the wall of l’s moved across the street

    Remember when I asked for help with this problem wall?

    You all came through. Great suggestions. My talented friend Darlene even did a little mock-up of her suggestion:

    Isn’t it lovely?

    I sat on the ideas for a bit – none of them feeling just right.

    Until one day, I started moving furniture around and – what do you know – the L wall moved across the hall to its new home.

    Hidden in there are the thermostat and light switch that before stuck out so obviously.

    A good before and after is always fun, so here you go:

    // before //

    // after //

    The piano found a new home, which meant the glass table that was previously on the book page wall is now used in the living room {photos to come}.

    // before //

    // after //

    Most of the L’s were made by me {here’s one tutorial} and a few store bought. It’s a little busy for my normal taste, but it adds so much personality with a very eclectic mix of our family monogram.

    And it was an easy fix for the problem of the wall with randomly placed outlets/thermostats/light switches. Thanks again for all of your great suggestions!

    4. I just discovered your blog and love it!!!! Curious if you remember where the bench is from? I think I found a similar one at target?

    5. I love your decor! Like many of us who check out blogs we’re looking at the main subject but then we’re scanning every detail in the back ground too. So… Where did you get that awesome dining room table? Lol

    6. I absolutely love the striped blanket you have in the picture, can I ask where you got it? I have been looking for one and I did find one at Ikea but unfortunately it was cream and black. Thanks

    7. I found your website from the picture of your gallery wall that someone had pinned onto pinterest! it is absolutely gorgeous and so is everything else on your blog! My sister and law and I do a feature every week on our blog called “Pinned it Friday” I featured your gallery wall on my post and provided a link for our readers to come check it out! thanks for the inspiration feel free to go see !

    8. I LOVE all of your designs, but I especially love the “L wall”! I am trying to emulate something similar with an “F wall”, and would love to try to create a similar watercolor F. Do you have any tips or tricks for watercolor painting? I attempted this last night, and my result was, shall we say, less than par! :) Thank you so much for your inspiration and helpful tips!!

      1. Not many tips I can offer … I used a large sheet of nice artist paper and then just painted over it. You may need to try out different amounts of water in your paint until you get it looking just right!

        1. Thanks so much for the quick response! I’ll give it another try!

          Just one more question, did you wet the entire piece of paper before you started painting with color, or just paint on dry paper? Thanks again!

    9. Love the L wall. I have a hard time finding letters. I have been looking for an S for quite a while now. Can you tell me where you got your letters? I looked at HL and only found them somewhat on the smaller side (about 8″ in height).

    10. OMG! I simply love this and we have a similar problem with a wall in our home! I have a “collection” of letter L’s too and you just gave me the perfect solution of both! Thanks!!!1

    11. That is INSANE! What a great solution! I don’t even see the switches, etc anymore. I love the neutral color pallet- you do it so well! I remember your post about when Holly came to visit and she said you need color…I love everything Holly does but I find myself wanting to say things like “shut the front door,” when I see your beautifully layered neutral home.

    12. Looks awesome! Maybe I need a “T” wall?! I’ll tell you what I noticed in the background that I am drooling over….your barn style sliding door/window! In black even, my favorite accent! Beautiful! And the paint colors are gorgeous. Our styles are not exact, but you give me such great inspiration. I am seeing a divider like that between my entry and living room soon. Thank you tons!!

    13. I have loved your “L” wall since the first post about it & this is so smart! One question though… what did you do about all the holes left in the before wall? That would keep me from being so brave to move all those. Curious to know if you filled the holes or just covered them up somehow. Thanks!

    14. I have to know about the black and glass sliding door! Trying to find it on your blog, but I cant. Can you point me in the right direction if there is a post about it. Wanting to do something similar, but not sure where to start. thanks!!

    15. Genius! Since I am relatively new to your site, I am always wondering what the L stands for, since neither your first or last names start with L? Thanks for a great blog, I love your ideas and your spirit. God bless and thank you for all the great things you share, templates and such. Your generous spirit is inspiring!

      1. My maiden name is Jones. L is the first initial of our last name – but I try to keep it private since its just about the only thing I don’t openly share :)

    16. Wonderful solution! It’s like camo for the light switch and thermostat. I don’ t think it is too much for that one wall. Now if every wall in your house was like that it might be a bit too much.
      I look forward to seeing more pics about the “Great Room Switch” at your house…liked the short post about book shelves in the new playroom, but would LOVE to see more. I love your functional, simple yet elegant style.

      1. I know … so many changes all the time. We’re mid-project on a million different things, so hopefully soon I’ll take photos of how our rooms look now.

    17. OH! I LOVE IT! I love moving stuff around. Maybe a little too much bc my husband complains about holes in the walls! haha. you can fill a hole and touch-up paint! It makes me feel a little more creative. Just about anyone can go out and buy new things but when you can re-work your own stuff there is such a sense of accomplishment! Great job Em!

    18. I had the same problem in my living room. A stinking thermostat in the middle of the wall!! About 6 months ago a friend said I should embrace the thermostat instead of trying to hide it. So, we spent the evening brainstorming & did something similar to your solution. I put an open back frame around the thermostat & decorated around it. It no longer stands out like a sore thumb. Thanks for sharing!

    19. I so love the L wall. You have no idea how much I look forward to your posts. I even tried to paint a big pumpkin like yours. Mine is not near as lovely as yours but it’s my own bit of ugly-so I will keep it. Can’t wait for my son to come home at Thanksgiving and not know what to say when he sees it. HA!! Again, thanks for sharing. You are precious.

    20. What a FABULOUS idea. I like that you didn’t have to actually cover up anything and yet they are hardly noticeable at all unless you’re looking for them.

      Love all your “L’s” also.

      Will you come do my house now? We moved to a smaller place a couple months ago and as much as I wanted to put everything where it needed to be as we unpacked, it hasn’t happened. Most all our pictures and art prints are just laying around or stuck in drawers out of sight until I can decide where to put them.

      Maybe I’ll email you a photo of one of my rooms, along with a photo of the pictures/prints I have, and you can tell me which ones look good in what room….LOL
      There’s another on-line business for you….:)

    21. I LoVe it! Great solution! There’s the awesome White pumpkin! I tried my hand at it over the weekend…I love painting pumpkins….it turned out okay…yours is magnificent! :)

    22. What a great idea! And so well executed, Emily! I’ve got a problem wall in our living room that involves off-center (and not-so-attractive) wall sconces. Since it’s a rental, I can’t move them, but have been playing with a gallery wall to draw attention away from them…seeing your “L” wall has inspired me to keep tweaking!

    23. It looks great! you can hardly even find the thermostat and light switch on that wall now. I think the “L” wall is such a darling idea…. ever since you first posted it I have thought about doing some form of a “B” wall in my home.

    24. Love it!!! we are an L family too!!!!
      I have to admit….I’m really curious what your home looks like now after you mentioned a few teasers about an upstairs playroom and some room switching? Did I miss a post….so curious!!!

    25. Is it just me or did your L’s multiply? Looks great! You will love having a bench in the hall to sit on when trying to throw on shoes before running out the door.
