This weekend we had friends over for football watching-turned movie watching. When we put a movie on for the kids upstairs (mr. peabody), we poured ourselves a glass of wine downstairs and decided to turn on a movie for the grown-ups, too.
None of us knew much about this movie, but the reviews were good and so we went for it. We all loved it.
Here’s the summary: “Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen — and zest for life and love.”
The story was great, the acting perfect, the food makes your mouth-water and from what I’ve read, they do a good job depicting the reality of the life in a restaurant kitchen. There is bad language – just to warn you, but you’ll fall in love with the cutie-pie kid and you’ll probably want to make a really yummy grilled cheese after watching the way Chef Carl makes one.
So we loved the movie, but what really caught my eye was the great honeycomb wine rack in the LA restaurant scenes.
It looks like a sculpture and is so graphic against the white marble and stainless steel kitchen. I love the a-symmetry of it and would totally put this in our house. I’d also take the marble and stainless steel.
After a little bit of searching, I came across this look-alike hexagonal wine rack from World Market:
It’s not quite as organic or impressive in shape as the movie’s version, but has that same graphic/geometric appeal. And for $29.99 it makes a great gift or addition to your kitchen/dining room.
There’s inspiration to be found everywhere. When it comes in the form of a really entertaining movie, it’s a double win.
Have you seen Chef? Did you love it?
Just discovered your blog – I love your style, your house is my dream! I’m a Seattle native as well. My husband and I recently watched Chef too, we enjoyed it!
what makes you think the racks in the movie are not from world market?…they look exactly the same to me…there are just more of them & theyre stacked “organically”.
my husband and i LOVED that movie! he’s a chef, so it was inspiring!
We saw Chef a few months ago with friends and all four off us said it was one of the most fun movie experiences we’ve ever had. And now I have to go get that wine rack! My husband built me some gorgeous honeycomb shelves for a gift last year and this would look great to go with them. :)
We saw it and really enjoyed it! That wine rack is so neat and it looks like you could almost stack/rotate them to look like the version in the movie! Thanks for sharing!
Agreed, it didn’t get great reviews, but we definitely enjoyed it as well. Love that the wine rack caught your eye.
I want to have the SON – lol. He would so be my marketing guru.
And yes, the food preparations looked fabulous and definitely made us hungry.
I want to purchase it when it is available.
My 12 year old nephew shared this movie with me and I really enjoyed the story, the characters and thought it was an amazing movie. I want to purchase it when it is necessary.
We caught this movie during its brief time in the theaters and loved it! It’s a sleeper!
That wine rack from World Market is a STEAL! I bought mine several months ago, and love it! Chef is on my “movies to watch” list now.
Chef is one of my favs!!!! I smiled all the way through and left the theater smiling!!!! It’s one of those rare finds! I wanted them to start it over after the credits ran. The only thing to make it better would have been food samples!!! LOL It’s on my list to buy when it comes out on DVD! Thanks for featuring this gem.
Such a delightful surprise! Downloaded it for my last flight and loved every bit of it…especially the grilled cheese;)!
I constantly find inspiration in the background of movies and TV shows. Glad I’m not the only one pulled away from the acting by the furniture and accessories!
My husband and I saw the movie and we liked it, but thought the language was pretty unnecessary. Spoiled it in large part for us. But, we recentry saw The Hundred Foot Journey and LOVED it. Very similar in theme as a food movie but funnier, cleaner, and so beautifully set and filmed. Highly recommend!
That’s next on my list!
that’s so funny…we are addicted to all shows food truck-related, so we will love watching this! Thanks for the heads up…just put it on hold at our library. Can’t wait!
My husband and I went to see this movie and loved it. We were starving for a Cuban sandwich afterwards!
Absolutely loved it, glad to find a movie that’s not depressing or violent.
Made us want to go to the kitchen and cook up something wonderful :)
Okay, I’ll be the negative Nellie in the bunch. From a review I read of the movie: “there are about 50 f-words here”. Enough said for me. I don’t talk like that and I don’t want to hear it. Thanks, but no thanks.
I’m with you, Lauralli. Read the review from Plugged in online and although the story line seems nice, the fact that they smothered it with profanity and inappropriate sexual content is a turn off for me. My husband and I decided years ago not to watch rated R movies precicely because of that. How can I meditate on things that are lovely, good, true, and noble when I hear and see only opposite?
Emily, ur2 cute!
Thanks…….you remind me of myself….ha ha, zooming in on something other then the reason why the photog took the picture!
Watched the trailer, Want to see!!! Love movies like this, but they never have very much quality at the theatres anymore….. never rented off of Amazon, I will have to figure that one out, yikes.
Love your original-live-in-the-moment-and-shar- it-randomly, kind of a blog……seeing your transformation over the years has been fun, as you seem more and more comfortable with just who you are…the good, the bad, the so so, just like your readers…..and.it shows!
Sounds like a great movie for us girls this week!
I LoVe that wine rack! Thanks for sharing. I am so going to World Market this week!
Stacia
It’s perfect for a girls night.
I haven’t seen it yet, but want to now. :) as far as the wine rack…so fun! My guess is the set designers used something like this (or this exactly) and clustered them altogether which would give you that organic look. Nothing a little welding couldn’t do! :)
I’ve got to get my husband to learn how to weld :)
I saw a preview somewhere in my past life, then I saw it was available on a trans-Atlantic flight, I thought eh, what the heck! It was so good! I’ve been telling everyone! :)
PS: I also watched Peabody on that flight…9 hours. woof.
9 hours is a long time … thank goodness for fun movies :)
My son and I watched this movie together and LOVED it!! He now thinks we need to buy a food truck and travel around…
I just watched this last week and absolutely LOVED it.
It’s a terrific movie, highly recommend it as well!
We love that film! We watched in our more artistic cinema and enjoyed every minute. We even found the soundtrack online and played it all the way home. So good.
My husband and I watched Chef last night, too, and loved it! We were pretty glad to have a bowl of hummus to snack on to get us through all those food scenes. :)
