Seven Favorite Wearable Outfits For Fall (with current sources!)

7 Favorite Outfits for Fall (with sources) / jones design company

If I could only dress for one season, I would always and forever choose fall. As much as I love the sun, what I love even more are jeans and layers and boots and sweaters.

Since we can all use a few new outfit ideas, I’ve put together seven of my favorite looks for fall. And BONUS! many items are recent purchases and not crazy-expensive.  Everything that is currently available is linked in the sources. Use this as a great shopping list for basics and layering pieces, or maybe a few outfits will spark some ideas of how you can mix items you already have in your closet.

    OUTFIT ONE

    gray-sweater

I’m pretty sure this will be my most worn outfit of the fall. The soft tee is the perfect layering piece (I like that it is longer than a normal tee) and the sweater is the coziest thing ever.  It’s a little more expensive than I would normally go for (I bought it on sale at the Nordstrom Sale) but I’m starting to limit my purchases to classic, quality items I can wear season after season. This cardigan is one of them.

This is my first pair of toms wedges and I like them. Not too high, good color, mostly comfortable. Ryan bought me this fancy new watch for our anniversary. I wear it everyday.

    OUTFIT TWO

    pink-sweater

None of these items are current, just fyi. But sometimes you can take older things from your closet and mix them up/layer them for a good wearable outfit. I’m all about a long tunic-y shirt under a sweater so a little can peek out.  And you better believe I’m excited about bootcut, flare and wideleg jeans making a comeback.

    OUTFIT THREE
    blue-sweater

I work at home. The temptation is to stay in my pj’s all day but I try to put on actual clothes every day. It makes me feel more put together and productive. However, I still want to be comfortable and not overly dressed-up, so stretch skinnies, a soft sweater and slippers is what you’ll often find me wearing. Still super comfy, but with a little more style than the leggings and tee I slept in.

    OUTFIT FOUR

    vest

This is another oh, so comfortable ensemble – leggings (thick and therefore non-see-through), a long tunic sweatshirt and the cutest buffalo check vest.

Here’s a view from behind – because I very much value some coverage back there and this sweatshirt does the trick. (Sidenote: did you read Jen Hatmaker’s chapter about leggings-as-pants in her new book? Hilarious.)

    OUTFIT FIVE

    jacket

Wide leg jeans. I’m a fan. And also a thin sweater with this mid-weight jacket. At least once per week my hair ends up in a messy side bun (see my how-to video here) and I like that it shows off the popped collar of the jacket.

    green-jacket

    OUTFIT SIX

    hooded-sweatshirt

If you buy anything you’ve seen in these outfits, choose this sweatshirt. It’s so cute, fits slim and long, is lightweight and not bulky and did I mention it’s cute? So cute. My sister had it on while we were on vacation together this summer and I immediately knew I needed one, too. They come in a few different stripe combos and a camo version, too.

    OUTFIT SIX

    black-dress

Do you have the iconic little black dress in your wardrobe? I did not until this cutie arrived. It fits great – not too snug, a good length, comfortable to move around it – and could be worn dressed down (as shown) or up with tights and heels and jewelry. I don’t wear a ton of everyday dresses, but this one might sway me.

So there they are, seven of my favorite totally wearable fall outfits. Do you have a favorite?

    1. I love your fashion posts and I rediscovered this one from your favorites of 2015 post. I ended up getting the sweatshirt and was reading the care instructions. Do you dry clean yours like they recommend?

    2. Thank you for this post! Just wondering, but what size is your Gap white tee from? I can usually guess my size accurately with Gap online, but unsure of how this tee fits.

    3. Great style you have. The striped hoodie is calling out to me, but I can’t tell from your picture if the dark stripes are black or navy. I can only find it online in navy or tan, but would prefer black. Any clues? Thanks!

    4. Love your outfits. I really like classic clothes as well. I’m on the fence about wider legs coming back. I never got rid of my wider pants, but I’ve spent the past few years building my wardrobe around skinny pants! Hopefully, skinnies won’t go out of style!

    5. Hi Emily! I’ve been eyeing your Kork-Ease booties for the last year, and finally got some! I bought the Morosita Leather, but they look SO much darker than yours! Did you get the Desert Leather, or did you get the Morosita and they have just worn over time?

      Thank you!

P.S. You truly have such great style! Thank you for making these posts!

      1. The color of mine from last year were a gray color. I’m not seeing it online now! I’m very hard on my shoes, so they have worn down and faded over time, but if you don’t love your color, exchange them!

    6. I love how practical and yet put together all your outfits are. I love your style but I was wondering if you could recommend any blogs where the blogger does similar style posts but is more, ah-hem, more “curvy”? :-) I wish I had a long and lean figure but alas I am short-waisted and have thighs for miles. :-) I don’t think that means you can’t look put together, though I just need some ideas on how to put things together that would work for my body type.

    7. I ordered your slippers from Target! They came today and they are fantastic! So soft and comfortable and made off all REAL SUEDE! I am so happy about how much I like them and how well they fit (I always wear a 9 so I ordered the 9 and they fit like a dream). Last fall I splurged on a pair of Ugg slippers and they are just blah…to heavy…cut weird….look weird…. Thank you for rescuing me from my Uggs for a fraction of the price! Love all the work you do here on the blog!!! xoxo

    8. Thank you, Emily, for teaching me how to look cute. I already bought the Toms booties in July when you recommended them from the Nordstrom sale, and I bought my Hunter boots last year because I’ve seen them in your wardrobe for years. I also bought the black Nordstrom leggings last year per your recommendation! Today I think my Emily inspired purchase will be the long cardigan. Copying your wardrobe choices saves me so much time and I don’t second guess my purchases because if you’re wearing it, I know it’s cute and classy.

      1. What a nice comment! I am happy to share and we all can use a little inspiration when it comes to choosing outfits! Aren’t those leggings great?! Super thick and stretchy. And go for the long cardigan – you won’t be disappointed :)

    9. Your fall clothes posts are my favorite! It has inspired me to start shopping for fall the past two years. I live in the San Diego area, so it’s still really warm and was this time last year too, so I feel like I get to beat the shopping rush while they still have plenty of sizes :) Last year I got the dark gray sweater/jacket from Target and it is so cozy and cute! This year I just went to Target and got the slippers so now I just need the weather to change! Thanks so much for the ideas & inspiration.

    10. I just need to comment. I’m a faithful follower for over four year or more years. Your posts always inspire me. I told my bestie I think we are like soul sisters. (She said yeah I think that we all feel that way about Emily). ? Anyway. I want to thank you for taking the time to creat these posts. I appreciate you style, comfort factor and price points and quality items. Similar looks and aesthetics (in clothing, type, decor, faith etc) to yours also make me so happy. It continues to be so fun to follow you and your stories and look at your pretty pics. AND our daughters have the same name! ❤️ Carry on girl. Lots of love from this girl in mn.

      1. Ah, that makes me feel so good! I love that you all feel like we could be friends / soul sisters in real life. I wish I could meet up with everyone! Maybe a country-wide meetup? Road trip! THanks for reading and your encouragement!

    11. I love these posts, they are the kind of clothes I love wearing too. I was wondering about those Kork Ease boots, I am seriously considering them to wear with jeans. They are a bit on the spendy side and I wanted to make sure I will get lots of use out of them. What are your thoughts?

      1. Love the kork ease boots. They are very comfortable even with the heel. I don’t have a ton of shoes and the ones I do have get lots of wear – these have held up well. I highly recommend them. (and also, I get complimented on them all the time!)

    12. love all of the outfits! I am ready to buy some hunters. I’ve researched a bit, and found they run big? would you recommend a size down? also, do you wear yours in the winter/snow?

      1. Yes, I think they do run big. I’m a 7.5, ordered an 8 and had to return them for a 7. Order down. I don’t wear them in the snow (although it doesn’t snow that much here so there haven’t been many opportunities). I wear them in the rain and especially love them for wearing on the soccer field to watch our kiddos play. I like them for the beach and the pumpkin patch and with a skirt because they are stylish :)

    13. Hi Emily. I ❤️ outfit#1. I see a green handbag on the floor next to you in the pic. Where can I get one? I absolutely adore the color green! I also like larger handbags. This would be a perfect addition to my current collection?. Thanks for all the ideas.

      1. I love this bag and have been using it everyday for over a year. That is sort of how I do handbags. I found this one at TJMaxx for $200 which is way more than I usually spend but I just loved it so much. I would say I’ve gotten my money out of it! No source, unfortunately.

    14. I love outfit #1 but I really am curious about the green hand bag on the floor next to you? The size is great for me. Big bags?❤️ I love green! Where did you get it?

    15. Love them all!! You’re such a beauty!! I noticed the stripe sweater has a Zipper on the shoulder. Is it just decorative, or does it open up the whole sweater?? Just curious if it would work to unzip for breastfeeding!

    16. Thank you so much for this Post!! I have many of these pieces and wouldn’t have thought to put them together!! I feel like I’ve already saved money by shopping my closet! I did cave and buy the hoodie! It’s now back in stock and on sale!!! And a BIG thumbs up for Boots Cuts!

    17. So many fun ideas! It is still way hot here in southern California, but it’s fun to start thinking of fall outfits for when it finally cools down.

    18. Love your fashion posts! It’s all stuff I would choose and totally practical mom outfits. I mean that in the best way! Love the striped sweatshirt and pretty sure I need it…but it’s already gone!! Hopefully they will come back soon. And that black dress is perfect! Need it too. My husband might want me to stop following you. ?

    19. As usual – love them all! I always appreciate your fashion post because they more realistic for my lifestyle. I giggle at so many of the fashion blogs out there, because.. 1. I would have to take out a loan to purchase one outfit. 2. I can’t quite see myself working all day and chasing little people in that getup.

Keep up the great work you do at Jones Design, and Happy Fall!

    20. Love them all…well except that plaid vest. (Where are my emojis when i need them!) Whatever you do, don’t google “college girls dress like hans solo” or maybe you remember it from the last few years. it always comes back around this time of year…oh wait, you should, because I know you have a great sense of humor! And no, I don’t think you look anything like Hans Solo. I now have a vest phobia! lol!

    21. Hi Emily. Thank you, thank you for doing another post like this for fall! I could REALLY use a few new things in my fall wardrobe. My favorite outfits are 2, 5, & 6. Also, it would be great if you did a post like this with fall picks for kids(boys & girls). Thank you!

    22. Love these posts! Thanks for sharing. I love seeing you model them, too! Do you mind sharing how tall you are? I’m a shorty (5’3″) and love your long cardigan in the first post, but am thinking it might swallow me up. Thank you!

    23. Oh my goodness, that sweatshirt is so cute! Just ordered one for myself and now I’m thinking I should order one for my sister for Christmas. Love all of these outfits too. Great post!

    24. Ahem. Bootcut & wider leg jeans never went away. I don’t know why people are all in a hubbub about this big “comeback”. Personally, I am happy for this resurgence of bootcut jeans if it means people WHO HAVE NO BUSINESS WEARING SKINNY JEANS will stop wearing them. (I am talking to YOU, overweight hipster dudes!)

    25. i love them all! you look absolutely gorgeous and i am convinced you could wear a brown paper bag and fluff it with your fabulousness and it would become trendy. and i totally had to order the striped hoodie ;) i admire your style and its so relevant to my own. have you ever created a “capsule wardrobe”? check out un-fancy.com its AMAZING. i am on my second season and it made my style and getting ready so much easier. thanks for sharing! xoxo

    26. You’re seasonal outfit posts are some of my favorites!! It helps us girls that love fashion and looking good, but HATE actually taking the time to put an outfit together. So excited for stylish sweatshirts, hunter boots, and the comeback of boot cut jeans!!
