Warming up the house with the prettiest cognac leather

There was a design show on years ago where the host decorated the room based on favorite items from the owner’s closet. I always loved this approach to decorating and the rooms always ended up feeling more personal to the owner than other design shows on at the time.

When I look at my house and then at my closet, I can totally see the correlation.

My go-to outfits lean toward neutrals, texture or subtle patterns, classic styles, jeans nearly every day. And all of my favorite shoes, bags (this one and this one) and even my phone case are a similar shade of cognac leather (like in this photo).

In our house, I also love good neutrals in classic styles with hints of denim-y blues and plenty of texture.

But you know what was missing? That buttery cognac leather.

    Until now.

The lovely people at Article partnered with me and sent the perfect pieces to bring in the warmth of cognac leather to our family room (above) and living room (below).

    IN THE FAMILY ROOM

In the family room, we chose the ever-popular Sven chair in tan leather and are so happy with it. It’s big (like curl-up big), super comfortable and has great lines. The leather is soft and the perfect warm shade of cognac to go with our light neutral couch and touches of blues.

We’re still moving things around, but I think we’ve settled on using the chair to anchor this odd bumped out part of the family room. It fills in the space, brings warmth to the room, ties in other wood tones (like in the picture frame and baskets and accessories elsewhere in the room) and gives another comfortable place to sit.

    IN THE LIVING ROOM

In the living room, we chose a large round tufted ottoman in that same gorgeous leather.

It brings in a soft, smooth texture and adds warmth to the moody colors.

Doesn’t that leather look so pretty with the linen sofa and dark walls?

We previously had a rectangular wood + metal coffee table in here and but I like having the new round shape to balance out all the hard lines.

Article sent the chair and ottoman to me in exchange for sharing with you which I’m so grateful for. But I also want you to know that I am truly impressed with the furniture and customer service and my experience working with them. It is a company I will support again in the future!

    1. Hi Emily, I love the color of the leather. Looks amazing with the European mount. May I ask how that is hanging? We have one but can’t figure out a good way to hang it. It’s very heavy. Thank you.

    2. Hi Emily, I noticed how you have hung curtains on the arched windows in your Living Room (they look great). I have a design dilemma in my family room, where I have two arched windows flanking our fireplace, these windows are at corners of the room with two regular rectangular windows right next to them (hope that makes sense). I have been wanting to hang drapes forever to warm up the room, but thought it would look weird to hang drapes on the arched windows. I saw your LR pics and it gave me hope that maybe it would look ok if I just hung the drapes on all 4 windows really high (covering the window arch). I know this is a random post but would love you to comment with your input.

    3. I *LOVE* that ottoman and I look at it (and pine) on a regular basis. It’s not a bad price for what it is, but still out of my price range (sadly). Looks great.

      1. I totally agree. I know that’s more of a mid-century look to have them in toward the center, but I would probably prefer them out at the corners. In fact, I peeked under it the other day to see if we could move them :)

    4. I love the way the cognac color fits in with your hom, Emily. Beautiful furniture.
I have to say though, I was most impressed with the ombré branch of leaves! what a perfect find in nature!
