) That pool looks a lot like my brother in law’s house in Lake Chelan. Funny if you were there…

  26. Katherine Ware August 26, 2011 at 9:34 am #

First off, have to say I LOVE the bunny ears in the pic of all the cousins!! He looks so innocent — yet that is a timeless photo trick. Timeless, I tell ya! :)

Your “high-maintenance” comment made me laugh. For the longest time, my DH wouldn’t order at coffee shops because, after hearing me order my “16oz light frozen mocha with a 1/2 shot peppermint and an extra shot espresso,” he was convinced you couldn’t just get regular coffee. I said, silly, of course you can! So, the next time we were there, he orders: “12oz coffee, please, black.” And without missing a beat the barista says, “French roast or House Blend?” As I’m laughing, my DH turns to me and says, “SEE! You CAN’T order just coffee!”

TOTALLY impressed by the back dive. Totally. I have never been flexible. Not even as a child. Always hated diving, as well. So, of course, I envy people that can do it!

Will have to check out the Strengths Finder 2.0 — need to remind myself that I DO have strengths!

Nice chatting with you, Em! You are such an inspiration! Happy weekend!

  27. kirsty August 26, 2011 at 9:24 am #

glad to know I’m not the only high maintenance Starbucks customer. Have you registered a starbucks card? It gets you all your syrups and upgrades for free. as always love Jonesdesigncompany! and also love strengthfinders, have forgotten what my strengths are, need to revisit.

  28. Liz August 26, 2011 at 9:18 am #

new to the blog, so just found out about your coffee chats this morning–i started to read, then waited on the rest until i had my very own cup of coffee ready to go! made me happy to share in it–have a wonderful weekend! :-)

  29. Angie August 26, 2011 at 8:52 am #

The salad spinner art is fun! We did at my daughter’s art birthday party a few years ago and again this summer for backyard VBS and a few times in between. A little messy, but always a hit!

And totally impressed by the back dive. :)

  30. Alecia Shannon August 26, 2011 at 8:37 am #

    Your S-bucks drinks sound like mine… :-)

  31. Elizabeth August 26, 2011 at 8:35 am #

When I started my job at a Christian college, I had to take a Strengths Finder test. My top 5 are: Empathy, Developer, Belief, Connectedness, Communication. We share two :) Maybe that’s why I can relate to you so much. And back dives are the coolest!

  32. Ashley August 26, 2011 at 8:34 am #

I think I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: I LOVE YOUR BLOG!! I read all my blogs in google reader, and usually skim through posts because there are so many. Without fail, I end up going back and re-reading yours because they’re always so good – today I felt like we really did sit down for a coffee and a chat. Thank you for brightening my day :)

  33. Ashley August 26, 2011 at 8:34 am #

I am a HUGE bieber fan – he is a good role model, so I am alright with the kids loving him. We took the kids to see Never Say Never, and after that, we were sold (all 4 of us).

Love strengths finder. I am: harmony * discipline * deliberative * responsibility * activator. I’m basically a very difficult person ;)

  34. {darlene} August 26, 2011 at 8:25 am #

I definitely share your high-maintenace quality. I try, I tell ya, to shed some of my maintenance… but no avail :)

girl. you are rockin’ it in that back dive. rockin it.

  35. susan August 26, 2011 at 7:32 am #

i’m impressed you can do a back dive! how nice your family goes all together!

love those tops super cute and cozy looking.

we are planning an indoor camping night tonight, movies, popcorn and smores cookies! we are going to surprise the kids and pitch a tent in the family room too.

    enjoy your weekend!

  36. cailan August 26, 2011 at 5:53 am #

Sounds like quite the ideal vacation and the 3rd sweatshirt is awful cute…but probably not worth it….unless I wore it everyday! Thanks for the reminder about the salad spinner art – I need to do that to.

  37. Shelley August 26, 2011 at 5:06 am #

Ok, WAY impressed with the backward dive!!! Seriously, if I were to try this my back would have spazed out mid dive and I would have needed rescuing, hahaha! Similar to when I thought, “it hasn’t been THAT long since I did a back walk-over, I’m sure I could bust one out.” Ummm… WRONG :D

I’m so interested in checking out that Strength Finder! So nice to see something like that out there that doesn’t remind you of your weaknesses. Like say… no longer being flexible at age 30 :D

  38. Alyson August 26, 2011 at 4:52 am #

I haven’t thought about the strengthsfinder in ages. I am harmony discipline arranger responsibility consistency (fairness). I worked at Circuit City and we all had to take the test. I feel like it is pretty accurate. Love reading your blog.

  39. paige August 26, 2011 at 4:19 am #
