Coffee Chat Episode 11 | There’s A Mouse In the New House

This week’s Coffee Chat episode is brought to you by stacks of moving boxes, eating off paper plates and sleeping on air mattresses. Because this is our life right about now. No complaining! We’re pretty used to living unconventionally at this point.

Today we’re chatting about the new house (I can’t help myself), a run-in with a mouse (eek!) and a few of my current faves.

Grab your cup of coffee and let’s chat!

MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO

  • We have a new house! See it HERE.
  • The Narrows Bridge connects Tacoma, Washington to our new town of Gig Harbor. In 1940, the bridge collapsed and it was all caught on video. I find it to be so fascinating! Watch the news reel HERE.
  • Looking for a fun guy shop? Try the FOUNDRY in Gig Harbor. Or MOUNTAIN DANDY in Jackson, WY.
  • The MOONSHINE CANDLE smells musky and manly (in the best way possible).
  • My go-to lip balm is LIP CONDITIONER in peppermint from Beautycounter.
  • The new kids worship album from Austin Stone is so good! It’s called ONLY JESUS and you can get it HERE.
  • If you have little ones, our family has been big fans of all of the music from SEEDS FAMILY WORSHIP.
  • My newest online class, SIMPLIFIED DECORATING, is opening on Monday!

Have a great weekend, my friends!

Can’t wait to see all your home projects! And Beautycounter peppermint lip balm is my favorite too. The lip glosses are amazing as well for a hint of color, have you tried them? Link here,

Just wanted to thank you for the recent music suggestions, they are so lovely! I’m not very in, on the music scene, and never know how to find good stuff. But this ‘kids’ album and the last one you suggested by Lauren Daigle were so nice to listen to. I was really happy to have someone point me to beautiful music, that was uplifting, and enjoyable for my 24mo and her parents! ;)
It’s really nice to have them on in the background of our lives. My brand new little 2yr old has gone on a recent kick of telling me she doesn’t like every song that she hears, but yesterday she kept asking for the Only Jesus songs “again!” every time a song was over. Please do keep sharing your music finds with us, as they come! I’m really loving your taste!

Also, congratulations on your beautiful new home, it looks like a dream, particularly the outside…what I would give for that kind of surrounding scenery! Can’t wait to see the homey place you turn the inside into, too.
    Thanks & Happy Autumn! :)

PS- Random note, I’m pretty sure that incredible bridge footage was featured in the first “MythBusters” episode I ever watched! How fun you get to travel over waters on your way home now!

Thanks so much for the music tips! I just bought 2 albums. We’ve really been in need of good quality music for the kids. I find myself holding out on teaching them some of the stuff I grew up with because it’s cheesy or theologically unsettling for me. These are great!

Your house is an exciting project! We are fixing up a second home on the Chesapeake Bay where I will have a large studio space in a room above the garage (and not in the basement like the last 20+ years!). Living near the water is so inspirational! I haven’t been to your area but would love to. I wanted to say that smell in a house is so important to me too! And it is sooo nice to hear from someone who is unapologetically Christian. I feel so much prejudice and judgement from society lately, esp. due to this election, and I know there are others out there who love God as much as I do. Thank you for that!

I was just getting caught up on your last few posts and going back through old ones. Did you ever tell the story of why you and your sisters all wore the same wedding dress? I would love to hear it…seems like it would be a good one! Love all your posts, coffee chats and style. Can’t wait to see what you do with the new house! And I agree with the rest about the cat – best way to keep the mice away.

Emily, I love it! Foundry is a great store & I love to shop the whole area. I can’t wait to see what you do with new house, having moved so many times it can be exciting & sad all at the same time.

I’m right there with you on the moving and eating on paper plates!! My husband and I have 4.5 kids (baby #5 is due Christmas Day…God has had a totally different timing plan than I have this year!) and we just moved into a fixer upper new home! It had been empty for 4 years so it needs lots of love and it is currently renovation city…we are eating off paper plates, walking around on drop cloths and used to contractors banging away. Challenging but fun! Can’t wait to see your house transformation!

Loved the coffee chat! Was also loving on your sweater… and will have to go by the Jcrew store here in London! But funny enough you were talking about kids worship. Was just downloading a few to our playlists before I saw your coffee chat. You should definitely check out these if you are looking for some new songs:
Hillsong Young & Free– it’s Hillsongs youth worship band but it’s great!! High energy and great worship. Also Planetshakers also out of Australia. Another one is New Wine kids— songs might skew a little younger but still great.

Would love to che out one of your classes one of these days! So many good ones!

Congrats on the new house and special blessings on you and your sweet family as you begin to make new memories there!

Love that sweater! Any chance you can share where you found it? Thanks and good luck with the house!

Loving today’s Coffee Chat, Emily! Thanks for taking the time from your busy schedule to “chat” with us. Re children and worship music, Bethel have a great children’s ministry that includes them in making dances/flagging for songs like “You make me brave”. I saw a video on YouTube, though we don’t have an album ourselves.

      Thank you for the suggestion!

  11. Aviva October 21, 2016 at 8:36 pm #

Great chat! Where is your sweater from? I’ve been looking for a cozy white turtleneck…

  12. Debbie Ware October 21, 2016 at 8:27 pm #

Great chat Emily. I smiled at you burning candles to make the house smell like home. One of the very first things I do when moving into a new home is bake chocolate chip cookies. I’ve passed that tradition on to my daughter as well! Have fun.

    • emily October 22, 2016 at 10:27 am #

      That is a fabulous idea!

  13. Emily October 21, 2016 at 8:20 pm #

When I looked at your classes I saw a watercolor class is coming soon! Do you have any idea when that one will be available?

    • emily October 22, 2016 at 10:29 am #

We’re not sure yet … perhaps this spring!

  14. Leslie October 21, 2016 at 8:01 pm #

The TFH kids worship cd called Strong in Me is a favorite at our house. We go to that church. If you are looking for more music you may want to give it a go.

Also I live in the country and tend get get the occasional field mouse. We use sticky traps in the corners of our garage. There’s also a poison (I’m forgetting the name) that looks like blue rice that will kill mice from the inside out – it dries them up into like a cracker type texture so no stink. I’ve had friend use other mouse poisons and they go inside the walls to die – making a horrible smell. … so if it keeps happening I recommend those two. (Sorry if that totally grosses you out. I learned that living near country fields that the occasional mouse just happens.)

Can’t wait to see your house take shape. Homes should reflect their owners, not what’s popular on Pinterest this minute. Go for it!

    • emily October 22, 2016 at 10:28 am #

That does totally gross me out but I do appreciate the suggestions. i do not need dead mouse in the walls :)

  15. Lily October 21, 2016 at 2:58 pm #

A live trap works well. Just release the mice (usually more than one) a good distance from the house or they will find their way back in again.

Great coffee chat! I really want to take the Simplified Decorating class. Will the sign up be sent to us on Monday?

    • emily October 22, 2016 at 10:29 am #

Yes! I’ll announce the official opening – will send to email subscribers and post to the blog as well.

Cat or poison. Ask me how I know. If the cat is a good hunter, it kills a few and the rest get the picture and find a new home. Poison ….you feel mean (I do) and you end up with mice dying here and there under things and being found stinking up your house much later underneath things like fridges. I vote for a cat. You are in the “country”. That comes with mousies!

I am so incredibly excited about your upcoming Simplified Decorating class! I was going to put in a request for tips/advice on this topic since you have such a gift for it. Will this class touch on holiday decorating at all?

Wow, that video of the bridge was crazy scary! The man in the car didnt seem to be in too much of a hurry to get off the bridge either-yikes!
