Tomorrow is my big fall house tour {see the first homes in the blog tour here}, so last week was a mad scramble to get the house in order and put up some fall decorations.
As you well know, one of my favorite ways to add seasonal touches is through pillows. When you start with a neutral base, you can really go in any direction with colors throughout the year. For the fall, I like a cozy mix of textures {cable knit, velvet} and warm colors {taupy gray, chocolate brown, slate blue and gold}.
I don’t follow any ‘rules’ about pillow placement or how many is too many {obviously} or when you should use matching pairs – just go with what looks good to you. On our sofa, there are five pillows: 1 large 24″ square {with the bow}, 3 20″ square {cable knit and velvet floral} and one rectangular {ikat dots}.
There is another set of matching gold dots on the two chairs, and one smaller ruffled pillow just to keep things from being too symmetrical.
The eclectic mix of patterns, textures and sizes feel cozy and pretty – just right for our fall home.
// PILLOW SOURCES //
plaid pillow with bow: made by me. Fabric from the apparel section at joanns.
cable knit: homegoods
velvet embroidered: very old from potterybarn
ikat dots: made by me with this fabric. I added a belt for fun.
gold dots: marshalls
blue ruffled: made by me. Tutorial here.
owl: homegoods. It’s actually a christmas decoration, but I like it as a whimsical sofa adornment.
Please come back tomorrow for tons of photos and fall decorating ideas!
I really like your coffee table…. Can you give a hint where that is from? Thanks!
Of course! It is from wisteria.com. I think called a french industrial coffee table. They should still have them available.
Love your home!! I’m curious about the chalkboard in the playroom. Did you purchase it or make it yourself? Beautiful home!! Thanks for sharing!!
the chalkboard is from a salvage yard – it used to be in a school.
Your home is so beautiful and refreshing.
I love your bedroom lamps! Can you share where you found them?
I love the painting of the flowers in the ball jar… It’s beautiful! And the colors are perfect for Fall (or any time of the year for that matter!) I would love to know where you got it! Thanks!!
I love the white pumpkin you painted last year, and have wanted it since then! Any chance you want to make it a jdc print?!
I will have it in the shop on friday!
I love all your pillows! And I’m thinking I need a sweater pillow in my life. So cozy for fall.
Crossing my fingers that they have those gold dot pillows at a Marshall’s near me!! Did you buy them recently?
yes … just last week. Hope you find them!
Gorgeous! Love the pillows and your whole aesthetic and design ;)
Hugs,

Mr. Owl I love you! Please tell me you made him & a tutorial is coming soon! :)
Very pretty, cannot wait to see the rest of the pictures! I always decorate in warm tones, reds instead of blues, tans instead of grays. Seeing your house always makes me want to change though, love it!
My hubby does NOT understand my pillow addiction. I have to sneak them in here and there and then all of a sudden he notices that he’s up to his eyeballs in little pillows!! hahaha….
I LOVE the little owl!!!!!!
LOVE your couch :)
Beautiful. I have a couple blue ikat as well, and love them. So easy to mix with.
Love it, love it and love it! Thanks for the inspiration! Also, I love your striped throw! Do you remember the source for it? Can’t wait to see more tomorrow!
Looks beautiful! And I LOVE that owl! :)
Good luck with your home tour! I really like your collection of pillows, it is so interesting and textural. I have to tell you that belted Ikat pillow is just too classy, I love it! Your ruffled pillow is gorgeous and thanks so much for the tutorial. Finally, that little owl pillow is so whimsical and so cute, I could squeeze the stuffin’ right out of him!
I love pillow also!!! The owl pillow looks way tooo adorable!
The blue ikat pillow is so pretty, and it’s done so well. Where do you find your down pillows?
Is the home tour virtual?
yep! I’ll have all the photos up tomorrow.
I LOVE the sweet little owl… so cute and cozy for fall! I bet your kids love him too!You have a such gift for setting an elegant and at the same time cheery and welcoming tone in your home.
How do you keep these so cute with the kids? Its just me and hubby, but he is always throwing my pillows off or sitting and squishing them. I find its not even worth it, I always have to go behind and fluff and rearrange them. I love that owl by the way. I might need to find one.
I am a pillow-protector! No pillow fights with mom’s good pillows! And I fluff often :)
Quick question: What do you use to fill your pillows? Do you buy inserts or do you stuff them? Can you tell I don’t sew?
Great question!
I like down filled pillows so I buy inserts. The pillows I bought at homegoods were not down, so I just removed the synthetic inserts and put in down ones. IKEA sells down pillow inserts or you can find them at your fabric store or online. It just makes the pillows sit nicely and they hold their shape and they are comfy.
