My sister and brother-in-law and their kids spent the weekend with us. We were craving some family time so on a whim, they packed up and drove the 1.5 hours to come for an overnight.
Yesterday, we spent the majority of the day sitting out on the front porch.
It started with coffee and Sunday morning conversation and moved on to an hours-long game of Mexican Train. We didn’t mean to spend the entire afternoon sitting, chatting and playing dominos, but it was glorious.
Last week we had friend’s over and we sat out there snacking on chips and salsa watching the kids play in the sprinkler.
On Thursday night after the sun had gone down, the front porch rocking chairs were the perfect spot for Ryan and me to relax for a few minutes and talk about the day.
I have forgotten how much I enjoy this part of summer: the front porch sitting.
I really do love a good front porch. It is one of the things that is most charming about our house.
It just needs a little bit of updating.
Thankfully, we’ve got endless photo inspiration on Pinterest to help us decide what changes to make.
Want to see a few of my favorite front porches? Here they are:

So pretty, right?!
I have noticed that almost every front porch that catches my eye has a few things in common:
- The house is painted white.
- The door is a pretty wood tone.
- The posts are simply trimmed, but substantial looking.
I love white houses, wood doors, and simple trim and we’re hoping to incorporate all of these elements on a front porch update around here.
If you’re ever unsure about what style you like best or what decorating direction you should go, my favorite first step is to spend some time on Pinterest and just pin everything that catches your eye. Eventually, you’ll start seeing a common thread that will help you identify what you really like!

What color are the soft light blue shutters on the white house? I love the color!
Beautiful porches, so inviting to take a book and escape to one of them for an hour or two with a glass of wine…
Hi Emily, I have a question about the calligraphy course. Can you watch the videos more than once, after you buy the course? I’d like to do it with my granddaughters, so we would need the ability to watch many times! Thank you.
Yes! You can watch again and again!
If those pictures don’t sing “summer”, nothing will! I love them! I live in Missouri, but I’m from the South; the porch with the pale aqua shutters and luscious plants looks like home to me.
Beautiful porches, Emily! I would love credit for my photo though. :)
Oh, which one is yours?! I’m happy to credit you with it.
Love the inspo pics, but are you planning to paint your beautiful home white?
We are. The color it is now is nice, but there is some faulty siding that will need to be replaced and when we do that, we’ll paint the house.
Those houses are so welcoming and look just right to me too. Where did you find the image of the third house down, with the half porch on the side? It’s perfect.
I love them all…I also noticed they are all on a raised foundation. They are all so cozy and sweet.
Yes! I guess I do like them raised up :)
I absolutely adore this. We live in a philly duplex, and front porches here just aren’t a thing! We do plan to move back to Pittsburgh where our family is in the next few years, and I dream of having a big front porch. It might be one of our few criteria when house hunting :)
