Yesterday I added a new L to my ever-growing collection. You may remember that I have an entire wall dedicated to this obsession:
Well, that wall has filled up. So now the letter is popping up in other places around the house. I just can’t stop.
I don’t remember where the idea for the L wall initially came from, but this is how it started:
When we needed a solution to this wall with randomly placed outlet/light switch/thermostat:
the wall of L’s moved across the hall to disguise the unsightly mess of necessary outlets.
I’ve been adding L’s ever since.
It truly is one of my favorite things because it adds so much texture with the neutral tones, but also a bit of playfulness and eclectic personality to our otherwise calmly decorated house.
Since posting about our wall, many of you have created one of your own with your initial. (side note: people get confused by the letter L when my blog is named Jones design company. Well, Jones is my maiden name, my married name is Lex. Hence the L’s). And I often receive questions asking for sources for the L’s or other great places to find inexpensive letters to build a collection.
You can see a bunch of specific sources for my letters here and here; if you are a crafty type, you can try this fabric covered monogram, these watercolor initials or this faux zinc letter diy. There are also tons of great letters available online (don’t forget to check etsy or ebay for vintage letters!). Here are a handful of my favorites:
1. zinc letter 2. framework metal letter 3. acid etched letter 4. brass letter 5. hanging monogram 6. craft letter 7. magnificent metal letter 8. metal letter 9. acid etched letter 10. modern wood letter 11. vintage marquee typesetter 12.vintage brass stencil 13. typesetter plaque
Even if you don’t fill an entire wall with your initial, adding a few here and there is a fun way to add texture and personality to your decorating.
I love letters too! I have several V’s throughout the house. I too, have a wacky wall with a thermostat and light switch that I have left blank because nothing looked right with that stupid thermostat, so thank you, thank you, thank you for your L gallery on your wacky wall. I have ordered a few letter “V’s” from your recommendations. I can’t wait to find more and put my “V” gallery up. Thanks again!
P.S. My family and friends think I’m goofy for my love of letters. Now I’m not alone.
Can’t seem to link to the free templates and letter archive. Help! Maybe I’m too late.
Emily, I totally copied you when you moved your L’s to your problem wall. We have one of those too unfortunately. The A/C box and not centered light switches where driving me batty! Thanks so much for the wonderful idea! I have gotten so many compliments on my wall, thanks to your idea!
You can see my K wall in the background of this post: http://www.thisabundantlifeblog.com/2015/04/09/a-yard-sale-treasure-of-epic-proportions/
Love your wall! I have one as well! Next on wish list: http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/home-room-monogram/33675745.jsp#/ or the magnificent metal letter! Thank you for source list! (hubs is shaking his head! LOL!)
What a great gathering of letters (for gallery walls). Thanks for sharing – and saving us a lot of time!!!
Hi Emily, I have been visiting your blog for a long time and today I am finally making a comment. I couldn’t pass on this one because your “L” wall was the inspiration for my wall of “B” s. I even have some Bs scattered in other places like tucked in a book shelf. I enjoy your blog so much and how you share your real life with your readers. Thanks, Patty
where did you get your white lamp in the first picture? love. :) thanks!
The white lamp is from a thrift store that I painted white.
Love this! Your wall looks great! I have my first and last initials scattered throughout. I do have a wall of crosses. Thanks for sharing and providing resources!
xo

I love typography and your “L” wall is one of my favourite gallery walls! Love your new one!
Hi Emily, I can’t get the link to #4 to work. Help! I need that one!
The link should be working! It’s from Crate & Barrel.
In my house, it’s the number 4. It has a funny story behind it and you will find 4s in every room! I’m always on the look out for a great 4. I once carried a 4-foot red “4” home from a business trip to NYC – by train, plane and cab!!!
Thank you for showing me I am not crazy. I have had an obsession with the letter “J”. I started out with earrings and have progressed to alot more. I don’t have a wall but the are all over the house. I tease people are the letters for my first name or my last name? I thought I was silly liking that letter but now I am proud of it. All thanks to you. You gave a great idea to gather them all up and put in one place. Thank you again.
If you want different ones, you can always call a sign shop for their recycle letters
I tried to commit to an entire wall with my monogram but it was in a small hallway and felt too busy for the space so I condensed it down to 4 monograms and put the rest throughout my house!
This one will be a great addition to the built ins around my fireplace!
My friend and I saw your instagram yesterday, and were SO excited about the Crate & Barrel letter. There were only a couple left in our last name initials at the store near her! Our initials are so hard to find in styles we like that fit our budgets! Thank you for sharing your find.
I love your letter walls. They really give a great texture to your home.
I am OBSESSED with your “L” wall! And also so jealous. My (newly married) last name starts with a Z and it is near impossible to find even one Z, much less a variety!
z is a great initial! It would be super cute to put your collection above your bed :)
