Years ago {like probably 25}, my mom worked with a woman who made these little pastries and they became instant favorites. They are small, buttery, easy to make and have remained a favorite go-to breakfast treat. I made them for our back-to-school brunch last month and they disappeared quickly. Always a good sign.
Today, I share the beloved recipe with you. Just in time for your weekend.
GRANNY HORNS
Crescents:
1 1/2 cups cottage cheese
1 cup butter
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
Cream together cottage cheese and butter. Add flour and salt. Collect dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Divide in 3 parts. Lightly flour and roll each part into circle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 12 wedges per circle and roll into crescents. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until lightly golden.
Frosting:
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 Tbsp milk
1 Tbsp butter
1/4 tsp vanilla
Mix together and generously drizzle over warm crescents.
Is your mouth watering? So delicious. Not healthy, but they are small. Definitely a fun treat to make this weekend.
Emily – I just took these out of the oven. I left the dough in the fridge for 2 nights because I was out of confectioners sugar. They don’t look as pretty as yours but they are DELICIOUS! kind of like a cross between and cheese straw and cream cheese danish. Mine are a little crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. These will definitely become a fav. Easy and delicious!!
Have you ever made cracker candy? That’s another that is on my constant rotation.
Thanks!
Stacey
Do you use self-rising flour or all-purpose flour?
I’ve got the ingredients ready to go!
just regular all-purpose flour
Thank you for the lightening fast response. The Kitchen Aid is literally on and I was going to guess all purpose and go :)
you just caught me on the computer :)
Enjoy!
Delish!!
These are AMAZING! Thanks for sharing!
After reading this post on Friday, I fell in love and immediately changed the menu for a “Monograms and Mimosas” brunch I hosted for a friend on Saturday. They were an absolute hit and so simple!!
I’m so glad you tried them. Amazing, right?!!
Is the butter in the frosting melted or do you just cream it in, like for through the middle of a cake? From the photo it looks melty but you don’t say either way!
I just use softened butter. It mixes together with the milk & powdered sugar to make this nice glaze.
Yummy! Thanks for posting. I always love a new recipe.
no sugar?
nope! Just in the frosting/glaze.
Ask Jess to figure out a gluten free version. These look so great now I am craving some morning treats.
Those look so good. Thanks for sharing!
Can you freeze the dough for future use? :)
I have never tried, but I don’t see why not.
These sound lovely! I might try but put a little cinnamon butter on the inside of the wedges.
My fiance and I are planning a move to the Seattle area in the next year and I am wondering if I could ask you a few questions (or many questions if you would allow) about your experiences living there.
I have been following your blog and visit your website often and though we don’t actually know each other, I feel from the friendliness and warmth you show in everything, I would really value your opinions/advice.
Thanks!
Annie
Is it really cottage cheese and not cream cheese? Just curious!
It is! That is what is sort of brown on the top of the crescents. It gives them this most amazing texture.
Oh yum! Looking forward to giving these a try.
